Pine Ridge Campground Introduce
For those searching for "camping near me" in the Shevlin, Minnesota area, Pine Ridge Campground, located within Itasca State Park in Shevlin, MN 56676, USA, offers a highly regarded camping experience. Based on recent customer reviews, this introduction aims to provide a detailed overview of the campground's environment, services, and features, highlighting why it is considered a "nice campground" in a "beautiful and idyllic" setting, and what potential visitors should know when planning their stay.
The environment surrounding Pine Ridge Campground is deeply intertwined with the natural beauty of Itasca State Park. This renowned park is home to the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River and boasts pristine forests, sparkling lakes, and diverse wildlife. Pine Ridge Campground's location within the park provides campers with immediate access to this stunning environment. Reviews highlight the "beautiful and idyllic" atmosphere, suggesting a picturesque setting conducive to relaxation and outdoor exploration. The campground is situated a "short walk to the beach on Lake Itasca," offering opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the lake. Additionally, the presence of a "terrific 16 mile paved bike path around the lake" caters to cycling enthusiasts, allowing for scenic rides through the park's landscapes. While the bike path has some "uphill/downhill" sections, they are described as "nothing overly strenuous," making it accessible for a range of fitness levels. The "great hammocking trees" at some spots within the campground further emphasize the inviting and natural environment, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The opportunity to "walk across the Mississippi at its headwater," a unique feature of Itasca State Park, is also easily accessible from the campground, adding a significant natural and educational element to the camping experience.
Pine Ridge Campground offers several services and features aimed at ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay for its guests. One of the frequently mentioned positives is the presence of "clean bathrooms," which is a fundamental aspect of a pleasant camping experience. For basic necessities and convenience, the "lodging office sells ice and firewood, along with some simple snacks." This eliminates the need to travel outside the park for these essential camping supplies. The "DNR staff" (Department of Natural Resources) who manage the park and campground are consistently described as "very friendly," indicating a welcoming and helpful service environment. However, it is crucial to note a significant change in the "reservation rules." According to a review, if guests "don't show up on the first night of your reservation you risk losing your entire stay." This policy change aims to prevent "gaming" the reservation system by reserving multiple nights to secure a weekend stay without intending to use the earlier nights. Therefore, it is imperative for potential visitors to "make sure you read them on the website" to fully understand the current reservation policies and avoid any unexpected issues. The campground is described as "full" during a summer weekend in 2024, indicating its popularity and the importance of adhering to the reservation guidelines.
The features of Pine Ridge Campground contribute to its popularity as a desirable "camping near me" destination. The spaciousness of the sites, despite the campground being full, is a notable feature, as it "didn't feel cramped." This suggests good site layout and adequate space between camping areas, enhancing the overall comfort and privacy of guests. The easy access to the beach on Lake Itasca is a significant feature for those looking to enjoy water activities. The 16-mile paved bike path around the lake provides excellent recreational opportunities for cyclists. The availability of "great hammocking trees" at some campsites adds to the relaxation and enjoyment of the natural setting. The clean bathrooms are a fundamental feature ensuring a comfortable stay. The sale of ice and firewood within the campground offers convenience for campers. The friendly DNR staff contributes to a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Finally, the proximity to the headwaters of the Mississippi River offers a unique and memorable experience for visitors. However, potential campers must be aware of the strict new reservation policy regarding first-night check-in to avoid losing their entire reservation.
For those seeking "camping near me" that combines natural beauty with recreational opportunities and essential amenities, Pine Ridge Campground at Itasca State Park is an excellent choice. The "beautiful and idyllic" environment, with easy access to Lake Itasca and a scenic bike trail, caters to a variety of outdoor interests. The clean bathrooms and the availability of ice and firewood on-site add to the convenience. The friendly DNR staff further enhances the welcoming atmosphere. However, the critical point to note is the updated reservation policy, which requires adherence to the first-night check-in to secure the entire reservation. This is a crucial piece of information for anyone planning to book a stay at this popular campground.
No specific promotional information was mentioned in the provided reviews. Typically, state park campgrounds may have fees associated with camping permits and possibly entrance to the park itself. These fees often vary based on the type of site (e.g., tent, RV), the length of stay, and residency status. To obtain information about current camping rates, park entrance fees, and any potential discounts or special offers, it is recommended to visit the official Itasca State Park website or contact the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) directly. Given the campground's popularity and the new reservation policy, it is also advisable to inquire about the booking window (mentioned as "120 days before" in one review) and the process for making reservations to secure a spot, especially during peak seasons.
For local users in the Shevlin, MN area, or those willing to travel, Pine Ridge Campground at Itasca State Park offers a highly desirable "camping near me" experience. The combination of a beautiful lakeside setting, recreational activities like biking and swimming, clean facilities, and friendly staff makes it a popular choice. The easy parking for campers and the availability of hammocking trees at some sites add to the appeal. However, it is essential to be aware of and adhere to the updated reservation policy regarding first-night check-in. Due to the campground's popularity, as indicated by it being "full" on a summer weekend, early booking (up to 120 days in advance) is strongly recommended to secure a desired spot. Potential visitors should consult the official Itasca State Park website or contact the DNR for detailed information on fees, reservations, and any current guidelines or regulations.
In conclusion, Pine Ridge Campground at Itasca State Park near Shevlin, MN, provides a beautiful and well-regarded "camping near me" option. Its idyllic environment, proximity to Lake Itasca and a scenic bike trail, clean facilities, and friendly staff contribute to a positive camping experience. However, prospective visitors must be diligent in understanding and adhering to the updated reservation policy, particularly regarding first-night check-in, to avoid losing their reservation. Pine Ridge Campground Reviews
Beautiful and idyllic. Summer weekend, 2024.Full campground but it didn't feel cramped. Short walk to the beach on Lake Itasca. There's a terrific 16 mile paved bike path around the lake. Be forewarned that there's some uphill/downhill, but nothing overly strenuous.Clean bathrooms. The lodging office sells ice and firewood, along with some simple snacks. The reservation rules have changed so make sure you read them on the website. The long and short of it is if you don't show up on the first night of your reservation you risk losing your entire stay. So no more gaming it by reserving thur-sun just so you can get the weekend and just not showing up on Thur.Don't forget to walk across the Mississippi at it's headwater.
Jul 29, 2024 · Michael SmithA nice campground at Itasca State Park. It was easy to park our camper and pur spot had great hammocking trees. Clean bathrooms, campground was busy and people were having fun, and DNR staff was very friendly. Make sure to get your spot right away (the 120 days before) cause this park is very popular.
Jul 31, 2024 · Marcus CorbinGreat campground right in the bike path. There is a small playground for kids. There is firewood available for purchase for $6 a bundle. Electric and non-electric sites available (20, 30 and 50 amp). Campsites are relatively level. Lots of mature red pine surrounding the campsites. There are a couple of downsides to the campground. First, there is only one dump station and it's only accessible by going to the Bear Paw campground (about a 5 minute drive). Second, some of the campsites get mildly flooded during rain. Third, there is water available for filling your RV, but it's not at each campsite.
Sep 05, 2020 · Mister JonGreat camp grounds, so much to do here, from the paved walking 🚶♀️ or biking trails. Or renting a pontoon or kayaks on this beautiful lake with no cabins on it. Walk or bike to the Mississippi head waters is a short distance from this camp grounds. 🏕
Jul 10, 2024 · Gary CouchLoved the park. Lots of activities going to the headwaters of the mississippi is very cool. Kayak $7/hr, pontoon boat $65/hr, and bike $27 first day 19 a day after, all rentals are very reasonable so you can explore the lake even if you did not bring anything with you with lots of public access as well. There is a drive all the way around the park with plenty of places to hike bike and kayak. The lake is very large with lots to see.Campsites are gravel so a bit dusty or muddy in rain. They are level and most manage to have trees separating many of them some don't further in the pine ridge campground. All I saw were back in sites in pine ridge. Water sites are harder to get in bear paw. Very short walk to rental area from pine ridge and 1.5mi from headwaters visitor center. We were able to get privacy was needed even in a fully packed campground. The single dump station for all the campgrounds is pretty limiting as are 2 water fill stations for RVs so plan accordingly but there is water all around the campground (not threaded connections every 4 sites). Firewood is $6 a bundle at camp host or entrance. Rangers are nice and helpful. Showers are nice, clean push button with occupancy sensors. Bathrooms were clean and vault toilets were available as well. Raccoons visited nightly but when left clean no issues with them. They warn of bears but their trash setup does not show them to be a problem. Sites are electric only or primitive.Wifi is available at showers and other places. Verizon coverage was limited. Sprint/TMO was there but sporadic, att had signal but was not usable for me.
