Anvil Lake Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a more traditional and nature-focused "camping near me" experience in Wisconsin, Anvil Lake Campground, located on WI-70 in Long Lake, WI 54542, USA, offers a charming rustic retreat. Situated just a short drive from Eagle River, this campground provides access to the scenic beauty of the Northwoods and a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities centered around the picturesque Anvil Lake.
Based on customer reviews, Anvil Lake Campground is appreciated for its natural setting and the abundance of activities available. One reviewer highlights that there are both reservable and first-come-first-served campsites, offering flexibility for different planning styles. It's important to note that this campground is described as "rustic," meaning that it does not offer amenities such as electric hookups or flush toilets. Campers should be prepared for a more primitive camping experience, which many find appealing for its immersion in nature. The occasional sound of a generator might be heard, as some campers may bring their own power sources.
The campground is also noted to be "dog friendly," making it a great option for those who like to travel with their canine companions. However, it's important to be aware that this pet-friendly policy has an exception for the beach area, likely to maintain a clean and safe environment for all visitors enjoying the lake. This thoughtful consideration allows both pet owners and other campers to enjoy the campground and its amenities.
One of the standout features of Anvil Lake Campground is the wealth of outdoor activities available. The reviewer mentions "plenty to do whether hiking, fishing, boating or just taking in the great outdoors." This suggests that the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding natural environment. Anvil Lake itself is a significant draw, offering opportunities for swimming (as mentioned in another review), fishing, and boating. The proximity to the great outdoors also implies the potential for wildlife viewing and enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the Northwoods.
Another positive aspect highlighted is the campground's convenient location, being "mere minutes outside of Eagle River." This provides campers with easy access to the amenities, shops, and attractions of Eagle River, should they need supplies or wish to explore the town. This balance of a rustic natural setting with nearby conveniences can be a significant advantage for many local campers.
One reviewer specifically recommends Anvil Lake Campground to those who "enjoy a more rustic, small campground," emphasizing its intimate and less developed atmosphere. This suggests that it might appeal to those seeking a quieter and more natural camping experience compared to larger, more amenity-rich campgrounds.
However, it's also important to consider the topography of the campground, as mentioned in one of the reviews. The terrain varies significantly from the hilltop sites down to the lake, which can have implications during heavy rainfall. The lower campsites are noted to be more susceptible to the impact of downpours, with one reviewer experiencing ground that never dried out. This is a crucial piece of information for prospective campers, advising them to consider the weather forecast and potentially choose a site higher up if heavy rain is anticipated.
Furthermore, the reviewer advises bringing "heavy-duty tent stakes to get through the rocky ground." This practical tip is invaluable for those planning to tent camp at Anvil Lake Campground, suggesting that the soil in some areas can be challenging for standard tent stakes. Being prepared with robust equipment will contribute to a more secure and comfortable camping setup.
In summary, Anvil Lake Campground offers a rustic "camping near me" experience in a beautiful lakeside setting near Eagle River. Its key features include:
- **Rustic Environment:** No electric hookups or flush toilets, appealing to those seeking a more traditional camping experience.
- **Lakeside Location:** Access to Anvil Lake for swimming, fishing, and boating.

Anvil Lake Campground Reviews
I really enjoy this campground. There are reservable and 1st come only sites. It is rustic so no electric or flush toilets. You may hear the occasional generator. Dog friendly with exception to the beach area. There is plenty to do whether hiking, fishing, boating or just taking in the great outdoors. Mere minutes outside of Eagle River. If you enjoy a more rustic, small campground, this is a gem.
Jul 31, 2024 · Tamara BrunsThe lake and swimming area are great. The topography of the campground changes a lot from the sites on top of the hill all the way down to the lake so a heavy downpour impacts the lower sites the most. Our campsite was about half way down and the ground never dried-out. Bring some heavy-duty tent stakes to get through the rocky ground too.
Jun 27, 2024 · Adam DeBakerI made a mistake and stayed a day longer than I should have. When the Ranger came to talk to me, he was so nice and polite. It would’ve been so easy for him to be rude. This is the way rangers should treat the public. If it all possible, I will be back.
Jul 10, 2024 · David CastoFantastic clear-water sand-bottom swimming beach. Highway noise is audible from most campsites, but the highway gets very little traffic overnight. Hand pump by the waterfront has not been in-service for years; plan to walk uphill to the main wellhouse if you take a lakefront site.
Sep 12, 2023 · Greg KruegerHad a great time with family, vault toilets are as clean as I've ever seen them. Props to the Host! You can hear the road traffic though, if quiet is critical to your camping trip you may want to find a more remote campground.
