The environment surrounding Kern River's Edge Campground Retreat is one of its most compelling features. Situated along the banks of the mighty Kern River, the campground provides immediate and direct access to its waters. This allows campers to enjoy a variety of river-based activities, from fishing for rainbow trout and bass to swimming, tubing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. The setting is described as a "high-desert park" at approximately 2,700 feet elevation, characterized by sandy ground and shady groves, offering a comfortable base even during warm California days. The sound of the river flowing is a constant, soothing backdrop to the camping experience. While the campground is close to the main road (Sierra Way), some reviewers note traffic noise throughout the day and night, it is generally considered a minor drawback given the overall positive experience and the sounds of the river. Utilities and Practicalities: Each site typically includes picnic tables, fire rings with cook-top lids, and potable water spigots throughout the park. A laundry room, air compressor station, and dump station are also available. While a main "store" might have inconsistent hours, a camp host is available for ice, wood, and game supplies.
Group and Event Hosting: The campground is well-suited for groups, offering double sites and larger group gathering areas like the "Bull Run Pavilion," a granite boulder outdoor amphitheater, and "Bud's Grove," which can be rented for private parties or shared by guests when not reserved. Kern River's Edge Campground Retreat Reviews
We really enjoyed our camping experience. The campground was clean and we had a great location next to the river. There was a lot of fun activities offered by the site including volleyball, corn hole and shuffle board. They provide you with the balls, beanbags etc at no extra cost. The site was nice and level and the sand made for a comfortable base for our tent. It was close to the Trail of 100 Giants and various hot springs. The bathrooms/showers were very clean and well maintained. There. were a couple downsides with our stay; the main "store" was closed more than it was open although there was a host staying in the campground that you could go to for ice and wood and items to play the games mentioned above. The other negative was it was very close to the main road so you could hear the traffic throughout the day/night. Finally, we ordered 5 cords of wood but what was delivered was a pile of wood that looks like a lot less. Plus they penalize you if you pick up dead logs from the area to use as firewood. Overall, I think a more secluded area would have been better but if you have kids, they will enjoy the games and other amenities.
Apr 11, 2025 · Daren Di NicolaHi Kern River’s Edge Crew,Just want to extend my gratitude for keeping up such a great campground. I booked a double site and Sandy Beach for my brother's 10 person bachelor's rafting/camping weekend. After a long morning on the water, we were all pleasantly impressed with the clean, comfortable, and organized campground we called home. The weather was perfect and the river was right over the berm every time we wanted to take a cool quick dip. The staff was super friendly and helpful. They routinely checked on us to make sure were comfortable. I would highly recommend this campground to anyone. In fact, I'm already looking at my calendar to see when I can come back with my wife and kids. This place is great for families…including pets. See you soon, Kern River's Edge!
Oct 09, 2024 · LadyAnne DuterteVisited for a group campout. Staff was kind and accommodating. Campground was well kept and clean, especially the bathrooms. A selection of campsites have power and water, but most of the campground is dry. The corner sites had the most room, not all of the sites would support a travel trailer. Less than 10 minutes from Kernville, this was an epic and serene location with river access. Coin operated hot showers available, a nice camp store and friendly people. I look forward to returning in the summer. No RV dump facilities on site. The recommended spot is called "Camp 9" campground and is a primitive, Forest Service campground located at 8547 Sierra Way, Kernville CA 93238.
Nov 23, 2024 · Tim YargeauOverall the site itself is nice. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to enjoy because the amount of people on the campground and the amount of noise and music was too much. This is not a camping experience. You do not have your own complete space, you are side by side with people’s loud music, dogs and kinds.Quite hours are at 10pm - it would be useful to have the camp host drive around to make sure everyone is obeying the rules that they made us sign 10 times before arriving. There are many sites in the area - I would suggest visiting other locations for better prices.
Sep 30, 2024 · Camille GanWe had a blast as we reserved bolder beach and sandy beach for our big family gathering. We had a great turn out, 32 out 36 showed up. The campground was good, and the service was great. This was my first time here but our family's second time around. I rented a trailer for some of our elder ladies that wanted to come but were not sure on the tent deal. Kern provided some referrals from trailer companies they have worked with in the past and we picked a great one "Camping on the Kern Vacation Trailers". Overall, it was great, will try to make this a yearly family reunion.
