Burnt Ranch Campground

CA-299, Burnt Ranch, CA 95527, USA

4.0
Great campground right off the highway. Road sounds are the only reason not 5/5. Nice, newer fire pits with integrated grills at each site, and almost half the sites have bear boxes installed for food storage.Unmarked trails behind the camp lead to what sounds like the river. I unfortunately couldn't fully explore since I had my dog and the trail was kinda steep. Sites are somewhat private, but the campground is stepped and those in some sites above you can see down into your site. Each site has a concrete table and there are a couple drop toilets on site that are moderately clean. For $6/night, $3 with a pass, not a bad night's sleep. - Josh Snavely

Burnt Ranch Campground Introduce

For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Burnt Ranch area of California, Burnt Ranch Campground, located right off CA-299, presents a convenient and budget-friendly option. Reachable by phone at (530) 623-2121 or mobile at +1 530-623-2121, this campground offers some appealing features, though potential visitors should be aware of certain aspects highlighted in recent customer reviews.

One of the primary advantages of Burnt Ranch Campground is its accessibility. Being situated "right off the highway" makes it an easy stop for travelers and locals alike seeking a quick overnight stay or a basecamp for exploring the surrounding area. However, this proximity to the highway also comes with a notable drawback: "Road sounds are the only reason not 5/5" according to one reviewer. This suggests that while the convenience is a plus, noise from passing traffic is a factor that campers should be prepared for.

Despite the road noise, the campground offers some commendable amenities. Reviewers have noted "Nice, newer fire pits with integrated grills at each site," which is a significant plus for those who enjoy cooking over an open fire. Additionally, "almost half the sites have bear boxes installed for food storage," a crucial feature in bear country that provides added safety and peace of mind for campers concerned about wildlife encounters.

The natural environment around Burnt Ranch Campground seems to hold some potential for exploration. One reviewer mentioned "Unmarked trails behind the camp lead to what sounds like the river." While they "unfortunately couldn't fully explore since I had my dog and the trail was kinda steep," this suggests the possibility of accessing the river for recreational activities or enjoying the riverside scenery. However, the "unmarked" nature and steepness of the trail imply that caution and appropriate footwear might be necessary.

The layout of the campground offers a degree of privacy, with sites being "somewhat private." However, the terrain is "stepped," which means that "those in some sites above you can see down into your site." This tiered arrangement is something to consider when choosing a campsite, depending on your preference for seclusion.

Basic amenities at Burnt Ranch Campground include a "concrete table" at each site, providing a durable and useful surface for meals and activities. There are also "a couple drop toilets on site that are moderately clean." While not the most luxurious option, drop toilets serve a basic need, and the "moderately clean" assessment suggests they are maintained to a reasonable standard.

One of the most attractive features for budget-conscious local users searching for "camping near me" is the cost: "$6/night, $3 with a pass." This exceptionally low price point makes Burnt Ranch Campground a very affordable option for overnight stays. The availability of a discount with a pass (likely a regional or national parks pass) further enhances its value for frequent campers.

However, not all experiences at Burnt Ranch Campground have been uniformly positive. One reviewer noted that the location felt "Really high up, far from water." This contradicts the other reviewer's mention of a trail leading to the river and suggests a potential discrepancy in campsite location relative to the water source. It's possible that some sites are indeed quite a distance from the river, and the terrain might not offer views of it.

Another concerning experience was reported by a visitor who found the site "a bit confusing." They pulled in during the summer on a Friday afternoon at 4 pm but found that "the signs on the road said closed for the season" and "there was nobody there." This lack of clear signage and the absence of other campers created an unsettling feeling ("Felt a little off"). Adding to their disappointment, they confirmed the distance from the water, stating, "you're easily a couple hundred feet (reallllly far) from the water, that we couldn't even see it from the site." This led them to ultimately leave and find dispersed camping elsewhere. This review highlights a potential issue with signage or seasonal operation that local users might want to verify before planning a trip, especially during the shoulder seasons.

Considering these varied experiences, Burnt Ranch Campground offers a mixed bag for those seeking "camping near me." Its convenience right off Highway 299, coupled with the presence of newer fire pits with grills and bear boxes at some sites, are significant advantages. The low cost is also a major draw for budget travelers. However, the potential for road noise, the stepped and somewhat exposed nature of some campsites, the possibility of a steep and unmarked trail to the river (which might not be close to all sites), and the reported confusion about seasonal closure are factors that need to be taken into account.

For local users, it would be prudent to call the provided phone numbers to inquire about the current operating status, especially outside of peak summer season, to avoid the disappointment of finding it closed. Asking about the proximity of specific campsites to the river and the condition of the trail would also be beneficial. If road noise is a concern, bringing earplugs might be advisable.

Promotional information for Burnt Ranch Campground could emphasize its affordability ("$6/night, $3 with a pass"), its convenient location right off Highway 299, and the availability of fire pits with integrated grills and bear boxes at many sites. Highlighting the potential for hiking on unmarked trails leading to the river (with a caution about the trail's condition and steepness) could also attract adventurous campers. However, it's crucial to provide an objective picture by also mentioning the potential for road noise and the stepped nature of the campsites.

Given the conflicting information about the river's accessibility from all campsites, it would be wise for potential visitors to inquire specifically about this when making inquiries. The apparent seasonal closure issue also needs clarification to ensure a smooth experience for local users planning to camp at Burnt Ranch Campground.

In conclusion, Burnt Ranch Campground offers an affordable and conveniently located "camping near me" option in Burnt Ranch, CA. Its notable features include fire pits with grills and bear boxes at many campsites. While access to a river via unmarked trails is mentioned, the proximity to water seems to vary by site, and one report suggests it can be quite far. Road noise from the adjacent highway is a known factor, and there have been reports of confusion regarding seasonal closure. Local users should weigh the convenience and low cost against these potential drawbacks and consider contacting the campground directly for the most up-to-date information before planning their visit.
