Had a blast my first time camping here. The grounds were well kept, and there was lots of space for us to pitch our tents. The porta potties were extremely clean. I was very pleased. The only issue we had while we were there were fire ants and the camp host came by and handled that for us. Firewood was available for purchase by the camp host. We stayed on the group lot and there was plenty of space for us to sit and grill, multiple fire pits. You could hear the river at night and see the moon and stars bright in the sky. It was really beautiful and I wouldn’t mind camping there again. - Jamie Johnson

Camp Three Campground Introduce

Welcome to Camp Three Campground, a highly sought-after camping destination nestled along the picturesque Upper Kern River in Kernville, California. As a prominent option under "Camping Near Me," Camp Three offers a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities within the expansive Sequoia National Forest. Located at 99 Mountain Hwy 99, Kernville, CA, this campground provides a fantastic base for exploring the diverse landscapes and activities that the Kern River Valley has to offer. This introduction will provide an objective overview of the campground's environment, services, features, and relevant promotional information, drawing from available online resources and real customer experiences.

The environment at Camp Three Campground is truly its most captivating feature. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,800 feet, the campground is set amidst a beautiful canopy of oak and locust trees, providing ample shade and a serene atmosphere. The defining characteristic of Camp Three is its prime location right on the Upper Kern River. Many campsites offer direct access to the river, allowing campers to fall asleep to the soothing sounds of flowing water and enjoy scenic views. While the river's clarity can vary, especially after heavy rains, its presence is a constant highlight, offering a refreshing escape during warmer months. The surrounding landscape of the Sequoia National Forest boasts a diverse ecosystem, from gray pines and scrub oaks clinging to canyon walls to cottonwoods and willows lining the river's edge. This natural setting is ideal for observing local wildlife and experiencing the tranquility of the outdoors. The campsites themselves are often described as well-kept and spacious, particularly the group lots, which provide plenty of room for multiple tents and gathering areas, ensuring campers don't feel "super close to their neighbors." The open skies above the campground allow for brilliant views of the moon and stars, enhancing the overall wilderness experience.

Camp Three Campground provides essential services designed to facilitate a comfortable, albeit rustic, camping experience. For sanitation, the campground is equipped with vault toilets, also known as pit toilets. Notably, several reviews commend the cleanliness of these facilities, with some even mentioning the presence of toilet paper, which is a welcome surprise at such campgrounds. Potable (drinking) water is available through outdoor spigots scattered around the sites, ensuring campers have access to fresh water. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire pit with a grill rack, essential for outdoor cooking and gathering around a campfire. Bear boxes or food storage lockers are also provided at many sites, which are crucial for safely storing food and scented items given the presence of wildlife in the forest. While there are no showers or electrical hookups, reinforcing the primitive camping nature, the presence of a camp host on-site is a significant service. Camp hosts are available to assist campers, address issues like fire ants as noted in a review, and often sell firewood directly at the campground. This convenience ensures campers have access to necessary supplies and support during their stay. Trash collection services are also available to help maintain the cleanliness of the campground. The campground generally operates from May to September, with specific opening and closing dates depending on weather and forest conditions, and reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak season, which can be made up to six months in advance for standard sites and up to twelve months for group sites.

The features of Camp Three Campground make it an attractive destination for a variety of outdoor activities, placing it firmly within the "Camping Near Me" category for adventure seekers. Its proximity to the Kern River makes it a hotspot for water-based recreation, including fishing, wading, kayaking, and white-water rafting. While swimming in the river can be dangerous due to strong currents and is often prohibited, visitors can still enjoy floating on rafts, as suggested by a past camper. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the surrounding Sequoia National Forest offers countless opportunities for hiking. The campground provides access to trails that lead into the vast wilderness, including areas suitable for backpacking. The location is ideal for day trips to nearby attractions such as Sequoia National Park, the Trail of a Hundred Giants, and various giant sequoia groves within the Sequoia National Monument, which are unique natural wonders. The availability of group lots makes Camp Three an excellent choice for larger gatherings, family reunions, or multiple friends camping together, offering ample space and multiple fire pits to accommodate bigger parties. The overall spaciousness of individual sites also contributes to a more private and enjoyable camping experience. However, it's worth noting that while dogs are often brought by campers, specific rules regarding pets (e.g., leash requirements) should be confirmed, as some sources indicate no pets allowed. Campfire permits are required and can be obtained from local Ranger Stations or online.

For promotional purposes, Camp Three Campground is highlighted as an ideal destination for those seeking a quintessential California camping experience by the river. It appeals to hikers, anglers, rafters, and anyone looking for a serene outdoor escape. The opportunity to camp directly by the Kern River and under clear, star-filled skies is a major draw. The campground is promoted as a well-maintained facility with friendly camp hosts, ensuring a pleasant stay. While some campers have noted issues with campsite etiquette from neighbors (e.g., loud music), the natural beauty and the array of activities often outweigh these minor inconveniences. It's an excellent choice for families and groups due to its spacious sites, especially the dedicated group areas. Fees for standard campsites are around $34 per night, with additional vehicle fees, and group campsites are priced higher, accommodating up to 30 people. Prospective campers are encouraged to book reservations well in advance through Recreation.gov, particularly for weekend and peak season visits, as the campground is popular and can sell out. Visitors should come prepared with necessary supplies, including water shoes for river activities and be mindful of fire restrictions, which are common in the dry California climate. Camp Three Campground truly offers a memorable and immersive outdoor adventure in the heart of the Sequoia National Forest, inviting local users looking for "Camping Near Me" to discover its natural charm and recreational possibilities.
