Boca Spring Campground

Stockrest Springs Rd, Truckee, CA 96161, USA

4.0
I camped here with a group of friends this past weekend. A solid spot with a good tree cover and clear underbrush. Most of the sites are slanted though, but we were able to find places to pitch tents without too much rolling. The picnic tables and fire rings were in good shape. There was a bear box or two on some sites, but most didn't appear to have them yet. We just put all our food and trash away in the car every night and had no issues. The trees helped the area stay cool and still let enough open sky through. The stars were beautiful and very visible every night as there was very little light pollution. There's a meadow next to the campsite that's a beautiful spot to take in the sunset and see the stars.I didn't have much interaction with the host, but there was some firewood. It's a heavy ATV area, so that was a background noise at times. Overall though, a great time and I already recommended it to a few friends because we were able to book last minute this summer. - Tevis Pieper

Boca Spring Campground Introduce

Boca Spring Campground, nestled in the picturesque Tahoe National Forest at Stockrest Springs Rd, Truckee, CA 96161, USA, is a popular destination for those seeking an authentic outdoor experience. As a prime option under the "Camping Near Me" category, this campground provides a more rustic and natural setting compared to highly developed RV parks, making it ideal for tent campers and those with smaller RVs or trailers looking to immerse themselves in nature. The campground can be reached at (530) 265-4531 or +1 530-265-4531 for inquiries, though booking is primarily done through recreation.gov.

The environment of Boca Spring Campground is characterized by a "heavily forested stand of towering pine and fir trees," providing excellent "tree cover" that helps keep the area cool, even during warmer months. This natural canopy still allows for "enough open sky through," leading to "beautiful and very visible" stars at night due to "very little light pollution." A significant and beloved natural feature of the campground is the "natural spring water coming out of the earth," which is described as tasting "so fresh and cold!" Adjacent to the campsite, there's a "meadow that's a beautiful spot to take in the sunset and see the stars," enhancing the scenic appeal of the location. While some sites are noted as "slanted," campers report being able to find suitable places to pitch tents without too much difficulty. The "clear underbrush" contributes to a clean and safe environment within the camping areas.

Boca Spring Campground is strategically located approximately one mile east of Boca Reservoir, a significant draw for visitors. The reservoir is a hub for water-based recreational activities, including boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing. A boat ramp is conveniently located near Boca Campground on the southwest end of the reservoir. The Little Truckee River is also nearby, renowned for some of Northern California's best catch-and-release fly-fishing. The surrounding Tahoe National Forest offers a vast network of opportunities for various land-based activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, and extensive off-road vehicle (OHV) trails. While the campground is an "heavy ATV area," which can be a "background noise at times," OHVs are generally restricted to entering and exiting the facility, with recreational riding limited to designated trails outside the campground. This suggests an effort to balance various recreational interests while maintaining the peace within the camping area. The campground is generally open from late spring (around May 24th) to early fall (around October 14th), with operating dates dependent on weather conditions, especially snowfall.

In terms of services and features, Boca Spring Campground offers single-family campsites, and also features one group site capable of accommodating up to 25 people and eight vehicles, making it suitable for both individual trips and larger gatherings. Each campsite is "equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill," providing essential amenities for cooking and gathering. While not all sites appear to have them yet, some are equipped with "bear box or two," encouraging safe food storage to prevent wildlife encounters. Vault toilets are provided, offering basic restroom facilities, and "potable water" is available, which is a crucial amenity for campers. It's noted that electrical hookups and showers are typically not available, classifying it as a more rustic campground where campers should be prepared to bring their own supplies for such luxuries. The cost per site is generally around $20 per night, with an additional $5 for an extra vehicle, and the group site costs $66.00 per night. Reservations are possible via recreation.gov up to six months in advance, though some sites may also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The presence of a camp host is often noted, suggesting on-site assistance and management, though specific interaction levels can vary. Firewood is also available, according to some reviews.

Promotional information for Boca Spring Campground highlights its natural beauty, affordability, and the abundance of recreational activities available both within and immediately around the campground. Reviews often emphasize the positive aspects, such as the "solid spot with a good tree cover," the "beautiful stars," and the refreshing "natural spring water." The ability to book "last minute this summer," as mentioned by a recent camper, can be a significant draw for spontaneous trips, though popular weekends may require booking well in advance. The campground is promoted as a great base for exploring the diverse outdoor offerings of the Tahoe National Forest, including biking, boating, fishing (especially in the North Fork of the American Wild River, a designated wild trout stream), hiking (with over 500 miles of trails, including the Pacific Crest Trail), horseback riding, paddling, wind sports, off-roading, and climbing opportunities in nearby areas like Donner Summer. Proximity to Truckee (20 minutes away) means campers have access to restaurants, grocery stores, and other amenities of a year-round recreational mountain town, providing a convenient balance between wilderness and comfort. The campground's popularity and positive word-of-mouth (e.g., "already recommended it to a few friends") further serve as strong promotional indicators for those searching for a fulfilling "Camping Near Me" experience.
