Antelope Market Introduce
Looking for a unique and welcoming camping experience in the heart of Oregon? For local residents in and around Antelope, Antelope Market offers a charming and evolving destination that goes beyond traditional camping. Situated in the quiet town of Antelope, along the Shaniko-Fossil Highway, this location provides a comfortable and memorable stay, whether you're seeking a cozy cabin or a traditional tent camping spot. As a distinctive option within the "camping near me" category, Antelope Market caters to those who appreciate a blend of rustic charm and thoughtful amenities in a peaceful setting.
While the name might suggest a simple market, Antelope Market is developing into a multifaceted stopover for travelers and locals alike. Currently, it offers unique A-frame mini-cabins for those seeking a warmer and more sheltered experience than traditional tent camping. According to a recent visitor who stayed in January when temperatures dipped to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, these cabins are remarkably warm and cozy, providing a welcome retreat from the cold. Each cabin is thoughtfully equipped with lamps for lighting, a coffee maker for your morning brew, water, and a convenient mini-fridge for storing essentials. This attention to comfort makes Antelope Market a standout option for a comfortable night's stay, even in colder weather.
Although permanent bathroom facilities are currently under construction, Antelope Market provides a porta-potty that has been exceptionally well-maintained and described as the "cleanest porta-potty I’ve ever seen!" This commitment to cleanliness, even with temporary facilities, speaks volumes about the care and attention given to guest comfort. The ongoing development of permanent bathrooms promises to further enhance the guest experience in the future.
The environment surrounding Antelope Market is characterized by the quiet charm of the small town of Antelope. Visitors consistently mention the peaceful atmosphere, especially at night when there is minimal traffic. This tranquility makes it an ideal location for those seeking a restful escape. One of the notable highlights of the area is the stunning night sky. With little light pollution, the stars and moon are reported to be exceptionally beautiful, offering a fantastic opportunity for stargazing right from the campground.
For those who prefer traditional camping, Antelope Market also offers well-kept grounds for tent camping. A visitor who tent camped at this location in the past and returned in June 2024 noted the "incredible improvement" in the grounds, indicating an ongoing effort to enhance the camping experience for all types of travelers. The availability of lawn furniture and even a hammock adds a touch of comfort and relaxation for tent campers, providing a pleasant space to unwind after a day of exploring or traveling.
While Antelope Market is still in its developmental stages, with plans for a full market to open in the future, it currently offers some essential amenities. An "honor fridge" is available and well-stocked, providing access to some basic refreshments. However, visitors are advised to stop in a larger town before arriving to shop for meals they plan to prepare or any specific beverages like beer or wine, as these may not be readily available on-site until the market fully opens. This does mean a little extra planning for provisions, but the peaceful and comfortable stay may well be worth the extra stop.
Adding to the appeal of Antelope Market is the presence of a food truck that operates on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This food truck has garnered high praise, with one visitor proclaiming that it serves "the best burgers!" This provides a convenient and delicious option for meals during the weekend, adding a local culinary experience to your stay without having to travel far. This weekend food service is a significant perk for those staying over a weekend or passing through.
The town of Antelope itself is described as having an "old-time charm of the west that is like nothing else." This unique character adds to the overall appeal of staying at Antelope Market, offering a glimpse into a quieter, perhaps more historic way of life. Exploring the town can be a part of the overall experience, providing a change of pace from more bustling destinations.
Antelope Market is also welcoming to various types of travelers, including those on motorcycles and bicycles. The positive experiences shared by a couple on motorcycles and a bicycling couple highlight its appeal as a stopover for those on two-wheeled adventures. The quiet nights and well-maintained grounds are particularly appreciated by those seeking a peaceful rest during their journey.
While there might be an option to camp for free in a nearby town like Shaniko, in an open field next to public bathrooms, Antelope Market offers distinct advantages. These include shade, which can be crucial during hot Oregon summers, and a more secure and managed environment, especially during potentially windy nights. The investment in developing the campground with cabins and improved grounds demonstrates a commitment to providing a higher quality experience for visitors.
Payment at Antelope Market is currently facilitated through convenient methods like Venmo, reflecting a modern approach to transactions while maintaining a friendly and informal atmosphere. The owners are clearly invested in the future of Antelope Market, with ongoing improvements and expansions planned, such as the permanent bathrooms and the eventual opening of the market itself. This makes it an exciting "camping near me" option to watch and revisit as it continues to develop and enhance its offerings for local and traveling guests alike.
For local residents seeking a unique and comfortable camping or cabin stay, Antelope Market in Antelope, Oregon, offers a promising and welcoming option. With its cozy A-frame cabins, well-maintained tent grounds, exceptionally clean temporary facilities, and the added bonus of a fantastic weekend food truck, it provides a blend of rustic charm and thoughtful amenities in a peaceful setting. The quiet town and beautiful night skies further enhance the appeal. As Antelope Market continues to grow and develop, it is poised to become an even more desirable destination for those looking for a memorable local getaway.

Antelope Market Reviews
I stayed for a night in one of the A frames cabin in January. Despite being 25 degrees at night the cabin was so warm and cozy. There were lamps, coffee, water, and a mini fridge. The bathrooms are being built, but in the meantime there is a porta-potty which is the cleanest porta-potty I’ve ever seen! It was all very comfortable and welcoming. The town is quiet and the stars and moon were beautiful. I would definitely stay here again. The town of Antelope has an old-time charm of the west that is like nothing else. Also, the food truck open Friday-Sunday has the best burgers!
Jan 18, 2025 · Cayla CatinoOkay, really, it's not quite at five stars yet, but it will be! My husband I stayed here in June 2024 - both of us on motorcycles. We also tent camped here back in 2012 and, believe me, it's an incredible improvement! The grounds are very well-kept and the town is SO QUIET at night - no traffic at all. The honor fridge is well-stocked, but you will want to stop in a town before you get here to shop for meals you might want to bring or cook and for beer or wine (this will change once the market opens). The A-frame mini-cabins are going to be amazing to stay in - if you have camped in Scandinavia, you'll know how awesome those can be. We paid via Venmo. Were joined by a bicycling couple later in the evening. We all really appreciated the lawn furniture and hammock! Sure, you can camp in Shaniko for free, in the open field next to the public bathrooms, but we knew it was going to be a crazy windy night, and we also wanted shade, which Shaniko doesn't have. Really happy about this new campground and all their plans for it.
Jul 07, 2024 · Jayne CravensI tent camped at the RV Park in Antelope last week while on a Bikepacking trip across central Oregon. It was a super welcoming spot and there was plenty of space to camp on the grass. I had a spectacular sunset view out the door of my tent. Antelope is super quiet and made for a nice nights sleep. They had self serve water and cold drinks available along with a charging station for your devices AND e-bikes.The owners are very cyclist friendly and cyclists themselves. They are currently rehabbing the Market so soon there will be some additional food options.
Nov 02, 2023 · Pete ConklinI'm also giving this a 4 instead of 5 for the potential that's here and also the kindness of the owners. Despite the fact that we weren't staying, just spotted for a picnic, they were very gracious and welcoming. Absolutely would come here to stay. We got to see one of the A frames as well- nicely done and afforably priced!
Mar 26, 2025 · Dawna McLainThere is no ‘Market’. There is an RV/camp park out back of what use to be (and might be again someday) the ‘Market’. This review is for bikepackers that are looking for a 'stock up' point. There's only water in Antelope for now, Sept. 2023 (apparently). Check by the port-o-potty for the honor refrigerator. We couldn't find it.
