Round Mountain Campground Introduce
Looking for a "camping near me" experience that truly immerses you in nature, offering peace, quiet, and a sense of backcountry remoteness? Round Mountain Campground, located near Del Rio, TN, presents itself as a unique option for those seeking a more primitive and secluded camping adventure. Situated at a higher elevation, this campground promises an escape from the heat and easy access to notable natural attractions like Max Patch and Lemon Gap. However, it's crucial to understand the nature of this "true backcountry car camping site" to ensure it aligns with your camping preferences and preparedness.
One recurring theme in the limited customer feedback is the emphasis on maintaining the natural integrity of the campground. One reviewer explicitly states, "Please clean up after yourself. Trash cans are literally within 30 yards of each site." This underscores the expectation of responsible camping practices and the availability of waste disposal facilities, albeit with an observation of "random litter," suggesting that not all visitors adhere strictly to this request. Despite this minor issue, the reviewer concludes that Round Mountain is their "new favorite campground," highlighting its positive attributes.
The primary draws for this reviewer appear to be the "plenty of space" available at the campsites and the fulfillment of their specific needs: "a peaceful and quiet place with high enough elevation to escape the heat." This suggests that Round Mountain offers a sense of spaciousness and tranquility, making it ideal for those seeking solitude and respite from warmer temperatures. The higher elevation is a significant environmental feature, potentially providing cooler and more comfortable camping conditions, especially during the summer months.
Furthermore, the location of Round Mountain Campground is noted for its proximity to popular hiking and scenic destinations. The reviewer mentions that it takes approximately "10 minutes to drive to Max Patch and about 5 minutes to Lemon Gap." Both Max Patch and Lemon Gap are well-known for their stunning panoramic views and access to the Appalachian Trail, making Round Mountain a convenient basecamp for hikers and nature enthusiasts looking to explore these iconic locations.
Regarding water sources, the reviewer mentions filtering water from the "campground streams through a charcoal filter." This indicates the presence of natural water sources within the campground area, but also highlights the need for campers to have their own water purification methods, as potable water may not be readily available. This is a characteristic of backcountry camping and requires appropriate gear and knowledge.
Another reviewer reinforces the "backcountry" nature of Round Mountain, describing it as a "nice little camp ground that is pack everything in and out." This is a fundamental aspect of backcountry camping – campers are responsible for bringing all their supplies and removing all their waste, leaving no trace behind. This ethos is crucial for preserving the natural environment and ensuring the sustainability of such sites.
In terms of facilities, the second reviewer mentions the presence of "vault potties" which are described as being "for the most part clean and in order." Vault toilets are non-flushing, pit-style toilets common in more primitive camping areas. The fact that they are generally clean is a positive aspect, indicating some level of maintenance. However, campers should be prepared for this type of basic sanitation facility.
A significant feature highlighted by the second reviewer, and likely a major draw for those seeking a true escape, is that Round Mountain Campground is "not typical busy" and "very peaceful." This reinforces the earlier reviewer's sentiment about the quiet atmosphere and suggests a less crowded camping experience compared to more developed campgrounds. For those prioritizing solitude and a connection with nature, this can be a considerable advantage.
Perhaps the most defining characteristic mentioned by the second reviewer is "no cell service!" While this might be a drawback for some who need to stay connected, it is a significant benefit for those looking to disconnect from technology and fully immerse themselves in the natural environment. The absence of cell service contributes to the feeling of remoteness and can enhance the peaceful and undisturbed experience of backcountry camping.
Based on the available information, the environment of Round Mountain Campground is characterized by its higher elevation, potentially cooler temperatures, natural streams (requiring filtration for drinking), and proximity to the scenic areas of Max Patch and Lemon Gap. It offers a spacious and tranquil setting conducive to a peaceful backcountry experience.
The services at Round Mountain Campground appear to be minimal, consistent with a backcountry car camping site. The presence of trash cans within 30 yards of each site indicates an effort to manage waste, although individual responsibility for cleanup is paramount. The availability of vault toilets provides basic sanitation. Campers should expect to be self-sufficient for most of their needs, including water, food, shelter, and navigation.
Key features of Round Mountain Campground include its backcountry car camping designation ("pack it in and out"), its peaceful and quiet atmosphere, its higher elevation providing a potential escape from heat, its proximity to Max Patch (approximately 10-minute drive) and Lemon Gap (approximately 5-minute drive), the presence of natural streams (requiring filtration), the availability of vault toilets (generally clean), and the absence of cell phone service, promoting a digital detox.

Its higher elevation, peaceful environment, proximity to Max Patch and Lemon Gap, and the absence of cell service make it an appealing destination for hikers, nature lovers, and those wishing to disconnect and immerse themselves in a more primitive setting. Round Mountain Campground Reviews
Please clean up after yourself. Trash cans are literally within 30 yards of each site. Other than the random litter, this is my new favorite campground. Plenty of space and everything I was looking for (which was mostly a peaceful and quiet place with high enough elevation to escape the heat). Takes about ~10 to drive to max patch and about 5 minutes to lemon gap. I filter my water from the campground streams through a charcoal filter. This is a true backcountry car camping site.

Jun 13, 2023 · Karen S HillMy wife and I spent 2 nights here in April and it was amazing! Toilets were super clean. Though there was no tap water, there was a small stream that we collected from. Overall, the campground was well maintained, quiet and just the right distance off the beaten path. We will definitely stay here again.
