Toll Mountain Campground and Picnic Area

Whitehall, MT 59759, USA

4.0
I would give 4 except for the cows that surround the perimeter of the campground and moo All. Night. Long. Clean out toilets. Sweet campsites. Well kept free camping. No water . There's a creek, but considering the cows are on either side of the campground we were afraid to boil the water. We had a 7 gallon jug that lasted 4 of us for 2 nights, 3 days and 15 miles of mountain biking each day. Grateful for campers next to us who were leaving and shared their extra water with us. So, be sure you have enough clean water. And enjoy the beauty and trails in the area. - Susan Sherman

Toll Mountain Campground and Picnic Area Introduce

If you're searching for "camping near me" and seeking a more rugged, off-the-grid experience in the Whitehall, Montana area, Toll Mountain Campground and Picnic Area, located in Whitehall, MT 59759, USA, presents a free camping option amidst a scenic environment. You can reach them at (406) 494-2147 or their mobile number +1 406-494-2147 for any inquiries, although it's important to note that this is likely for the managing entity (perhaps the forest service or local authority) and may not provide real-time information on campsite availability.

Based on the available reviews from fellow campers, Toll Mountain Campground offers a "great rustic camping area" that allows you to "getaway from it all." This suggests an environment focused on natural beauty and solitude, appealing to those seeking a more primitive camping experience away from developed campgrounds with extensive amenities. The mention of "sweet campsites" indicates that the individual camping spots themselves are appealing and well-situated within the natural landscape.

However, the reviews also highlight some significant limitations regarding services and amenities that potential visitors searching for "camping near me" should be aware of. Notably, the campground has "no water" available. While there is a creek present, one reviewer expressed concerns about its potability due to the presence of cows surrounding the perimeter of the campground. They noted, "There's a creek, but considering the cows are on either side of the campground we were afraid to boil the water." This lack of a reliable water source necessitates that campers must bring an adequate supply of their own. The reviewer mentioned bringing a 7-gallon jug for four people for two nights and three days, which highlights the importance of careful water planning, especially if engaging in strenuous activities like the 15 miles of mountain biking they undertook each day.

Another significant limitation is the availability of toilet facilities. The campground has "only 1 pit toilet," according to one reviewer. For a campground, especially one that may attract multiple groups, a single pit toilet may lead to inconvenience and potential sanitation concerns. The first reviewer also mentioned the need to "clean out toilets," suggesting that maintenance of the existing facility might be inconsistent or that self-maintenance might be expected to some extent.

Despite these limitations, the natural environment and recreational opportunities appear to be significant draws. The first reviewer mentioned "beauty and trails in the area," and the second highlighted it as a "great place to getaway from it all," implying a peaceful and scenic setting conducive to outdoor activities. The surrounding area likely offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking (as mentioned by a reviewer), and enjoying the natural landscapes of Montana.

Another crucial piece of information for those considering Toll Mountain Campground when searching for "camping near me" is the lack of cell service. One reviewer explicitly stated, "No cell service." This complete absence of cellular connectivity means that campers should be prepared for no digital communication with the outside world. This can be a benefit for those truly seeking an escape, but it also necessitates careful planning for safety and emergencies, as contacting help may be challenging.

Finally, campers at Toll Mountain Campground are responsible for managing their own waste. One reviewer noted, "You have to pack all your trash out." This "pack it in, pack it out" policy is common in more rustic or free camping areas and requires campers to bring their own trash bags and ensure they leave their campsite clean by removing all their garbage upon departure.

To summarize the key aspects of Toll Mountain Campground and Picnic Area for those considering "camping near me":

  • Free Camping: A significant advantage for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Rustic Environment: Appeals to those seeking a natural and less developed camping experience.
  • Scenic Beauty and Trails: Located in a potentially beautiful area with opportunities for hiking and mountain biking.
  • No Water Source: Campers must bring all their own potable water. A nearby creek may not be reliable or safe for drinking without proper treatment beyond boiling.
  • Limited Toilet Facilities: Only one pit toilet is available, which may be insufficient for the number of campers. Maintenance may be a concern.
  • No Cell Service: Be prepared for complete disconnection from cellular networks.
  • Pack It Out Trash Policy: Campers are responsible for removing all their own trash.
  • Potential Wildlife: The presence of cows surrounding the campground perimeter is noted, which could impact the environment and noise levels (mooing all night long, as mentioned by one reviewer). Campers should be aware of potential interactions with wildlife.

Given the detailed feedback, Toll Mountain Campground and Picnic Area offers a unique experience for those searching for "camping near me" who prioritize a free and rustic setting with access to nature and trails. However, potential visitors must be fully prepared for the lack of essential amenities like potable water and limited toilet facilities. The absence of cell service and the need to pack out all trash also require careful planning. The presence of cows near the campground is an additional factor to consider regarding potential noise and water source contamination.

As there is no information about specific promotional offers, local users interested in "camping near me" at Toll Mountain Campground should focus on being well-prepared for the conditions described in the reviews. The primary "promotion" is the availability of free camping in a potentially beautiful natural area. Ensure you have adequate water, a way to manage waste, and are comfortable with limited facilities and no cell service before choosing this location for your camping adventure.
