Are you searching for a picturesque "camping near me" experience nestled in the beauty of the Nantahala National Forest? Look no further than Horse Cove Campground, located in the Cheoah Ranger District near Tapoco, NC. Situated at Joyce Kilmer Rd, Tapoco, NC 28771, USA, this campground offers beautiful campsites, particularly along the river, making it a potentially ideal destination for local users seeking a natural escape.
Riverside Beauty in Nantahala National Forest
The environment of Horse Cove Campground is clearly a major draw, with reviewers consistently mentioning the beauty of the campsites. One camper noted, "Beautiful campsites here," setting a positive tone for the location's natural appeal. A significant feature highlighted is the lower loop's proximity to the river. According to a review, while the upper loop was temporarily closed due to a water leak, "the lower loop along the river is still open (I'm sure most people want to camp along the river anyways)." This suggests that many of the coveted campsites are located right by the water, offering scenic views and easy access to the river.
Camping by the river often provides a tranquil atmosphere, the soothing sounds of flowing water, and opportunities for water-related activities. One reviewer shared, "Our spot the last two times was right on the water. The boys enjoyed waking up and swimming in the lake." While the review mentions swimming in the "lake," given the context of camping along the river, this might refer to a wider part of the river that allows for swimming or a nearby lake accessible from the campground. Regardless, the presence of water suitable for swimming adds to the appeal for families and those looking to cool off during their camping trip.
The Nantahala National Forest itself is known for its lush greenery, diverse wildlife, and numerous outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, fishing, and scenic drives. Horse Cove Campground's location within this forest ensures that campers are surrounded by natural beauty and have access to explore the wider area.
First-Come, First-Served Camping
A crucial piece of information for those planning to visit Horse Cove Campground is that it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. As one reviewer advised, "...come early to get a good site." This means that reservations are not typically accepted, and campers need to arrive and choose an available campsite. For popular riverside spots, arriving early, especially on weekends or during peak season, is highly recommended to secure a desirable location.
Fees and Management
The cost of camping is also mentioned, with one reviewer stating, "Fees are $15 a night now." This provides a clear indication of the current nightly rate for a campsite. It's always a good idea to confirm the most up-to-date fee information with the US Forest Service, which manages campgrounds within the National Forest.
The management of the campground is indirectly praised through a positive anecdote shared by a camper: "I went and paid for my spot and the ranger happened to be there when I did. Went back to my camp site and the ranger came back and gave me my money. He said the spot I was occupying was a free site. I thought that was pretty awesome." This story highlights the integrity and helpfulness of the rangers at Horse Cove Campground, suggesting a well-managed and honest environment.

Apr 29, 2024 · Phillip HoganAwesome place to camp. I have been three times. Twice in the same spot. I went and paid for my spot and the ranger happened to be there when I did. Went back to my camp site and the ranger came back and gave me my money. He said the spot I was occupying was a free site. I thought that was pretty awesome. Our spot the last two times was right on the water. The boys enjoyed waking up and swimming in the lake. Great place to take the family and get away from the city.
May 13, 2020 · aaron reedWe recently stayed a night at the lower sites on the way back from Daytona Bike Week so that we could get more riding in on the way home to Michigan. We did not want to leave! The lower sites have fire rings and very large picnic tables and a good sized bathroom (No sink, lighting, or shower) if needed. We we're over 40' with truck and trailer but managed to have a few choices to pick from since everything was empty. I imagine this can change over the summer season, but for the inexpensive cost per night.. it's definitely a place I would return to if I get the chance. The running creek at night was very relaxing but keep in mind it gets VERY dark with no lighting. Perfect off the grid camping.. you'll have no cell or internet service. Pick up some firewood locally and you should be good to go.
Mar 20, 2018 · Rodrick CallesIt’s a beautiful spot offered on a first come first serve basis. The location is amazing, but the campsites are pretty close. The bathroom is also broken and there is no running water. Might be an issue for some, but was fine for me.
Oct 15, 2023 · TheMaloneyJoyce Kilmer NF is walking distance from here, the fishing is good & wildlife is abundant. My wife saw a huge salamander an hour later a bald eagle dove into the water at the fishing hole to snatch it up.
