Lake Junaluska Campground Introduce
For local residents of North Carolina exploring "camping near me" options in the Waynesville area, Lake Junaluska Campground, located at 50 Camp Adventure Dr, Waynesville, NC 28785, USA, presents a lakeside setting with some notable considerations. While the campground hosts are consistently praised for their kindness and helpfulness, several significant drawbacks regarding safety, accessibility, and facilities have been highlighted by recent visitors. Potential campers should carefully weigh these factors when deciding if Lake Junaluska Campground aligns with their preferences and needs. You can contact them at (828) 452-5887 or their mobile number +1 828-452-5887 for inquiries.
Within the "camping near me" platform category, Lake Junaluska Campground offers proximity to Lake Junaluska, which is often a primary attraction for visitors seeking lakeside recreation. However, the reviews raise serious concerns about accessing the lake and the activities advertised in connection with it. Multiple reviewers emphasize that there is no safe or direct walking trail from the campground to the lake and the associated amenities. Instead, accessing these areas requires crossing a busy four-lane highway with significant traffic. This poses a considerable safety risk to pedestrians, as tragically illustrated by one reviewer whose child narrowly avoided being hit by a speeding car. The lack of a designated crosswalk or pedestrian bridge over this highway is a major safety oversight that potential visitors should be acutely aware of.
The environment of Lake Junaluska itself is undoubtedly beautiful, and the allure of lakeside camping is often strong. The reviews mention the proximity to the lake and a "nice walking path" on the other side of the highway. However, the hazardous crossing significantly diminishes the enjoyment and accessibility of these environmental benefits. The campground's location near a four-lane highway also contributes to noise pollution, with one reviewer noting "a lot of loud traffic" that negatively impacted their overall experience. Campers situated closer to the highway are likely to experience a less tranquil environment compared to those in more interior sites. While one reviewer mentioned that it is a "fairly quiet campground unless you are in a spot near the 4 lane," this highlights the variability in noise levels depending on campsite location.
In terms of services and features, Lake Junaluska Campground offers basic amenities, but significant issues have been reported regarding the condition of the facilities. The bathrooms are described as having "very old plumbing," and one reviewer recounted a distressing incident where the bathroom closest to them was shut down due to toilet water backflooding. While maintenance was dispatched the following day and the bathroom was reopened, the backflooding reportedly continued. The camp hosts are commended for their efforts to keep the facilities clean despite these issues, but the underlying infrastructure appears to be in need of significant repair or upgrading. Furthermore, one reviewer noted the unpleasant experience of tent campers smoking in the bathroom, which affected their health and enjoyment of the campground.
Accessibility to activities is another major concern raised in the reviews. Despite being advertised as having a walking trail and various activities, these are all located across the dangerous four-lane highway. The absence of a safe way to legally cross the road effectively isolates campers within the campground from the very attractions that might have drawn them there. The lack of a shuttle service further exacerbates this issue, leaving guests to navigate the hazardous crossing on foot. This severely limits the ability of campers, especially families with children or individuals with mobility issues, to fully enjoy the advertised amenities and the surrounding area.
It is also important for potential local users to be aware that Lake Junaluska Campground is identified as a "religious campground," and many of its activities are "Christian centered." This might be a positive aspect for some campers seeking a faith-based community and activities, but it is a crucial piece of information for others who may have different preferences or expectations for a campground environment and activities.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the advertising of a "walking trail" by the owners or company can be considered a form of promotion, even though the reality of accessing it safely is severely compromised, as highlighted by the reviewers. Local users should be cautious of relying solely on advertised amenities and seek current and unbiased feedback from recent visitors to get an accurate picture of the campground's conditions and accessibility.
In conclusion, while Lake Junaluska Campground benefits from a lakeside location and the kindness of its hosts, potential local users searching for "camping near me" should be fully aware of the significant drawbacks highlighted in recent reviews. The dangerous four-lane highway crossing to access the lake and activities, the loud traffic noise affecting some campsites, and the outdated and malfunctioning bathroom facilities are serious concerns. Additionally, the religious orientation of the campground and its activities should be considered. While the proximity to Lake Junaluska and the efforts of the hosts are positive aspects, the safety and accessibility issues present substantial challenges that may outweigh these benefits for many campers. It is strongly recommended that prospective visitors seek further, up-to-date information and consider these limitations carefully before making a reservation.

Lake Junaluska Campground Reviews
The campground hosts are so kind and helpful. However the company or people that own it advertise a walking trail. Well there is no walking trail. You have to cross a 4 lane highway with a ton of traffic. My oldest almost got hit by a speeding car the first day. ALL of the activities are across this highway. There are areas that have sidewalks but they are not continuous. I cannot believe they have not put in a crosswalk or some kind of bridge that goes over the road for foot traffic. There is no shuttle offered either. The bathrooms have very old plumbing. The bathroom closest to us was shut down one day because toilet water was back flooding. They did send maintenance the following day and reopened them however the water continued to back flood all over the floor. The camp hosts did their best to keep it clean. Tent campers were smoking in the bathroom which had me sick for one of the days we were there. It is a fairly quiet campground unless you are in a spot near the 4 lane. It also should be noted that it is a religious campground and many of there activities are Christian centered.
Jul 26, 2024 · Jessica TurnerWe recently stayed at a lake Junaluska Campground where the staff was incredibly kind and helpful, which we greatly appreciated. However, the park itself was quite small and there was a lot of loud traffic, which impacted our overall experience. While it is close to the lake and offers access to a nice walking path, there is unfortunately no safe way to legally cross the road to get there. This made it challenging to fully enjoy the surrounding area. Overall, while the staff was wonderful, the park's location and traffic noise were significant drawbacks for us.
Jul 09, 2024 · Olivia ScioneauxSmall, clean campground close to everything, great location. The only draw back is the road noise, so run your AC or fan and the road noise won't be as bad.Price is very reasonable for this area. But the BEST part of staying here for 3 days was Ben and Sandy. They go out of their way to help you, to make you comfortable and help with your needs. We will absolutely stay here again!!Bonus: This is a Christian CG.
Oct 10, 2023 · Patricia AndersonMy experience here was average at best. I think that the room that we rented out was very spacious and it included all the necessary components to a cabin like cutlery, microwave, oven, and fridge. However, I had a couple of issues. One - the bed covers that were provided were not clean at all. They had stains and didn't smell very good. Two - I think that the sign that says "Children playing: Please drive at 10 MPH" needs to go next to the entrance of the Campgrounds. I also think that 10 MPH is a little too fast for a driveway like that. I'd suggest 5 MPH but I don't own the place so I'll leave it up to the owner. Other than that, the location is great. It's near the lake so you can literally walk to it. I also appreciated the new keypad locks that were provided. They will send you the passcode via email in order for you to unlock the room you rented out for.
Jul 24, 2022 · Ronin GomezVery loud traffic noise. This is supposed to be camping I had a fire and some camper complaining of the smoke we'll get a motel room don't complain. School uses drive to drop off kids some one left his loud diesel idling w loud exhaust and speeding through camp. No relaxing or enjoyment here. I won't be back. Lady in office was great! To get to lake have to cross 5 lane road w no cross walk.
