Based on enthusiastic customer reviews, this campground offers a unique blend of rustic charm, family-friendly activities, and access to the natural beauty of the area, particularly its riverine environment. If you're looking for a place to reconnect with nature, enjoy river-based recreation, and create lasting family memories close to home, Shanklin's Ferry is definitely worth exploring.
One of the most compelling aspects of Shanklin's Ferry, as highlighted by a delighted first-time camper eager to return, is the overall experience it offers. The sentiment of "love this place" speaks volumes about the welcoming atmosphere and the memorable moments that visitors can expect. This initial positive impression suggests that Shanklin's Ferry has a certain charm and appeal that resonates strongly with those who choose to camp there.
Further elaborating on the campground's appeal, another reviewer aptly describes Shanklin's Ferry as "one of the best kept secrets in WV!" This designation implies that it might be a less crowded and more tranquil alternative to some of the more well-known camping destinations, offering a sense of discovery and exclusivity for local users. The review specifically points out that it is "great for family rustic camping," indicating that the campground provides an authentic outdoor experience suitable for all ages. The emphasis on "rustic" suggests that while the natural setting is prioritized, essential amenities are likely available to ensure a comfortable stay without excessive frills, allowing families to focus on enjoying the outdoors together.
A significant feature of Shanklin's Ferry is its direct access to the river, which offers a multitude of recreational opportunities. The review mentions "playing on the river," suggesting that the riverbanks or shallow areas are suitable for various family-friendly activities, such as wading, splashing, or simply enjoying the water's edge. This makes it an ideal spot for children to engage with nature in a safe and enjoyable way.
For angling enthusiasts, Shanklin's Ferry is lauded for its "great fishing for small mouth bass." This highlights the river as a prime location for local fishermen to cast their lines and potentially enjoy a rewarding catch. The presence of smallmouth bass suggests a healthy and vibrant river ecosystem, adding to the overall appeal for those who enjoy this particular type of fishing.
In addition to more active river pastimes, Shanklin's Ferry also caters to those seeking a more leisurely experience on the water. The review mentions the possibility of a "slow beginner river raft or kayak trip!" This indicates that the river conditions in the vicinity of the campground are conducive to gentle and safe paddling, making it accessible even for those new to rafting or kayaking. This opens up opportunities for scenic exploration of the river at a relaxed pace, allowing campers to fully appreciate the natural surroundings from a unique perspective.
Adding an element of potential wildlife viewing, the reviewer notes, "If you are lucky you might even get to see the eagles who nest here!" The presence of nesting eagles signifies a healthy and relatively undisturbed natural environment, and the chance to observe these magnificent birds in their natural habitat would undoubtedly be a memorable highlight for any camper. This feature underscores the ecological value of the area and the potential for unique wildlife encounters.
Based on the description, the environment surrounding Shanklin's Ferry is likely characterized by the scenic beauty of West Virginia, with the river playing a central role. The presence of nesting eagles suggests mature trees and a relatively pristine ecosystem along the riverbanks. The suitability for both active play and leisurely paddling indicates a diverse riverine environment with varying flows and accessible areas. The "rustic" camping likely implies a natural setting with perhaps wooded or open camping areas that emphasize the outdoor experience.
While the reviews do not explicitly detail the specific services and amenities offered at Shanklin's Ferry, we can infer some likely provisions based on the nature of a family-friendly rustic campground. These might include designated camping spots, access to potable water, restroom facilities (which, given the positive tone of the reviews, are likely well-maintained), and possibly picnic tables or fire rings at individual sites or common areas. The suitability for RVs is not mentioned, so it might primarily cater to tent campers or those with smaller camping setups that align with a more rustic experience. The mention of river access implies the potential for boat launching or landing areas.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the overwhelmingly positive sentiments expressed by the campers serve as a strong form of word-of-mouth promotion. The fact that a first-time camper is eager to return and another describes it as a "best kept secret" suggests a high level of satisfaction among those who have visited Shanklin's Ferry. For local users, this genuine enthusiasm from fellow outdoor enthusiasts can be more compelling than traditional advertising.
To get more specific information about the services, features, and any potential promotional offers at Shanklin's Ferry, local users would benefit from seeking out additional online resources or contacting local tourism boards in the Bozoo, WV area. Websites dedicated to West Virginia tourism or camping might provide further details, such as booking procedures, fees, specific amenities available (e.g., electric hookups, shower facilities, etc.), and any seasonal promotions. Given its "best kept secret" status, direct inquiries might be the most effective way to uncover all that Shanklin's Ferry has to offer for a memorable local camping experience.
In conclusion, Shanklin's Ferry appears to be a delightful and highly recommended "camping near me" destination for local residents in West Virginia. Its combination of rustic family camping, engaging river activities like playing and beginner-friendly kayaking/rafting, excellent smallmouth bass fishing, and the potential for eagle sightings creates a unique and appealing outdoor experience. Jul 13, 2018 · Amber Nicole MullinsTrying to find out information about this place was a dead end because the website and the phone number doesn't work, so I drove out here to take a look and it's still an active campground, nice big lots, very quiet, but no running water or electricity with camping toilets (not porta potties). Some people had campers but the road in is pretty rough so be wary.
