Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort Introduce
For local users in Connecticut and those passing through, searching for "camping near me," Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort, located at 150 Village Hill Rd, Willington, CT 06279, presents itself as a destination with lake access and various camping options. The name suggests a natural environment centered around a lake, potentially offering scenic views and water-related activities. However, recent customer reviews provide a mixed perspective on the overall experience, which local users should consider when planning their visit.
One positive aspect highlighted in the reviews is the welcoming service provided by the owner, Doug Bella. A traveler on their way to warmer climates recounted arriving after hours and being personally met at the gate by Doug, who then guided them to their site. This level of personal attention and willingness to assist, even offering to bring back food to save the campers from unhooking their vehicle, suggests a commitment to hospitality and a friendly initial impression. The reviewer also noted that despite snow on the ground, the campground appeared to be "lovely" and recommended it based on their brief overnight stay.
In contrast, another reviewer who stopped at Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort on their way to Maine reported significant issues with the cleanliness of the facilities. They described the "bathhouses" as "filthy" and the "men’s bathrooms" as being "full of sewer," a severe sanitation concern. The situation was reportedly so bad that the reviewer's husband was advised to use the women’s facilities. This raises serious questions about the maintenance and hygiene of the campground's essential amenities, which are crucial for a comfortable and healthy camping experience.
Furthermore, the same reviewer mentioned a disturbance caused by a "group of tenting people across the pond that blasted their music until the weee hours," and alleged that "nothing was done" to address the noise issue. This indicates a potential lack of enforcement of quiet hours or campground rules, which can significantly impact the peace and enjoyment of other campers seeking a restful night's sleep. The reviewer concluded that "there’s no effort put into this campground," a strong negative assessment based on their experience.
Adding to the concerns, the reviewer also noted a practical challenge with the "dump station," describing it as a "very tight turn and hard to navigate," even for their relatively small 21’ travel trailer. This could pose a significant difficulty for larger RVs and suggests potential issues with the layout and accessibility of essential service areas within the campground.
Considering these contrasting reviews, local users searching for "camping near me" and considering Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort should weigh the positive report of welcoming owner service against the serious allegations of unclean facilities, noise disturbances, and challenging infrastructure. The discrepancy between these experiences suggests a potential inconsistency in the quality of service and maintenance at the campground.
The name "Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort" implies a setting centered around a lake, which could offer opportunities for activities such as fishing, boating (if allowed), or simply enjoying the waterfront scenery. However, the reviews do not provide specific details about the lake itself or any recreational amenities associated with it. Local users interested in lake-related activities should inquire directly with the campground about what is available.
Given the limited and conflicting information from the provided reviews, it is difficult to ascertain the overall environment and the full range of services and features offered at Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort. Potential amenities typically found at campgrounds and resorts might include RV hookups (electrical, water, sewer), tent sites, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, recreational areas (such as playgrounds or sports fields), and possibly organized activities. However, the negative review raises concerns about the upkeep and quality of some of these essential facilities.
There is no promotional information included in the provided data, so local users will need to rely on contacting the campground directly or searching for additional information online to learn about any special offers, seasonal rates, or specific packages they might have. Willington, Connecticut, where the campground is located, is a town in Tolland County, known for its rural character and proximity to natural areas. The environment surrounding the campground might include woodlands and the lake itself, potentially offering a peaceful setting. However, the reported noise issues indicate that the tranquility might not always be guaranteed.
In conclusion, Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort in Willington, CT, presents a mixed picture for local users seeking "camping near me." While the welcoming service from the owner is a notable positive, serious concerns have been raised regarding the cleanliness of the bathhouses, noise levels, and the accessibility of the dump station. Prospective campers should carefully consider these points and are strongly advised to contact the campground directly to inquire about the current status of their facilities and policies, especially regarding cleanliness and noise control. Further research through additional online reviews or local camping forums might also provide a more comprehensive understanding of what to expect at Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort before making a reservation.

Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort Reviews
We were only an overnight on our way to warmer climes , but Doug Bella, owner, met us after hours at the gate and drove us to our site. He was very welcoming and even offered to bring back food as he and his wife were headed out for dinner, so we wouldn’t have to unhook our Toad! Snow was on the ground but it looked like a lovely campground. Recommend!

May 02, 2025 · Jessica SchneiderStop your search! This is the place!! Full amenities, amazingly helpful and kind staff, lovely environment, the yearlies are so welcoming to the weekenders, the lake is simply stunning and nearly every site overlooks it. Book whenever and ask for the Bluff spot! You'll thank me later!!
Nov 05, 2024 · Caitlin GallagherA beautiful setting with the trees, lake, and the variety of activities but the bathrooms are filthy. Toilets clogged with poop, shower curtains moldy, floors dirty, no paper towels, broken soap dispenser. And a pile of trash covering the dumpster. It seems the RV sites have 2 electrical plugs (with no circuit breakers). One on and the other not. We were not instructed on which one to use and had to test them and turn our rig around. What a nuisance and why the waste of time? There is no excuse for this at $70/ night.
Sep 03, 2024 · Cecile SchutterI love so much about this campground. First of all, it's so dog friendly; hard to find sometimes. It has a really wide variety in types of campsites ranging from being right on lake/camp store/ evening activities to being totally secluded in the woods. The owners are really amazingly nice and run a relaxed but very functional operation. They've got a decent playground and great lake beach for kids. Really hope to make it back this summer 🤞🏼
