Mt. Hersey Campground Introduce
Are you a local user searching for "camping near me" in a location that offers natural beauty and a unique outdoor experience? Mt. Hersey Campground, situated in Western Grove, AR 72685, USA, might be the place you're looking for. Based on feedback from fellow campers, this location presents a blend of stunning scenery and rustic amenities, making it a noteworthy option for those seeking a more natural and less structured camping adventure along the Buffalo River.
One enthusiastic reviewer describes Mt. Hersey Campground as "amazing" and a "must-see place." The natural environment appears to be a significant draw, with mentions of "beautiful bluffs" and the "perfect temp" water of the Buffalo River. The riverbanks are noted to be a mix of sandy and rocky terrain, with an interesting feature for those with a keen eye: the potential to find shell fossils. This suggests a location rich in natural history and geological interest, adding an element of discovery to your visit.
A particularly highlighted feature of Mt. Hersey Campground is a naturally occurring "ice-cold spring running into the Buffalo River from the side of the campgrounds." This "crystal clear and cold as ice" spring offers a unique and refreshing element to the camping experience, potentially providing a source of cool water and a picturesque natural feature to enjoy. The sound of the spring meeting the river could also contribute to the peaceful atmosphere reported by visitors.
One of the most notable aspects mentioned in the reviews is that Mt. Hersey Campground offers "free camping." This is a significant feature for budget-conscious travelers and those who appreciate a more primitive camping experience without fees. However, it's important to note the level of facilities available, which, according to one reviewer, includes "one bathroom," specified as a "pit toilet that was well maintained and stocked." This indicates that while the camping is free, the amenities are basic.
The overall atmosphere seems welcoming, with one reviewer stating, "Everyone was very nice." This sense of community and hospitality can greatly enhance a camping trip, making visitors feel more comfortable and welcome in the natural setting.
For those who enjoy water activities, Mt. Hersey Campground appears to be a suitable location. The Buffalo River is accessible, and the review mentions seeing "lots of people doing" kayaking. This suggests that the river is conducive to paddling, offering another way to experience the beauty of the area from a different perspective. The campground's proximity to the river makes it convenient for launching and retrieving kayaks or canoes.
The location is also described as a "Beautiful place to take pics and swim or go camping," reinforcing its appeal for those who appreciate scenic beauty and outdoor recreation. The combination of bluffs, the river, and the spring likely provides ample opportunities for photography and enjoying the natural surroundings.
However, it's important to consider a contrasting perspective from another reviewer who entered the campground from the river. This individual found the campground "not impressive," noting "one pit toilet that was well maintained and stocked" but an apparent lack of "actual marked campsites." They also mentioned that the area they saw was "pretty muddy" during their visit. This suggests that the experience might vary depending on the specific location within the broader campground area and possibly the time of year and weather conditions. This reviewer also noted "some good riverside camping across the river," indicating that the area might offer different types of camping experiences.
Considering both reviews, Mt. Hersey Campground seems to be a place where the natural beauty, particularly the bluffs, the Buffalo River, and the cold spring, are significant attractions. The free camping aspect is a major draw for many. However, potential visitors should be aware that facilities are limited, with at least one pit toilet available, and the presence of marked campsites might be minimal or non-existent in some areas. The ground conditions, such as muddiness, might also vary.
For local users looking for a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes natural beauty and a more rustic, potentially free, camping option along the Buffalo River, Mt. Hersey Campground could be a compelling choice. If you value stunning scenery, access to the river for swimming and kayaking, and the unique feature of a cold spring, this campground warrants consideration. However, be prepared for basic amenities and potentially unmarked campsites. It would be advisable to perhaps seek more recent local information or reviews to get a current understanding of the campground's conditions and layout before planning your trip.
Regarding promotional information, none was provided in the reviews. As it is free camping, there are likely no fees or special offers. However, local users might find value in the inherent affordability and the natural attractions offered by Mt. Hersey Campground.

Jul 05, 2022 · Samantha HaldersonWe entered the campground from the river, so perhaps we just did not go far enough inland, but the campground was not impressive. There was one pit toilet that was well maintained and stocked. We could not find actual marked campsites and what was there was pretty muddy when we visited. Again, perhaps we just were not in the right spot. Looked to be some good riverside camping across the river.
