The environment of Meramec State Park is a significant draw for campers. The park encompasses a substantial area along the Meramec River, characterized by rolling hills, dense hardwood forests, and numerous caves and springs. This diverse terrain offers a variety of habitats for wildlife and provides scenic beauty for outdoor enthusiasts. Campers can expect to be surrounded by nature, with opportunities for hiking on well-maintained trails that lead to overlooks, through wooded areas, and past geological features. The proximity to the Meramec River allows for activities such as fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The overall atmosphere is one of natural immersion, providing a peaceful escape from urban environments. Local users seeking "camping near me" with a desire to explore Missouri's natural landscapes will find the setting of Meramec State Park appealing.
In terms of services and features, Meramec State Park Campgrounds typically offer a range of amenities to accommodate different types of campers, from tent campers to RV owners. Standard features often include designated campsites, picnic tables, and fire rings. Potable water sources and restroom facilities with showers are usually available, though the specific amenities can vary between different campground loops within the park. Given that the review mentions a specific campsite (#68) and the challenges faced by a 35-foot fifth-wheel camper, it is evident that the campgrounds offer sites of varying sizes and configurations. The availability of a reservation system, as indicated by the reviewer's call to reserve a site, is a key service for planning a camping trip. However, the negative review also highlights potential issues with the accuracy of information provided during the reservation process, particularly regarding the suitability of sites for larger RVs. It is important for local users to seek detailed and accurate information about specific campsite dimensions and accessibility when making reservations.
For local users searching under the category "camping near me," Meramec State Park Campgrounds offers the allure of camping within a well-established state park with access to a variety of natural attractions and recreational activities. The potential for hiking, exploring caves (though specific cave access for campers isn't mentioned in the reviews), and enjoying the Meramec River makes it a destination with diverse appeal. However, the negative review serves as a cautionary note regarding the importance of obtaining accurate and detailed information about campsite suitability, especially for RV campers. Local users with larger rigs should be particularly diligent in confirming site dimensions and accessibility with park staff before making a reservation.
The negative review details a frustrating experience involving inaccurate information provided during the reservation process, difficulties maneuvering a large RV into the assigned campsite due to poorly placed obstacles and soft ground, and challenges in resolving the issue with customer support. The reviewer also mentions being charged a cancellation fee despite the problem being no fault of their own. This experience underscores the need for local users to communicate directly with the park's local staff to get precise details about campsites, especially when traveling with larger equipment. The availability of a customer support phone number is mentioned, but the reviewer's difficulty in getting adequate assistance through this channel suggests that direct contact with the park might be more effective.
The second review, which seems unrelated to the campground itself as it discusses "very nice old wood furniture" and an "owner," might be mistakenly associated with the campground listing. This highlights the importance of relying on reviews that specifically address the camping facilities and experiences. Therefore, local users should prioritize reviews that discuss the campsites, amenities, park environment, and interactions with campground staff.
Considering the platform category "camping near me," Meramec State Park Campgrounds has the potential to be a desirable destination for local outdoor enthusiasts. The natural beauty of the park and the opportunities for recreation are significant draws. However, the negative experience reported by an RV camper regarding campsite suitability and reservation accuracy should prompt local users, especially those with larger vehicles, to exercise caution and seek detailed information directly from the park before booking. Ensuring that the chosen campsite can accommodate their equipment and that they have clear directions and access information is crucial for a positive experience.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, Meramec State Park could effectively promote its campgrounds to local users by highlighting the park's natural beauty, the variety of recreational activities available (hiking, fishing, river access), and the different types of campsites offered (tent and RV). Providing accurate and detailed information about campsite sizes, amenities, and accessibility on their website and during phone reservations is essential. Special promotions could include off-season rates, family camping packages, or guided nature programs. Emphasizing the park's proximity to Sullivan and other local communities would also be beneficial in attracting regional campers.
To better serve local users, Meramec State Park could consider enhancing the information available on its reservation system and website, including detailed dimensions and photos of individual campsites, particularly those suitable for RVs. Providing direct contact information for the park's local staff who have firsthand knowledge of the campgrounds would also improve customer service. Addressing the issues raised in the negative review, such as the placement of obstacles and the accuracy of campsite descriptions, would be crucial in ensuring a positive experience for all visitors. Clear policies regarding cancellations that are due to inaccurate information provided by park staff would also be beneficial.
In conclusion, Meramec State Park Campgrounds offers a potentially rewarding "camping near me" experience for local users seeking to enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of a Missouri State Park. The park's diverse environment and range of activities are significant attractions. However, the negative review regarding campsite suitability for a large RV and issues with the reservation process serves as a reminder for local users to obtain detailed and accurate information directly from the park, especially when traveling with larger equipment. By improving communication and providing comprehensive details about their campsites, Meramec State Park can better serve the local camping community and ensure a more positive experience for all visitors.

Meramec State Park Campgrounds Reviews
What a HORRIBLE experience! I wish I could give zero stars. I called a few days ago to reserved a campsite for a whole week. I let the nice lady on the phone know I have a 35 foot 5th wheel camper. I was assured I'd have no problem camping in campsite #68 because the pad was more than 55 feet long. When I arrived I found two trees and a post right at the entrance to the campsite. Directly across from the campsite, right where I needed to drive to back into my assigned spot, was another post. I tried removing the badly placed posts, but they wouldn't budge. I tried also to drive over the grass to maneuver into the campsite, but the ground was too soft. There was no way to get my camper into that campsite, so I called the customer support phone number that I received with the reservation confirmation email. After being repeatedly put on hold for 15 minutes, I was told there was nothing they could do and that I'd have to call another number to speak with someone local. Someone local is who I should have spoken to from the start, because the people answering the reservation line obviously have no information about what can fit at each campsite. My frustration level was already maxed out, so I just requested a cancellation. Even though I had to cancel through no fault of my own, I was still charged a cancellation fee. I'll never stay at another Missouri State Park again.
Apr 18, 2025 · Lonnie HuffmanIf you are looking for very nice old wood furniture, this is definitely the place to look. Prices are reasonable for the quality of what you are getting. Things are clean and not even dusty. Laid out well so you can get around to look at things. Only negative was the owner was not very friendly.
Apr 11, 2025 · Sharon CrockerVery large and beautiful area. Lots of trails and plenty of picnic space and playgrounds. Enjoyed it being not busy at all with beautiful weather in March. Camp host was nice and was driving around frequently.
Mar 13, 2025 · Amy ByersA large group of unfriendly, very belligerently drunken men were camping right next to us at Merman campgrounds this weekend. They blared obnoxious music through a speaker until about 2 a.m. while drinking and screaming obscenities even farther into the night. There were no rangers or anyone at the campgrounds to ask for help at all. We barely slept all night. The next morning we were finally able to get in touch with the supervisors of the campground but the group was only asked to keep it down, not told to leave. We couldn't stand another night of being stressed and sleepless so we left.I find it pretty unfair that we were being quiet and respectful to others yet we had to be the ones to leave the site we had paid for because people who were being extremely disrespectful to everyone there were allowed to stay. Their dog was not on a leash, they were chasing the local wildlife, drinking and partying all night and picking loud fights with each other right by our tent area. They disturbed us and everyone else in the area way past the posted quiet hours. We felt beyond uncomfortable to the point of not knowing if we were safe. Needless to say, we will not be back. Very disappointing.
Oct 20, 2024 · zoe xSuper nice park and campground. Beautiful this time of year, big sites and a lot of open areas for kids, dogs and you are not cramped at all! Cool cave and hiking! Didn't use the bathrooms as we were self contained so not sure how they were.
