Onion River Camp Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are drawn to the scenic beauty of the Superior Hiking Trail and the North Shore region, Onion River Camp near Tofte, Minnesota, presents a compelling option. Situated directly on the trail, this campsite offers a relatively spacious area for tent camping and provides access to nearby natural attractions. Onion River Camp caters to hikers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a basecamp for exploring the trail and the surrounding wilderness.
The environment surrounding Onion River Camp is characterized by the typical North Shore landscape of northeastern Minnesota. Expect to be immersed in a forest setting, likely featuring a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees, creating a canopy overhead. The proximity to the Onion River suggests the presence of a water source and the potential for a riparian ecosystem with its associated flora and fauna. One review notes the campsite's beauty, indicating an appealing natural setting. A significant environmental feature is its close proximity to the Leveaux Mountain Spur loop, which is highlighted for its "many excellent scenic overlooks," suggesting that campers at Onion River Camp have easy access to panoramic views of the surrounding area. The location also provides access to Oberg Mountain, another popular destination known for its hiking trails and scenic vistas.
Based on the available customer reviews, Onion River Camp offers several basic but valuable services and features for backcountry campers. The campsite is described as "large" with "several tent pads," indicating that it can accommodate multiple tents and potentially larger groups. The presence of a picnic table and two benches provides a designated area for eating, resting, and socializing. A crucial service for any campsite is access to water, and one review mentions that water was "a little less than .2 miles away" from the main campsite, though accessing it might involve navigating a "steep hill" in one direction. This highlights the need for campers to be prepared to hike a short distance for water. The review also mentions the proximity to the Leveaux Mountain Spur loop trailhead, making it a convenient base for exploring that area. While not explicitly listed as a service, the natural shade provided by the surrounding forest can be considered a benefit. There is no mention of restroom facilities in the provided reviews, suggesting that Onion River Camp likely operates as a more primitive backcountry site where campers may need to practice Leave No Trace principles regarding sanitation.
A key feature of Onion River Camp is its spaciousness and the availability of multiple tent pads, which can be advantageous for groups or those who prefer more separation between tents. The inclusion of a picnic table and benches enhances the comfort and functionality of the campsite. The extremely close proximity to the Leveaux Mountain Spur loop is a significant feature for hikers interested in exploring the scenic overlooks of that area. Additionally, the camp's location also provides relatively easy access to Oberg Mountain, another popular hiking destination in the region. The presence of a nearby water source, albeit requiring a short walk (and potentially a climb), is essential for backcountry camping. However, a notable potential drawback mentioned in one review is the presence of a significant number of mosquitoes and caterpillars during at least one part of the season (June 23, 2023). This suggests that campers should be prepared for potential insect issues depending on the time of year.
While specific promotional offers are not available in the provided information, the inherent appeal of Onion River Camp lies in its location along the Superior Hiking Trail and its proximity to scenic attractions like Leveaux and Oberg Mountains. For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize hiking and access to beautiful overlooks, Onion River Camp offers a convenient and potentially rewarding experience. The spaciousness of the campsite and the provision of tent pads, a picnic table, and benches add to its appeal. The proximity to a water source, even with a slight inconvenience in access, is a significant advantage for backcountry camping. However, the potential for significant insect activity during certain times of the year is a factor that potential users should consider and prepare for. The beauty of the campsite itself, as noted in a review, also serves as a positive aspect for those seeking a pleasant natural setting.
For local residents seeking "camping near me" that combines hiking opportunities with a relatively comfortable backcountry campsite, Onion River Camp is worth considering. Its location directly on the Superior Hiking Trail and its close proximity to the scenic Leveaux Mountain Spur loop make it an ideal base for exploration. The spaciousness and the provided amenities like tent pads, a picnic table, and benches offer added convenience. However, potential campers should be aware of the reported issue with mosquitoes and caterpillars during at least one part of the summer and come prepared with insect repellent and appropriate gear. The need to walk a short distance (potentially uphill) for water is another factor to consider when planning. Overall, Onion River Camp offers a blend of natural beauty, trail access, and basic amenities for those looking to experience the North Shore wilderness.
Local users planning a trip to Onion River Camp should be prepared for backcountry camping. This includes bringing all necessary gear, including shelter, sleeping equipment, cooking supplies, water treatment, and insect repellent. Be aware of the potential need to walk a short distance to access water from the Onion River. The presence of multiple tent pads suggests the possibility of sharing the campsite with other hikers. As with all camping on the Superior Hiking Trail, practicing Leave No Trace principles is essential. The proximity to Leveaux and Oberg Mountains offers excellent opportunities for day hikes with scenic overlooks. Consider the time of year when planning your trip, keeping in mind the reported insect issues in late June. Checking recent trail conditions and any advisories from the Superior Hiking Trail Association may also be beneficial.
In conclusion, Onion River Camp provides local users searching for "camping near me" with a spacious and conveniently located campsite along the Superior Hiking Trail near Tofte, MN. Its environment is noted for its beauty and proximity to scenic overlooks on Leveaux Mountain. Basic services include multiple tent pads, a picnic table, and benches, with water available a short distance away. A potential drawback to be aware of is the reported presence of significant insect activity during certain times of the year. Despite this, its location and basic amenities make it a suitable option for hikers and those seeking a backcountry camping experience on the North Shore.

Onion River Camp Reviews
Large campsite, water was a little less than .2 miles away unless you wanted to climb a steep hill. Campsite was beautiful, had several tent pads, a picnic table and 2 benches. Extremely close to Leveaux Mountain Spur loop which had many excellent scenic overlooks.
May 25, 2018 · Mysteriate TokophyralI was here June 23, 2023. Maybe just wrong time of year or a bad year for mosquitoes. They swarmed me the moment I got off the nearby trailhead and kept me from staying any longer than a moment. Plus caterpillars hanging from branches by their threads by the hundreds, all at 5 feet off the ground to walk through. Both cleared up just after the bridge.Stayed at West pond camp, where the mosquitoes were reasonable/ bearable.Otherwise, awesome location for parking, water, and Oberg Mountain.
Jun 23, 2023 · Matthew SchmootzDidnt do it myself but looked like a good place to set up shop. About 15-20 minutes walking distance from the parking lot.
Jun 28, 2018 · Saurabh LimayeIt's close to the parking lot at the Oberg/Leveaux trailheads (.4 miles in) and was fairly spacious even with the few downed trees in the camping area. The Onion River is nearby. Rustic and quiet!
Sep 27, 2020 · Sarah HouleOne of the flattest and largest campsites on the whole SHT. Less than one trail mile south of the road, so it can be busy on weekends.
