Mixed feelings about this place. If you want to take the feel of real camping where you have to park almost a quarter mile far on the road side and then drag all your camping stuff in a strong cart on a path along the hill with ups and downs with the help of a partner, this is the place you can book.We got a couple of Walkie Talkies that helped a lot for the communication among family members (specially w/ kids). There is no electricity and water supply but two restrooms are there. We arranged the water for drinking, cooking and other usage. This place is for 50 people but we were three families and still enjoyed a lot. A nice short trail is enjoyable. Start from the flat side if you are with family and kids and take it easy so that while returning you will be coming downwards. There is a pond where you can hear the sound of ducks(probably). We found this area pretty safe as there is a fencing around whole campground. You can also see some animals/birds going towards pond.Forgot to add that that there is a firepit as well.If there was an electric and a water supply, it would have been an amazing place for the families with kids (specially for Indian families :) ) - Dharmendra Tomar

Environment and Location

Cedar Group Camp is nestled within the expansive Del Valle Regional Park, a natural gem in the East Bay area. The park is characterized by its rolling, oak-studded hillsides and the prominent Lake Del Valle, a five-mile-long reservoir that serves as a major recreational hub. The environment surrounding Cedar Group Camp provides a genuine sense of being in nature, away from the more developed areas. A key aspect highlighted by customer reviews is its "hike-in" nature: "you have to park almost a quarter mile far on the road side and then drag all your camping stuff in a strong cart on a path along the hill with ups and downs with the help of a partner." This feature immediately sets it apart from drive-up campsites, contributing to a more secluded and authentic wilderness feel. The reviews also mention a "nice short trail" that is enjoyable, and a "pond where you can hear the sound of ducks (probably)," suggesting a natural water feature and associated wildlife. The presence of "fencing around whole campground" and observations of "animals/birds going towards pond" indicate an area where nature thrives, yet safety measures are in place. While the Livermore area experiences hot, dry summers, the site is described as having "partial shade," which can offer some respite. The overall impression is one of a serene, natural setting, ideal for groups who appreciate tranquility and a bit of physical challenge in accessing their campsite. The park's location near Livermore provides access to supplies and services, balancing the rustic experience with practical needs.

Services and Features

Cedar Group Camp is explicitly described as a "primitive site," which means it offers fundamental amenities tailored for group use rather than extensive facilities. It is designed to accommodate a minimum of 17 people and a maximum of 50. Key features include picnic tables (specifically, three 8' tables and two serving tables), an XL BBQ pit for communal cooking, and a fire circle with benches for gatherings around a campfire. The presence of a "firepit as well" is a standard and much-appreciated feature for group camping. For sanitation, the site provides "two restrooms," which are chemical/vault toilets, as is common for primitive sites. However, a crucial detail from reviews is that "There is no electricity and water supply." This means groups must "arranged the water for drinking, cooking and other usage" and be prepared for a truly off-grid experience regarding power. Furthermore, there is "No access to showers." While flush toilets and showers are available in the main family campground area of Del Valle Regional Park, campers at Cedar Group Camp would need to travel to those facilities. The hike-in aspect is a significant feature; groups "must hike in all of your gear," and "buses, RVs, trailers, food trucks, or caterers are prohibited," emphasizing its tent-only nature. Parking is limited, with only "10 parking passes" issued, and additional passes are not available for purchase, requiring careful carpooling planning for larger groups. Beer and wine are permitted with an additional $25 permit, but hard alcohol is prohibited. The reservation holder must be at least 21 years old to obtain the alcohol permit, and consumption is restricted to the campsite. The focus here is on self-reliance and enjoying a more traditional, less developed camping experience, making it "a great place for scout campouts," as one review notes, due to the "good hiking and good shelter."

Promotional Information and Target Audience

Cedar Group Camp is primarily promoted by the East Bay Regional Park District as a primitive group camping destination. Its appeal to the "Camping Near Me" audience, particularly for groups, lies in its secluded, hike-in nature, offering an authentic outdoor experience away from the more developed sites. The park highlights the natural beauty of Del Valle Regional Park and the extensive recreational opportunities available, such as hiking, which is a strong feature of this camp given the trails nearby. The target audience includes scout troops, youth organizations, large family gatherings, and other groups seeking a rustic, back-to-basics camping adventure. The review mentioning "Indian families" suggests it can be a suitable option for diverse cultural groups who enjoy community-focused camping. The pricing for Cedar Group Camp is $75 per night, plus an $8 reservation fee, making it an affordable option for larger groups. A security deposit equal to one night's fee is required upon reservation. Reservations are mandatory and must be made at least three business days in advance, exclusively by phone through the East Bay Regional Park District's reservation line (1-888-327-2757, option 2). This direct booking process ensures that group organizers are fully informed about the site's primitive nature, the hike-in requirement, and the lack of onsite water and electricity, managing expectations upfront. The park's commitment to maintaining a safe and regulated environment, with clear rules on vehicle limits, alcohol, and waste, is also an implicit part of its promotional appeal, attracting responsible groups.

Understanding Customer Impressions and Recommendations

The customer reviews for Cedar Group Camp provide a candid and highly informative perspective. The "Mixed feelings" initially expressed are thoroughly explained, detailing the effort required to access the site ("park almost a quarter mile far...then drag all your camping stuff"). This upfront honesty is crucial for managing expectations. The use of "Walkie Talkies" for communication among family members due to the spread-out nature or lack of cell service (which can be spotty in some parts of Del Valle) is a practical tip. The most significant points highlighted are the absence of electricity and water supply, which require groups to be self-sufficient and "arranged the water for drinking, cooking and other usage." This is a critical piece of information for planning. However, despite these primitive conditions, the reviewers "still enjoyed a lot," emphasizing the positive aspects: a "nice short trail," the sound of ducks from a "pond," and the sense of safety due to "fencing around whole campground" and observing "animals/birds." The final sentiment that "If there was an electric and a water supply, it would have been an amazing place for the families with kids" perfectly encapsulates the balance: it's a great primitive spot, but not for those expecting full amenities. The endorsement as a "Great place for scout campouts" further solidifies its target audience. While the "fire pit was not great but okay," it still served its purpose. Overall, the reviews confirm that Cedar Group Camp delivers on its promise of a rustic, community-oriented, hike-in camping experience, ideal for groups prepared for self-sufficiency and who value a strong connection with nature over modern conveniences.
