Deer Leap Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a tranquil "camping near me" experience in the scenic landscapes of Missouri, Deer Leap Campground in Doniphan offers a charming and intimate option. Located in Doniphan, MO 63935, USA, this small campground, as highlighted by customer reviews, boasts a peaceful atmosphere with only seven well-spaced campsites. This limited number of sites ensures a serene and less crowded camping experience, appealing to those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of larger campgrounds.
The environment surrounding Deer Leap Campground is a significant draw. Its location in Doniphan places it within close proximity to the renowned Eleven Point River, a pristine and picturesque waterway known for its beauty and recreational opportunities. The campground itself offers direct river access, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy water-based activities. One reviewer mentioned a "backwater area" with "cool deep water pools to explore," suggesting opportunities for swimming and leisurely enjoyment of the river's edge right from the campground.
Based on the available reviews, the services and features of Deer Leap Campground include:
- Limited Number of Well-Spaced Sites: With only seven campsites, the campground offers a sense of privacy and tranquility that is often lacking in larger facilities. The well-spaced nature of the sites contributes to a more peaceful and less intrusive camping experience.
- Affordable Camping Fees: The review indicates a very reasonable camping fee of $13 per site, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious local campers seeking "camping near me."
- Direct River Access: A significant advantage of Deer Leap Campground is its direct access to the Eleven Point River. This allows campers to easily enjoy swimming, fishing, and launching for float trips without the need for additional travel from their campsite.
- Backwater Exploration: The mention of a backwater area with deep pools suggests a unique feature of the campground's river access, offering opportunities for exploration and enjoying calmer waters.
- Day Use Parking: For those not camping but wanting to access the river from this location for day trips, parking is available for a nominal fee of $3. This indicates that the campground serves not only overnight campers but also day visitors looking to enjoy the river.
A key feature highlighted in the reviews is Deer Leap Campground's suitability as a put-in point for float trips on the Eleven Point River. This makes it particularly appealing to local users interested in experiencing the scenic river. The reviewer provides valuable advice for those planning to float from this location:
- Bring Your Own Equipment: Floaters are advised to bring their own tubes and any other necessary gear for a river trip.
- Cooler Considerations: It's permissible to bring a cooler with canned drinks and sandwiches. However, it is explicitly stated that glass containers are illegal on the river, emphasizing the importance of adhering to local regulations for safety and environmental protection.
- Transportation Logistics: Floating from Deer Leap Campground to the bridge requires either two vehicles (one for drop-off and one for pick-up) or arranging for someone to drop off the floaters at the beginning or pick them up at the end of their trip. This logistical consideration is crucial for planning a successful float trip.
- Safety Advice for First-Time Floaters: The reviewer strongly recommends that individuals new to river floating should go with someone experienced who can provide guidance and tips on navigating the river safely.
- Crucial Warning Against Tying Floats Together: A significant safety concern raised is the danger of tying floats together. The Eleven Point River apparently has numerous obstacles such as fallen trees and large branches that can entangle groups of tied-together floats, making it difficult to maneuver quickly and potentially leading to injury or even fatality due to the current.
- Awareness of Cooler Safety: Even if only a cooler is tied to a raft, floaters need to remain vigilant and keep the cooler under control to prevent it from getting snagged and potentially causing the raft to capsize or become unstable.
- Gravel Bar Stops: The river offers various gravel bars along the way where floaters can stop for breaks, lunch, sunscreen reapplication, or simply to relax as a group. This suggests that a float trip on this section of the Eleven Point River can be a leisurely and enjoyable experience with opportunities to pause and rest.
The reviews collectively paint a picture of Deer Leap Campground as a quiet, well-maintained, and conveniently located spot for those wanting to enjoy the Eleven Point River. Its small size contributes to a peaceful environment, and the direct river access is a major advantage for both campers and day users interested in floating, swimming, or simply enjoying the riverbanks.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Deer Leap Campground based on the provided reviews. However, the affordable campsite fee of $13 per night could be considered a significant benefit for budget-conscious travelers. Local users interested in potential discounts for longer stays or any other special offers should consider contacting the local authorities or checking for any online listings or websites associated with the campground or the Doniphan area.
For local users searching for "camping near me" that offers a serene atmosphere and direct access to a beautiful river for recreation, Deer Leap Campground in Doniphan, MO, appears to be an excellent choice. The small number of sites ensures a quiet experience, and the affordability makes it accessible to a wide range of campers. The campground's proximity to the Eleven Point River, with its opportunities for floating and exploring, further enhances its appeal. However, potential visitors should be mindful of the safety advice provided regarding float trips, particularly the strong warning against tying floats together due to river obstacles.
In conclusion, Deer Leap Campground offers a unique combination of tranquility, affordability, and direct access to the recreational opportunities of the Eleven Point River. Its small size and well-spaced sites provide a peaceful camping environment, ideal for those seeking a respite in nature. The convenience of river access for floating and the presence of interesting features like the backwater pools add to its appeal for local users looking for "camping near me" in the Doniphan area. Apr 10, 2024 · Besa SchweitzerThis is a good spot to put-in for river floating. Bring your own tube, cooler with canned drinks-not glass, that is illegal- sandwiches, etc., and you can float down to the bridge. You need two vehicles or have someone drop you off at the beginning OR pick you up at the end of the trip. If you don't know what you are doing and it's your first time floating, go with someone who has done it before help and tips. Also, DO NOT tie your floats together, there are too many obstacles in the river, like fallen trees and large fallen branches that can tangle you up and it is hard to quickly maneuver a large group around and through them. The string on your floats will get you stuck and that current will keep going until it takes you under. Tying your floats together is the quickest way to injury, death and catastrophe. Even if all you have is a cooler tied to your raft, you better be on the lookout and keep it close to you where you can have it under your control. There are different gravel bars along the way where you can stop for a break, lunch, to reapply sunscreen or otherwise chill for a little bit as a group. Have yourself some fun!
Jun 30, 2023 · C Dub, JrThe location is beautiful. The campground is in deep woods right along the Current River. The biggest drawback is that various businesses (Rocky's River Resort, KC's On The Current) use the river access in the campground as a drop off point. So beginning at 6:45 AM on weekends, you can expect to be awakened by a seemingly endless parade of vans or buses towing huge trailers full of rafts, tubes, canoes, etc to drop off for the day. In addition to the racket, they drive at full speed and stir up all kinds of dust from the unpaved road. It's condoned by the park service, so it's not like they're doing anything wrong; I just wish we had known prior to selecting this campground that this was the case. Otherwise it's what you'd expect from a rustic National Forest camping experience.
Jun 24, 2024 · Nicholas GordonI really enjoyed this quiet shady campground near the beautiful river. And the vault toilets were seriously the cleanest and best smelling I have ever experienced.
Mar 19, 2024 · humminghorseOverpriced and under favored. No cell service. Camp at your own risk. Not worth it when the water is not enjoying a crowd.
