Hedrick Pond Campground Introduce
For those in search of a tranquil and intimate camping experience amidst the natural splendor of the Southern Sierra Nevada, Hedrick Pond Campground in Springville, CA 93265, USA, presents an appealing option within the 'Camping Near Me' category. This compact yet charming campground, nestled within the Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest, offers a straightforward and relaxing outdoor getaway, particularly favored by anglers and campers who appreciate a quieter, less crowded environment. It’s a place where the focus is on reconnecting with nature, with the comforting presence of a small, stocked pond at its heart.
Hedrick Pond Campground is situated at an elevation of approximately 6,200 feet, within the expansive Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest. This forest is a remarkable area established in 1946 to preserve ancient giant sequoias after years of logging, making Hedrick Pond a part of a significant conservation effort. The campground itself is characterized by its small, intimate setting, a feature that can be both a benefit and a drawback depending on individual preferences, as noted by one reviewer: "This campground is decent although it is pretty small which might be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences." This smaller size often contributes to a more peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent alternative when larger, more popular campgrounds in the region are full.
The defining environmental feature of Hedrick Pond is, as its name suggests, the small pond around which the campsites are arrayed. This pond is regularly stocked with trout by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, making it a popular attraction for fishing enthusiasts. The surrounding landscape is graced by towering sequoia trees and other conifers, providing ample shade and a sense of profound tranquility. The overall ambiance is one of serene natural beauty, with opportunities for wildlife viewing, including black bears and mule deer, as well as various bird species like red-breasted nuthatches and Steller's Jays. The presence of ancient sequoias, some of the world's largest, within the broader Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest adds an awe-inspiring dimension to the natural setting, inviting exploration beyond the campground itself.
Hedrick Pond Campground offers a straightforward set of amenities, designed to provide a comfortable yet rustic camping experience. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, allowing for traditional camp cooking and cozy evening fires. Potable running water is available, which is a significant convenience for campers. The campground features vault toilets, which are generally well-maintained. As one reviewer mentioned, "It has vault toilet no shower here," indicating a focus on essential facilities rather than luxury. There are no showers or electrical hookups available, reinforcing the back-to-basics nature of the campground. This appeals to campers who prefer to disconnect and immerse themselves fully in the natural environment.
Crucially, Hedrick Pond Campground provides bear-proof storage. This is an important service given that the area is home to black bears, and proper food storage is paramount for both visitor safety and wildlife protection. Campers are strongly advised to utilize these storage facilities for all food, scented items, and cooking equipment. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis for its 14 campsites, making early arrival advisable, especially during peak seasons like summer weekends, to secure a spot. The cost is approximately $15 per night, with a maximum of two cars allowed per site. Day use is also permitted for a fee of $1.00 per person per day. While there isn't a dedicated on-site store, the small town of Springville provides basic supplies and services a reasonable drive away, reinforcing the need for campers to come prepared with their essentials, including firewood, as it is not sold on-site.
The primary feature distinguishing Hedrick Pond Campground is its namesake pond, which is a magnet for anglers. As described by a happy camper, "Plenty of trout to catch at the pond. They offer restrooms, clean running water, bear proof storage, picnic tables and bond fire pits." Another review confirms this, stating, "you will surely get trout as long as you have the right bait and if it stocked of course." This makes Hedrick Pond a popular destination for both experienced and novice fishermen hoping to reel in rainbow or brook trout. The pond is regularly stocked, increasing the chances of a successful catch, contributing to a "relaxing and mellow camping trip."
Beyond fishing, the surrounding Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest offers a wealth of opportunities for nature exploration. Visitors can enjoy gentle hikes around the pond or venture onto more extensive trails that lead through groves of giant sequoias. The one-mile Forestry Information Loop Trail is a family-friendly option, while more challenging trails, such as those leading to the Indian Bathtubs or into the Golden Trout Wilderness, cater to more experienced hikers. The presence of towering sequoias like the Genesis Tree and the Adam Tree within the State Forest provides an unparalleled natural spectacle. Photography, birdwatching, and simply enjoying the peaceful forest atmosphere are also popular activities. The lack of light pollution at this elevation makes it an excellent spot for stargazing on clear nights, adding another dimension to the outdoor experience. While swimming may not be permitted in the pond or nearby creeks, the focus remains on serene engagement with the natural environment.
If your search for 'Camping Near Me' prioritizes tranquility, affordability, and excellent fishing opportunities, Hedrick Pond Campground is an ideal choice. It offers a unique opportunity to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Southern Sierra Nevada. Whether you're an avid angler hoping for a fresh trout dinner, a family looking for a relaxing weekend away, or simply a nature lover seeking solitude, Hedrick Pond delivers a genuine camping experience.
Embrace the simplicity and charm of this small campground. Spend your days casting a line, exploring the magnificent giant sequoia groves nearby, or simply unwinding by your campfire under the vast, star-studded sky. Remember that this is a first-come, first-served campground, so arriving early, especially on weekdays during the summer, is recommended to secure one of its cherished spots. Pack all your essentials, including plenty of water, food, and fire supplies, as services are limited. Always utilize the provided bear-proof storage to protect both your belongings and the local wildlife. Check the Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest website or relevant Forest Service resources for current conditions, including fire restrictions, road access, and stocking schedules for the pond.
Hedrick Pond Campground promises a memorable and low-key adventure, providing a perfect base for exploring the rich natural and historical tapestry of the Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest. Come and discover this hidden gem, where peace, nature, and the joy of a good catch await.

Hedrick Pond Campground Reviews
This campground is decent although it is pretty small which might be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences. It has vault toilet no shower here. Also there is a small pond here you will surely get trout as long as you have the right bait and if it stocked of course. This place is always my 2nd choice IF other campgrounds are full. $15/night max of 2 cars I believe.
Jul 06, 2017 · Kimmy HGreat place to take your friends and family for a relaxing and mellow camping trip. Plenty of trout to catch at the pond. They offer restrooms, clean running water, bear proof storage, picnic tables and bond fire pits.
Jun 15, 2022 · Isael ManzoThis campground is adjacent to a fishing pond. The bathrooms smell pretty bad and other people can be quite rowdy, rude, and intrusive. The camp host during recent July months is kind. It can also get quite crowded on Thursdays through Sundays or if other campground are closed (i.e. Balch Park of Tulare County, July 2019).Rating: 3.5 stars
Aug 09, 2019 · K HndzDuring the late spring to early fall this pond is stocked by CA DFG every week. This is a place of fond family memories. Fishing here is ok, but the pond is pretty small with tons of snags.
Feb 11, 2016 · Tyler KarnsBeautiful view of the Redwoods and camping grounds well kept with professional State Ranger Jim was helpful and concerned for the campers and prestigious Redwoods.
