Backbone Horse Camp

Picnic Area Rd, Burdett, NY 14818, USA

4.0
This is a boondocking location. We scoped this out a day before take sure we could get out Class A in the campground. I think there are only 10 sites, some for horse trailers only EXCEPT during the off season. There was one site long enough for our rig...had to watch out for horse droppings but overall this is a nice quiet campground that has easy access to a trail. - Kathy Smith

Backbone Horse Camp Introduce

Are you looking for a serene and rustic camping experience in the Finger Lakes region? Consider Backbone Horse Camp, located at Picnic Area Rd in Burdett, NY. For those searching for 'camping near me' that offers a quieter, more natural setting, Backbone Horse Camp provides a unique boondocking experience with convenient access to trails. You can reach them at (607) 546-4470 or +1 607-546-4470 for any inquiries.

Backbone Horse Camp presents a more self-sufficient camping style, often referred to as boondocking, meaning there are typically no hookups for water, electricity, or sewer at the individual sites. This makes it ideal for those who are comfortable with a more primitive camping setup and appreciate tranquility away from more developed campgrounds.

The Natural Environment and Setting

The campground is described as a nice, quiet area with little traffic, making it a peaceful retreat. It offers easy access to at least one trail, perfect for nature walks, hiking, and potentially horseback riding, given its name. The environment is natural and wooded, providing a sense of being immersed in the outdoors. One visitor mentioned the need to be mindful of horse droppings, suggesting that horses are indeed a common presence, especially during the regular season.

Campground Features and Services

Despite being a boondocking location, Backbone Horse Camp offers some essential amenities for a comfortable stay. According to a recent visitor, each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, which are fundamental for enjoying outdoor meals and campfires. Additionally, the campground has two toilets, which were reported to be very clean during a recent visit. This is a significant convenience for a boondocking site. For waste management, garbage cans and recycling containers are also available, promoting responsible camping practices.

The campground has a limited number of sites, with one reviewer mentioning around ten. It's important to note that some sites are specifically designated for horse trailers, although this restriction might not apply during the off-season. If you are traveling with a larger rig, such as a Class A RV, it's advisable to scout the location beforehand to ensure there is a site long enough to accommodate your vehicle, as one visitor did successfully.

Suitability for Different Campers

Backbone Horse Camp seems particularly well-suited for those who appreciate a quieter, more rustic camping experience. It's ideal for tent campers and potentially smaller RVs or trailers that don't require hookups. The easy access to a trail makes it attractive for hikers and nature enthusiasts. For those with horses, it appears to be a designated and convenient option during the regular season.

If you are looking for a campground where you can enjoy peace and quiet, be close to nature, and have basic amenities like clean toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits, Backbone Horse Camp could be a great choice. Its smaller size compared to larger campgrounds often translates to a more intimate and less crowded atmosphere.

Things to Be Aware Of

As a boondocking location, campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient regarding water and power. If you are visiting during the regular season, be aware that some sites might be reserved for horse trailers. It's also worth noting the comment about horse droppings, suggesting that while the campground is nice, a natural environment with horses will have associated elements.

Proximity to Local Attractions

While the reviews don't explicitly mention nearby attractions, its location in Burdett, NY, places it within a reasonable distance of the scenic beauty of the Finger Lakes region. This likely includes access to lakes, wineries, and state parks, offering opportunities for exploration beyond the campground itself. Burdett is situated not far from Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake, areas known for their natural beauty and recreational activities.
