Dupuis Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" that combines diverse outdoor activities with a natural and sometimes rustic environment? Dupuis Campground, located at 22500 SW Kanner Hwy in Canal Point, Florida, might be the local gem you've been searching for. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground, run by the South Florida Water Management District, offers a unique experience with features catering to equestrians, hikers, hunters, and those who simply appreciate the beauty of nature, all while being remarkably accessible.
A Diverse Environment for Exploration:
Dupuis Campground is described by one visitor as their "all-time favorite" among parks run by the South Florida Water Management District, and for good reason. The area boasts "miles of hiking," suggesting ample opportunities to explore the natural flora and fauna of the region. One reviewer even mentioned the presence of "all kinds of flora and fungi," indicating a rich and interesting ecosystem for nature enthusiasts to discover. The landscape likely includes typical South Florida terrain, possibly with a mix of wetlands, prairies, and perhaps some forested areas, providing a varied backdrop for outdoor adventures.
For equestrian visitors, Dupuis Campground features an "Equestrian Campground" with trails that are reported to be "well marked and maintained." This makes it an appealing destination for local horse owners looking to enjoy riding in a natural setting. However, one equestrian camper did issue a "word of caution" regarding a "large red barn with stalls and paddocks" that they found to be "infested with rats," noting a strong smell and the reluctance of horses to enter. This is an important point for potential equestrian users to be aware of, although the reviewer still rated their overall experience positively in other aspects.
Services and Features That Stand Out:
Despite the rustic nature of some aspects, Dupuis Campground offers some appreciated amenities. Both reviewers mentioned the "restroom and shower facilities" being "clean" and "immaculate," with one specifically highlighting "HOT SHOWERS!!" and noting that the bathrooms are "cleaned everyday." This attention to hygiene is a significant plus for any camper. One reviewer also noted that "water hoses need replacing from time to time," suggesting that while generally functional, some infrastructure may require periodic maintenance.
A particularly remarkable feature mentioned by one very satisfied camper is that camping is "Totally free" after making an online reservation. This incredible value makes Dupuis Campground an exceptionally attractive option for budget-conscious local users looking for a "camping near me" experience without the added cost of campsite fees. The online reservation system also adds a layer of convenience for planning your visit.
Beyond the basic amenities, Dupuis Campground seems to foster a sense of community. One visitor recounted playing dominoes with "old timers" who are frequent visitors, indicating a welcoming atmosphere and opportunities for social interaction among campers.
Unique Natural and Recreational Opportunities:
Dupuis Campground offers some unique recreational opportunities. One reviewer mentioned hunting a boar and harvesting the meat, indicating that hunting is permitted in the area, subject to regulations. This could be a significant draw for local hunters looking for a nearby location.
For those who enjoy wildlife viewing, the presence of "horses everywhere" (presumably wild or belonging to equestrian campers) and the chance to see "champion trophy Horses" adds to the natural appeal. At night, the experience seems equally captivating, with one camper describing hearing "a pack of Coyotes and the hunting dogs that was chasing them," offering a glimpse into the local wildlife activity. The stargazing is also highly praised, with the night sky described as looking "like a computer screensaver" filled with stars, and the opportunity to see shooting stars with a little patience.
Points to Consider Before Your Visit:
While the overall sentiment in the reviews is positive, potential visitors should be aware of a couple of issues raised. The rat infestation in the equestrian barn is a concern for those planning to bring horses. Additionally, one camper reported the theft of solar lights, which, while the host indicated it was an infrequent occurrence, serves as a reminder to secure personal belongings. However, these isolated incidents did not overshadow the positive experiences of the reviewers.
Why Dupuis Campground Should Be on Your "Camping Near Me" List:
For local users in South Florida seeking a diverse and engaging "camping near me" experience, Dupuis Campground offers a compelling package. The combination of free camping (with online reservation), extensive hiking trails, equestrian facilities, hunting opportunities, clean amenities (especially the hot showers and restrooms), and stunning natural beauty, including exceptional stargazing, makes it a standout destination. Whether you're an equestrian looking for well-maintained trails, a hiker eager to explore local flora and fauna, a hunter seeking a nearby area, or simply someone wanting a peaceful and cost-effective nature getaway, Dupuis Campground appears to have something to offer.
The welcoming community vibe, as suggested by the dominoes game, adds another layer of appeal. Despite a couple of noted issues, the overwhelmingly positive feedback, particularly regarding the natural environment and the value (free camping!), makes Dupuis Campground a strong contender for your next local outdoor adventure.

Dupuis Campground Reviews
I visited the Equestrian Campground for 3 days w my horse The trails are well marked and maintained. It’s easy to get lost if you don’t follow the numeric system displayed at the white cross markers. Word of caution: the large red barn with stalls and paddocks is infested with rats. The smell of rat piss is so strong that horses do not want to enter. You can actually hear them at all times of the day. The SFWMD should put up traps or poison because it poses a serious health threat to both humans and animals. This is why I am giving 3 stars. Otherwise, the restroom and shower facilities are clean. The water hoses need replacing from time to time. Everything else was wonderful. (
Apr 06, 2025 · Naomi SarasolaI've been to multiple parks run by the south Florida water management district. This is my all-time favorite. Miles of hiking, shot a boar, harvested the meat, and threw out the remains. All kinds of flora and fungi. HOT SHOWERS!! AND THEY ARE IMPECCABLE. Bathrooms are cleaned everyday. The only annoyance I had was that someone stole some solar lights from my neighbor. Totally killed the camping vibe. A**hole took the lights without the solar panels that power them. I was told by the host that hasn't happened in years. Still give it five stars. I made a reservation online and camped Totally free. Played domino's with some old timers (they kicked my a**) that are frequent visitors to the park. Horses everywhere and if your lucky you'll see champion trophy Horses. At nighttime I heard a pack of Coyotes and the hunting dogs that was chasing them. The stars looked like a computer screensaver. If you lay down on your back and look up for about 8 minutes your vision will adjust and you'll start seeing shooting starts. Make the reservation.
Jan 12, 2025 · tomas forstmannOnce again, we really enjoyed the quiet and beautiful surroundings at Dupuis Campground. This place is a great example of public land that we all need to work hard to ensure it stays available to us. The restroom and shower area was clean and convenient ... the grounds are beautiful and inviting ... the few campers that were around were quiet and respectful, and the entire place just presents a peaceful and welcoming energy.
Apr 10, 2025 · Ginger CombsThe equestrian campground is a great place as the horses had plenty of large green grass paddocks. We had a nice secluded place for the horse trailer/camper. Horse trails are clearly marked. It was like disneyland for people with horses. We had a great time loping through the open spaces and canopies.
Nov 25, 2024 · Karen CorriganI had a very nice stay. I was there one week in March. I discovered the road behind the park to ride my bike on. There are about 7 miles of good road to ride. I rode to the Pier, that's a very pretty area. I rode a total of 6 miles on a very rough trail filled with hog ruts looking for the Boardwalk. I missed the turn-off for it. A fellow camper knew where it was, and we rode to it the next day. Officially, this site is closed. The Boardwalk has been neglected and allowed to go into disrepair. It's so sad as this area is beautiful. The views of birds, trees, and bright red fungus on the trees are a treat. The campground is very nice and is quiet at night. The hot showers were nice after dry camping for weeks. There's a sanitation station on the way in that the host has to unlock. There's water available at many locations throughout the park.
