We stayed on a site by the river and it was absolutely amazing for our group of 13! We brought kayaks and bikes - and EVERYONE loved the weekend. Donelly was amazing - and the site was stunning! We highly recommend driving up to Frostburg and biking the 18 miles back to the campsite through Cumberland — it’s 1400 ft decline, 49 ft incline — you barely have to pedal and the scenery is worth it.We only showered once at the other campsite - and it was hot and clean. The ports potty on our site was pristine.Overall - everything was perfect and we’ll definitely be back! - Krysti W.

For local adventurers seeking a "camping near me" experience in a scenic riverside setting with access to renowned trails, Hillcrest River Campground and Canal Tunnel River Campground, both located in Cumberland, MD 21502, USA (specifically at 10410B Hillcrest Drive for Campground 1 and 1 Elizabeth St for Campground 2), offer distinct opportunities. Customer reviews highlight the stunning riverside locations, suitability for group outings and activities like kayaking and biking, and convenient access to the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and the C&O Canal towpath. This detailed introduction will guide local users through the environment, services, features, and potential considerations based on available customer feedback.

Embrace the Riverside Beauty and Trail Access of Cumberland, Maryland

Cumberland, located in Western Maryland, is a historically significant town situated at the junction of the Potomac River and Wills Creek, and importantly, at the intersection of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O) towpath. This unique geographical location makes it a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in biking, hiking, and water activities. Hillcrest River Campground and Canal Tunnel River Campground both capitalize on this setting, offering campsites with direct access to these natural and historical corridors.

The reviews consistently praise the riverside locations. One camper described their site as "absolutely amazing" for a group of 13, emphasizing the stunning views and the ease of bringing kayaks. This suggests that at least some campsites offer direct river access, perfect for launching watercraft and enjoying the scenic beauty of the Potomac River. The proximity to the GAP and C&O towpath is another major environmental advantage. These well-maintained trails provide miles of relatively flat terrain ideal for biking and walking, allowing campers to explore the rich history and natural landscapes of the region. The recommendation to bike from Frostburg back to the campsite in Cumberland, taking advantage of a significant downhill grade and picturesque scenery, further underscores the appeal of this location for cyclists.

The environment around the campgrounds is likely characterized by a mix of wooded areas providing shade and privacy, and open areas offering river views. The sounds of the flowing river and the surrounding natural landscape would contribute to a peaceful and relaxing camping experience.

Services and Amenities at Hillcrest River Campground and Canal Tunnel River Campground

Based on the customer reviews, the amenities at these campgrounds appear to be somewhat basic but functional. It's important to note that the two campgrounds, while seemingly under the same management (given the shared phone number and the review referencing showering at the "other campsite"), might offer slightly different amenities.

Hillcrest River Campground (based on reviews):

  • Riverside Campsites: Offering direct or very close access to the Potomac River.
  • Potentially Spacious Group Sites: Accommodating larger groups, as mentioned by one reviewer who stayed with a party of 13.
  • Porta-Potties: At least some sites are equipped with porta-potties, with one reviewer noting that theirs was "pristine."
  • Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Likely present at each campsite for campfires and outdoor dining.
  • Water Access: While one review of the "other campsite" mentions only one water spigot, it's reasonable to assume Hillcrest also provides access to potable water. The quantity and location of spigots at Hillcrest are not specified.

Canal Tunnel River Campground (based on reviews):

  • Proximity to the GAP-C&O Junction: Making it a convenient stop for those traveling the trails.
  • Showers: One reviewer used the showers at the "other campsite" and found them to be "hot and clean," suggesting that at least one of the campgrounds offers shower facilities. It's not explicitly stated which one.
  • Limited Water Access: One review mentions only "one water spigot," though it's unclear if this refers to Canal Tunnel River Campground specifically or both locations.
  • Porta-Potties: Similar to Hillcrest, Canal Tunnel River Campground also utilizes porta-potties, with one being noted as clean.

Overall Considerations:

The reviews suggest that while the location and natural setting are highly praised, the amenities might be somewhat limited, particularly regarding water access and the number of restroom facilities. The fact that one reviewer found $25 a night "a bit steep for what you get" might reflect this balance between the prime location and the basic amenities. However, the positive experiences of others, particularly those focused on outdoor activities and group enjoyment, indicate that the unique setting outweighs these limitations for many.

Features and Activities Near the Campgrounds

The primary features and activities associated with Hillcrest River Campground and Canal Tunnel River Campground are their direct access to the natural and recreational opportunities of the Cumberland area:

  • Kayaking and River Activities: Direct river access from at least Hillcrest Campground allows for kayaking, canoeing, and potentially fishing.
  • Biking on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP): Both campgrounds offer easy access to the GAP, a scenic rail trail perfect for long-distance biking or shorter rides. The recommendation to bike from Frostburg to Cumberland highlights a particularly enjoyable downhill stretch.
  • Hiking on the C&O Canal Towpath: The campgrounds are also near the C&O Canal towpath, providing another excellent option for biking and walking, with historical significance and scenic views. One review specifically mentions being "about 2 miles down the towpath from the GAP-C&O junction."
  • Exploring Cumberland: The town of Cumberland offers historical sites, restaurants, and other amenities that campers might want to visit.
  • Scenic Views: The riverside locations and the surrounding Appalachian landscape provide beautiful scenery.

The emphasis in the reviews is overwhelmingly on utilizing the natural and trail-based recreational opportunities available directly from the campgrounds.

Potential Promotional Information and Booking Details

Given the positive reviews and the unique location, the campgrounds might not need extensive promotions. However, potential promotional aspects could include:

  • Group Rates: Offering special pricing for larger groups, as the campgrounds appear to be able to accommodate them.
  • Multi-Night Discounts: Encouraging longer stays, especially for those biking or kayaking the trails.
  • Highlighting Accessibility to Trails: Emphasizing the direct access to the GAP and C&O Canal in their marketing.
  • Showcasing Riverside Campsites: Promoting the premium sites with river views and access.
