While one reviewer mentioned not staying directly at a canoeing area but swimming there, the overall feedback paints a picture of a beautiful and expansive region with various camping options, recreational activities, and unique local attractions. If you're looking for a place where you can camp for free, ride ATVs, explore hidden gems, and enjoy a stunning lake environment, Delmoe Campground and its surrounding area might be the perfect destination for your next local adventure. Let's delve into the environment, features, and recreational possibilities based on the experiences shared by fellow explorers.
The environment surrounding Delmoe Campground is clearly a major highlight, with reviewers describing it as "beautiful." The drive up to the lake itself is noted to be scenic, with one visitor commenting, "It is a beautiful drive up to the lake." This suggests that the journey to the campground is part of the overall enjoyable experience, offering picturesque views of the Montana landscape. The roads leading to the area are reported as "not too rough," indicating that access is generally manageable for most vehicles, although it's always wise to exercise caution on unpaved or less-maintained roads.
One of the most appealing aspects for budget-conscious campers searching for "camping near me" is the availability of "free spot" for camping. One reviewer explicitly mentioned camping in a free spot and described it as "amazing." This suggests that dispersed or primitive camping might be permitted in certain areas around Delmoe Campground, offering a cost-effective way to enjoy the outdoors. However, it's crucial for those opting for free camping to be aware of and adhere to Leave No Trace principles, ensuring they leave their campsite clean and minimize their impact on the environment. It's also advisable to check local regulations regarding dispersed camping to ensure compliance.
Delmoe Campground and the surrounding area appear to be a haven for ATV enthusiasts. One reviewer enthusiastically mentioned, "Rode atvs and there's a lot of hidden gems to find." This indicates that there are ample opportunities for off-road vehicle adventures in the area, with trails and terrain suitable for ATV riding. For local ATV owners looking for exciting places to ride near Butte, Delmoe Campground could serve as a great basecamp for exploring the backcountry and discovering these "hidden gems." It's important to be aware of and follow all local rules and regulations regarding ATV use, including designated trails and safety guidelines.
The "hidden gems" mentioned by the ATV rider add an element of exploration and discovery to the Delmoe Campground experience. These include "the ringing rocks, old abandoned cabins and mines, and free roaming cows!" The ringing rocks are a geological curiosity where certain rocks, when struck, produce a metallic ringing sound. Exploring these unique formations can be a fascinating and unusual activity. The presence of old abandoned cabins and mines offers a glimpse into the area's history, providing opportunities for historical exploration and photography (while always being mindful of safety when approaching old structures). The "free roaming cows" add a touch of rural Montana charm to the landscape, though it's important to observe them from a safe distance and avoid any interaction.
The presence of a lake further enhances the recreational opportunities at Delmoe Campground. One reviewer noted, "The lake itself also has picnic and camping areas as well as a boat dock." This indicates that the lake is a central feature of the area, offering designated picnic spots for day-use visitors and additional established camping areas beyond the free spots mentioned. The presence of a boat dock suggests opportunities for boating, fishing, and other water-based activities on the lake. For local users interested in lake camping or spending a day by the water, Delmoe Campground provides these facilities.
In addition to ATV riding and lake activities, the area around Delmoe Campground also offers "Lots of places to camp/RV bbq or explore the trails." This confirms that both tent camping and RV camping are accommodated in the area, likely at designated campgrounds around the lake. The mention of "bbq" suggests that picnic areas are equipped with grills for outdoor cooking. The availability of trails indicates opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the region on foot. These trails likely vary in difficulty and length, offering options for different fitness levels and preferences.
While one reviewer mentioned not staying at a "canoeing" area but swimming there, this implies that there might be specific sections of the lake or nearby waterways suitable for canoeing. The fact that swimming is also enjoyed suggests that the lake offers opportunities for water recreation beyond boating and fishing.

May 28, 2022 · MichaelI love this place you can bring your four-wheelers to bring your family to bring your girlfriend you could bring your mistress fishing pole would have you go swimming look for nice gemstones or just cook some hot dogs over the fire.
Oct 09, 2022 · Rick ScarboroughGreat place. Lots of trees. Lots of room between camping spots. Many OHV trails in the area. Only bummer was that there was some garbage that was left behind from others.
Jun 17, 2018 · Rob MOMG the road to get here is hell. I have an F150 2w pulling a 20ft camper. I got 1 mile from the lake and turned around and headed back to Butte. I would never advise going back here without 4 wheel drive or just to tent camp. I read that the road was good. Not for my truck.
