Lowland Campground and Picnic Area Introduce
Are you a local user in the Butte, Montana area seeking a secluded "camping near me" experience close to nature, with the soothing presence of a river? Lowland Campground and Picnic Area, located in Butte, MT 59701, USA, offers just that. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground boasts a great natural location with water and river access, coupled with a welcoming community of campers. While some aspects of the campground's maintenance and site layout have been noted as needing attention, its natural charm and the kindness of its occupants make it a noteworthy option for those looking to escape into a more rustic setting.
A Great Secluded Location Right Next to Nature
Lowland Campground and Picnic Area is praised for its "great secluded place," suggesting a camping experience that feels removed from the hustle and bustle of more developed campgrounds. This seclusion likely appeals to local users seeking a quieter and more intimate connection with nature. The campground's environment is characterized by its proximity to a river and the presence of water, enhancing the natural ambiance and providing opportunities for water-related activities, although specifics about these activities are not detailed in the reviews.
One reviewer explicitly states, "You’re right next to nature out here with no sign of bears," which could be reassuring for some campers concerned about wildlife encounters. This suggests a relatively safe environment in terms of large predators, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings with a bit more peace of mind. However, it's always wise to remain aware of local wildlife and take appropriate precautions.
The overall location is described as "great," indicating that it is likely easily accessible from Butte and offers a desirable natural setting for a camping getaway. The presence of a picnic area in its name also suggests that the campground caters to day visitors as well as overnight campers, providing a space for enjoying outdoor meals amidst nature.
Basic Services and a Welcoming Community
Lowland Campground and Picnic Area offers some basic services, but reviews highlight both the presence of water and the need for potential improvements in other areas:
- Water Access: One reviewer specifically mentions a "Wonderful campsite with water and a river," indicating that potable water is available at least at some sites. This is a significant convenience for campers.
- Pricing: The cost is mentioned as "15(or 17) for single spot, 30 for a “double spot”." This provides a clear indication of the budget-friendly pricing for individual and slightly larger campsites.
Beyond the basic amenities, a standout feature of Lowland Campground appears to be the welcoming and helpful nature of the staff and other campers. One reviewer shared a heartwarming experience of a motorcycle breakdown at the campsite, where "multiple people helped, fed us and one gentleman even drove my bike in his truck to Red Lodge." This exceptional display of kindness and community spirit speaks volumes about the type of people who frequent this campground, suggesting a supportive and friendly atmosphere.
Features: Seclusion, River Access, and Budget-Friendly Cost
The key features of Lowland Campground and Picnic Area, based on the available reviews, are:
- Secluded Location: Offers a more private and natural camping experience away from crowded areas.
- River Access: Provides the sights and sounds of a river, potentially offering opportunities for fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the riverside ambiance.
- Water Availability: At least some campsites have access to water, a significant convenience for campers.
- Budget-Friendly Pricing: With single spots costing around $15-$17 and double spots $30, it's an affordable option for local users.
- Friendly Community: The helpfulness and kindness of staff and other campers create a welcoming and supportive environment.
Areas for Potential Improvement and Considerations for Local Users
While the natural location and community spirit are strong positives, the reviews also point out some areas where Lowland Campground could benefit from maintenance and improvements:
- Site Levelness: One reviewer noted that the tent plots are "not quite level," which can affect the comfort of pitching a tent and sleeping.
- Site Overgrowth: Single spots are described as "overgrown with weeds" and lacking a "clean designated camping spot with no real level area." This suggests that some sites might require clearing and leveling to be more user-friendly.
- Group Spot Size: The "group spots" are mentioned as being "just as small as the single spots," with only space for one tent in the tent area on all the plots. This is misleading and could be problematic for larger groups expecting more space.
These points indicate that while the location has great potential, the actual campsites might require some effort from campers to find a suitable and comfortable setup. Local users who prefer meticulously maintained campgrounds might find these issues a drawback.

Lowland Campground and Picnic Area Reviews
Great secluded place. 15(or 17) for single spot, 30 for a “double spot”. The group spots are just as small as the single spots though, only space for one tent in the tent area on all the plots, not quite level. All the single spots are overgrown with weeds and didn’t seem to have a clean designated camping spot with no real level area. You’re right next to nature out here with no sign of bears. Great location, with a little maintenance it could be an A+ location, but I’ll give it an A if it’s empty, B when it’a busy.
Sep 06, 2024 · FreebirdWonderful campsite with water and a river. The staff and other campers were so nice and accommodating. I had a motorcycle break down at the campsite and multiple people helped, fed us and one gentleman even drove my bike in his truck to Red Lodge.
Jul 16, 2024 · Nick CutwayTucked away from the nearest major road, and far enough from the dirt road to access, Large mostly flat sites, was able to get 2 moderately sized tents in with plenty of space for cooking, fire and activity. First come first serve.Could not find a water spigot, so bring your own. There was no secured trash, so pack it out. There 'is' a vault for storage though at the front of the camp ground.
Jul 06, 2023 · AllenAwesome campground. Very low use and plenty of picnic benches. Three vault toilets that are clean. The view is gorgeous and any vehicle can drive out from Butte. Nice place.
Jul 30, 2021 · Jessica GreenNot great for tents as sites are all gravelled and have been compressed with RVs and caravans. All sites do have a fireplace and picnic table.
