Rock Creek Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in Iowa, Rock Creek Campground, located at 5451 Rock Creek W St, Kellogg, IA 50135, USA, presents itself as a destination with a range of advertised features. Based on available online reviews, the campground offers certain appealing amenities, but it's also crucial to acknowledge and consider significant negative feedback regarding environmental conditions.
According to one positive review, Rock Creek Campground is described as "one if the best camping sites in Iowa." This enthusiastic assessment highlights several attractive aspects. The presence of a beach suggests opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the waterfront. The inclusion of a marina indicates potential access to water activities, with the reviewer specifically mentioning "noat rentals," implying the availability of boats for use on the water. This would be a significant draw for those interested in boating, fishing, or simply exploring the lake.
Furthermore, the positive review notes the availability of practical amenities such as "fire wood" and "bait," catering to campers who enjoy campfires and fishing. The mention of "tons kf beautiful wildlife to see herre" suggests that the campground is situated in an area rich in natural beauty, offering opportunities for wildlife observation and photography. The reviewer explicitly advises visitors to "dont forget the camera," emphasizing the potential for memorable encounters with local fauna.
Another commendable aspect highlighted in the positive review is the cleanliness of the facilities. The reviewer specifically mentions the "cleanest showers and restrooms all private," which is a significant factor for camper comfort and hygiene. Private restrooms and clean shower facilities can greatly enhance the overall camping experience, providing a sense of comfort and convenience.
However, a starkly contrasting review presents a very different perspective on Rock Creek Campground. This reviewer expresses extreme dissatisfaction, stating, "I wish I could give 0 stars." The central issue raised is the "sheer amount of flies" at the campsite, which the reviewer characterizes as a "massive environmental disaster waiting to happen." This is a severe accusation, suggesting a potentially significant nuisance and health concern for campers.
The negative review goes on to speculate about potential health impacts, suggesting that "local hospitals have taken people in with issues caused by the huge population of disease carrying flies at this campground." While this is speculation, it underscores the seriousness of the reviewer's concern regarding the fly infestation. The reviewer expresses astonishment that "so many people actually camp here," indicating a personal experience of severe discomfort due to the flies.
The reviewer's personal experience led them to leave the campground after only three hours, seeking an alternative location ten miles away where no fly issue was present. This action strongly suggests that the fly infestation was significant enough to render the campsite uninhabitable for this individual. The reviewer urges others to "Seek the alternative if you don't wish to become ill," further emphasizing the potential health risks perceived.
Adding to the severity of the concerns, the negative review mentions contacting the county about the issue but receiving no satisfactory response. The reviewer also claims that "even the sole employee I was able to contact at this campground became defensive and uppity" when the fly issue was raised. This suggests a lack of acknowledgment or willingness to address the problem on the part of the campground staff, according to this particular account.
The negative review further speculates about the potential source of the fly infestation, suggesting that "it is highly likely that fecal matter is seeping into the ground from their pit toilets and tainting the lake." This is a serious accusation with potential implications for water quality and public health. Based on this concern, the reviewer advises against fishing at the lake if the intention is to consume the catch.
The reviewer concludes by strongly recommending alternative campgrounds nearby, stating, "There are 2 alternative campgrounds nearby and I cannot stress enough that out should seek these alternatives if you value your health, or the health of your family and pets that you plan to bring along." The final assessment is that "This campground is not currently suitable for human occupation," a very strong and negative indictment of the conditions experienced.
Considering these contrasting reviews, local users searching for "camping near me" should approach Rock Creek Campground with caution and conduct further inquiry before making a reservation. While the positive review highlights appealing amenities such as a beach, marina with boat rentals, wildlife viewing opportunities, and clean facilities, the severe negative review regarding a significant fly infestation and potential sanitation issues cannot be ignored.
Prospective campers might want to seek more recent reviews or contact the campground directly to inquire about the current conditions, particularly concerning the fly situation. It would be prudent to ask about any measures the campground has taken to address this issue. Additionally, inquiring about the type of toilet facilities and the overall sanitation practices could help alleviate concerns raised in the negative review.
Given the conflicting information, it is difficult to provide a definitive assessment of Rock Creek Campground. While it seemingly offers attractive features for outdoor enthusiasts, the serious allegations of a severe fly infestation and potential sanitation problems raise significant red flags. Local users are advised to weigh the potential benefits against the reported drawbacks and to prioritize their health and comfort when considering this camping option. Exploring the mentioned alternative campgrounds nearby might also be a wise course of action until more information about the current conditions at Rock Creek Campground becomes available.
In conclusion, Rock Creek Campground in Kellogg, Iowa, presents a mixed picture based on the available online reviews. While it boasts amenities like a beach, marina, and opportunities for wildlife viewing, alongside reports of clean facilities, a critical review highlights a potentially severe and concerning issue with a massive fly infestation and possible sanitation problems. Local users searching for "camping near me" should carefully consider both perspectives and seek up-to-date information before deciding to camp at Rock Creek Campground. It is recommended to prioritize health and safety and explore alternative options if significant concerns remain unaddressed.

Nov 12, 2024 · Lindy WhalenI wish I could give 0 stars. The sheer amount of flies that this campsite has is a massive environmental disaster waiting to happen. I would guess that the local hospitals have taken people in with issues caused by the huge population of disease carrying flies at this campground. The fact that so many people actually camp here is astounding. I stayed for only 3 hours and moved into another campground 10 miles away and there's no flies there. Seek the alternative if you don't wish to become ill. The county doesn't care as I did contact them and even the sole employee I was able to contact at this campground became defensive and uppity after I brought up the issue. It is highly likely that fecal matter is seeping into the ground from their pit toilets and tainting the lake. I would not fish here if you're looking to consume what you catch. There are 2 alternative campgrounds nearby and I cannot stress enough that out should seek these alternatives if you value your health, or the health of your family and pets that you plan to bring along. This campground is not currently suitable for human occupation.
