Dalles Campground

Lolo National Forest, Forest Road #7500, Clinton, MT 59825, USA

4.0
Great campground with several spots right on the creek. There is water available (from a hand pump) and pit toilets. This is the 4th campground up Rock Creek road from the Saw mill fishing access and it has the best sites available of the 4 (in my opinion) Just a couple hundred yards from the suspension bridge and Welcome creek trail head. There are several friendly mule deer that will bester you to no end but it's kind of cool to see them hanging around. - R Brown (USMC)

Dalles Campground Introduce

Seeking a picturesque camping experience within easy reach of your local area? Dalles Campground, nestled in the Lolo National Forest along Forest Road #7500 near Clinton, MT, offers a compelling option for those searching the 'camping near me' category. Situated along the renowned Rock Creek Road, this campground is lauded for its beautiful setting and access to both a creek and the river. While it provides a rustic camping experience with basic amenities, its natural charm and proximity to recreational opportunities make it a noteworthy destination for local outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the standout features of Dalles Campground, as highlighted by a satisfied camper, is the availability of "several spots right on the creek." Waking up to the soothing sounds of flowing water and having direct access to the creek can significantly enhance the tranquility and enjoyment of a camping trip. These creek-side locations likely offer a particularly immersive natural experience and may be highly sought after by visitors.

In terms of essential amenities, Dalles Campground provides water via a hand pump. While this is a more traditional method of obtaining water compared to spigots, it offers a reliable source for drinking and other camping needs. Campers should be prepared to use a hand pump to access water and may want to bring their own water purification methods as a precaution, depending on their comfort level and the latest recommendations from the forest service.

For restroom facilities, the campground is equipped with pit toilets (also referred to as vault toilets in another review). These are non-flushing toilets common in more rustic or remote camping areas. While they serve a necessary function, campers should be aware that they may have a natural odor and might not be as comfortable as flush toilets. Packing personal sanitation items is generally advisable when using pit or vault toilets.

One reviewer, familiar with the campgrounds along Rock Creek Road, expressed the opinion that Dalles Campground "has the best sites available of the 4" located further up from the Sawmill fishing access. This suggests that Dalles Campground offers a superior camping experience compared to other nearby options, possibly due to the quality of the individual campsites, the scenic views, or the overall ambiance of the area.

Adding to its appeal, Dalles Campground is conveniently located just "a couple hundred yards from the suspension bridge and Welcome creek trail head." The proximity to a suspension bridge can be an attraction in itself, offering scenic views and a unique landmark to explore. More significantly, the immediate access to the Welcome Creek trail head opens up opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding Lolo National Forest. This makes Dalles Campground an excellent basecamp for those interested in trekking and immersing themselves in the wilderness.

Wildlife encounters are also a notable aspect of the Dalles Campground experience. One reviewer mentioned the presence of "several friendly mule deer that will bester you to no end but it's kind of cool to see them hanging around." While the deer are described as friendly and interesting to observe, campers should still maintain a respectful distance and avoid feeding them, as this can disrupt their natural behaviors and potentially lead to unwanted interactions. Another reviewer noted the presence of eagles, which would be a majestic sight for wildlife enthusiasts. However, they also mentioned "lots of annoying flies," which can be a common issue in natural areas, especially near water sources. Campers should come prepared with insect repellent to mitigate this inconvenience.

Another reviewer described Dalles Campground as a "gorgeous spot along the river." This reinforces the campground's attractive natural setting and the allure of being near a flowing river. However, this reviewer also pointed out that the "Campground is not at river level. There is ~20 ft bank leading down to the river." This is important information for potential campers, as it indicates that while the river is accessible, there is a significant drop-off to consider, which might be a factor for families with young children or individuals with mobility issues. Access to the river might require navigating this bank.

The same reviewer also corroborated the presence of "Vault toilets and hand pumped water," aligning with the previous review. Additionally, they provided important information about the access road, describing it as "rough... mostly gravel and traffic generates a lot of dust." Local users planning a trip to Dalles Campground should be prepared for these road conditions. Vehicles with higher clearance might be preferable, and campers should be mindful of dust, especially when setting up or packing up their campsites. Keeping belongings covered might be advisable.

In summary, Dalles Campground offers a scenic and potentially rewarding camping experience in the Lolo National Forest for local users seeking a getaway in the 'camping near me' category. Its prime location along Rock Creek, with some sites directly on the creek, and its proximity to the suspension bridge and the Welcome Creek trail head, make it ideal for nature lovers and hikers. The availability of hand-pumped water and pit/vault toilets provides basic amenities for a rustic stay. Wildlife sightings, including friendly mule deer and eagles, add to the natural charm. However, potential visitors should be aware of the rough and dusty access road, the 20-foot bank down to the river, and the potential for annoying flies. By being prepared for these conditions and appreciating the natural beauty of the area, local campers can enjoy a memorable experience at Dalles Campground.
