Piney Creek Horse Camp Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Kennard, Texas area? Piney Creek Horse Camp, located at Srv Rd 566, Kennard, TX 75847, presents an option for local campers seeking a natural retreat. While primarily known as a horse camp, its beautiful open spaces and tall pine trees may appeal to a wider range of outdoor enthusiasts. Let's delve into what local users can expect based on the available information, including its environment, services, features, and important considerations highlighted by recent visitors.
Environment and Location:
Piney Creek Horse Camp is situated in a location characterized by "beautiful open spaces" and an abundance of "tall pines." This description paints a picture of a scenic environment, likely offering ample shade and a classic East Texas woodland feel. The open spaces could be ideal for setting up camp and enjoying outdoor activities, while the tall pines contribute to a tranquil and picturesque setting. The mention of it being "perfect for stargazing" suggests minimal light pollution, offering local astronomers and those who appreciate night skies a potential advantage.
The camp's address places it near Kennard, Texas, which is located within the general vicinity of the Davy Crockett National Forest. This proximity suggests that the surrounding area is rich in natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation beyond just the campground itself. Local users from Kennard and nearby towns and cities within East Texas can consider this as a potentially accessible camping destination.
Services and Amenities:
Based on recent customer reviews, the services and amenities at Piney Creek Horse Camp appear to be somewhat basic and potentially require improvement in terms of clarity and maintenance. One reviewer noted the presence of an "outside bathroom along the way," but it's unclear whether this facility is officially part of the campground or its condition. This suggests that campers should not rely on dedicated restroom facilities within the camping area itself and should be prepared accordingly.
The mention of a "self pay" station indicates that there is a fee for camping, with the reviewer citing a $10 charge. However, a significant issue raised is the lack of usable envelopes at the self-pay station, as they were reported to be "weather damaged." This creates uncertainty about the payment process and might deter some local users from paying, as the reviewer also expressed hesitation about putting cash into a box in a remote location without a proper system. This is a crucial point for potential campers to be aware of – the payment system may be unreliable.
The absence of a clear map and confusing directions are also significant drawbacks highlighted in the reviews. One user reported that Google Maps led them to "the middle of a road," and the identifying signs for the camp were only visible further down, causing initial confusion about the location. This lack of clear signage and navigational information could be a major frustration for local campers trying to find the campground, especially for the first time.
Features and Suitability:
Despite the challenges with wayfinding and payment, the inherent features of Piney Creek Horse Camp, such as the "beautiful open spaces" and "tall pines," offer a natural appeal. The open areas would likely be suitable for setting up tents and enjoying outdoor activities. The shade provided by the pine trees could be particularly welcome during the warmer months in Texas. The positive review mentioning its suitability for a "weekend camping" trip and "perfect for star gazing" underscores the potential for a pleasant natural experience.
Given the name "Piney Creek Horse Camp," it is highly likely that the campground is specifically designed to accommodate campers with horses. This might include features such as hitching posts, water troughs for horses, and potentially trails suitable for horseback riding in the surrounding area. For local equestrians looking for a "camping near me" option that caters to their needs, Piney Creek Horse Camp could be a viable choice, assuming the horse-related facilities are in good condition and the trails are accessible.
However, the positive review from a non-equestrian camper suggests that the camp is not exclusively for horse owners and can be enjoyed by anyone seeking a natural camping experience. The open spaces and natural beauty are likely the primary draws for general campers.
Promotional Information for Local Users:
For local residents in and around Kennard, Texas, Piney Creek Horse Camp offers a chance to immerse yourselves in the beauty of East Texas with its expansive open areas and towering pine trees. Imagine a weekend getaway spent under the shade of these majestic pines, with ample space to relax and enjoy the tranquility of nature. As one visitor noted, the clear night skies make it an ideal spot for stargazing, offering a celestial spectacle away from city lights.
If you are a horse owner in the region looking for a "camping near me" destination that accommodates your equine companions, Piney Creek Horse Camp is specifically geared towards your needs. You can enjoy riding the trails (assuming they are well-maintained and accessible) and have a dedicated space to camp with your horses.
For general campers who appreciate a natural setting and don't require extensive amenities, Piney Creek Horse Camp provides a rustic option. The open spaces are perfect for setting up camp, enjoying outdoor meals, and simply unwinding in nature. The potential for wildlife viewing in the surrounding area adds another layer of appeal for nature lovers.
Important Considerations Based on Reviews:
- Wayfinding: Be aware that the location might be difficult to find based on online maps and that signage may be inadequate. It might be helpful to contact the provided phone number for more precise directions before your trip.
- Payment: The self-pay system appears to have issues with damaged envelopes. Consider bringing a waterproof envelope or being prepared for potential difficulties in paying the $10 fee. The reviewer's hesitation about the security of the payment box is also worth noting.
- Restroom Facilities: Do not rely on the "outside bathroom along the way" as a guaranteed or well-maintained facility within the campground itself. Be prepared with your own sanitation arrangements if necessary.
- Limited Amenities: Expect a basic camping experience with minimal to no developed amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, or potable water.
- Horse Camp Focus: While open to all campers, be mindful that the primary focus might be on accommodating horses and their owners.

Given the potential challenges with finding the location and the payment system, it is highly recommended that local users contact Piney Creek Horse Camp directly before planning a trip. Piney Creek Horse Camp Reviews
a map is sorely lacking. the spot google maps took me to is just the middle of a road. the only signs that identify the place is down from there but for the longest time you don't know if you are even there.there is an outside bathroom along the way, don't know if it's part of the camping grounds or notthere is also a "self pay" station way back from the road, but there are no useful envelopes in the box, they're all weather damagednot sure i want to stick ten bucks into a box in the boonies anyway
Jan 25, 2025 · DBDBeautiful open spaces, with tall pines everywhere perfect for a weeken camping perfect for star gazing 💫🦊🦉🌼
Dec 28, 2020 · Omar FloresNot a bad spot for a last minute camp site. It’s not perfect but it does the trick. We have the whole place to ourselves. So it’s not a busy spot. We came here because Ratcliff was closed and it’s not far from it. Has bathrooms, running water and leveled camp spots.
Apr 10, 2021 · Jeep_Recon_USA 1Plenty of space to park the RV and the stores are fairly flat. There are several water faucets and an outhouse style toilet. The road back there is in pretty good condition. It's beautiful and quiet with plenty of trails.
