Good place to stop on the way to Mineral King hiking adventure. The mountain serpentine road to the campground will take you almost an hour to drive and is a bit tiring. Cold springs campground is a little further and more picturesque. At the time of our visit it was closed.Lots of firewood.Caution!!! Lots of trees are falling near by campground - Couch Buddhism

Atwell Mill Campground Introduce

For adventurers and nature enthusiasts seeking a truly secluded and authentic high-country experience within Sequoia National Park, Atwell Mill Campground offers a unique proposition. When searching for "Camping Near Me" with an emphasis on wilderness and challenging access, Atwell Mill, located on Mineral King Rd, Three Rivers, CA 93271, USA, stands out. This campground is primarily a basecamp for exploring the stunning Mineral King area, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and extensive hiking opportunities. As part of Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, specific direct phone numbers for the campground are not usually available. For inquiries, it's best to consult the official National Park Service website for Sequoia & Kings Canyon or contact the park directly.

Environment and The Mineral King Road

Atwell Mill Campground is situated along the East Fork of the Kaweah River, nestled within a once-logged sequoia grove, at an elevation of approximately 6,650 feet (2027m). The environment is characterized by a dense forest of cedar, fir, incense cedar, and pine trees, providing a sense of immersion in nature. The campground is praised for its "secluded and peaceful location," offering "spacious campsites ensuring privacy," which makes it less crowded than more popular campgrounds within the park. This tranquility is often attributed to the challenging access road.

The journey to Atwell Mill is a significant part of the experience, requiring careful planning and a robust vehicle. The Mineral King Road, a 25-mile (40 km) long, narrow, winding, and often unpaved mountain road, is notorious for its challenging terrain. It typically takes "almost an hour to drive" from the main highway turnoff and is described as "tiring" and "in bad shape" with deep ruts in places. This road is not advised for longer vehicles, and specifically, RVs and trailers are not permitted in the campground due to the nature of the road. Visitors should be aware of ongoing "major rehabilitation construction project for Mineral King Road" which began on April 1, 2024, and is planned through fall 2027. This project can cause "full roadway closures" and "lengthy traffic delays" on weekdays, though weekends generally have no closures. It's crucial to check the current road conditions and construction schedule on the National Park Service website before planning your trip.

Despite the challenging access, the "view is worth it" according to many. The remote setting means minimal to no cell service, allowing for a true escape from digital distractions. Wildlife, including black bears, coyotes, deer, and squirrels, are commonly sighted, reinforcing the wilderness experience. Visitors must be prepared for bear activity and utilize the provided bear-resistant food storage boxes. There have also been warnings about "lots of trees falling near by campground," indicating a need for caution and awareness of your surroundings.

Services and Primitive Features

Atwell Mill Campground is a primitive, tent-only campground with 21 sites, including one accessible option. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are generally not accepted, or are limited to group/ADA-compliant sites if available through Recreation.gov. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot. The campground typically operates from late May (usually the Friday before Memorial Day weekend) through October 31, depending on weather and road conditions.

Campsites at Atwell Mill are equipped with:

  • Picnic Tables: For outdoor dining and gathering.
  • Fire Rings with Grills: For campfires (subject to fire restrictions, which must be checked beforehand) and cooking. "Lots of firewood" is often available for gathering, but it's important to remember that chainsaws are not allowed, and fires must be completely extinguished (cold to the touch) before leaving or going to bed.
  • Bear-Resistant Food Storage Boxes: Each campsite has a metal bear box (47″ long x 17″ deep x 17-3/4″ high) for storing all food and scented items.

Regarding facilities, Atwell Mill Campground offers:

  • Vault Toilets: Basic, non-flush restrooms are available. There are no sinks or flush toilets, and showers are not available at the campground.
  • Potable Water: Water spigots are available, but it's important to note that water is typically turned off in mid-October. Visitors should also be prepared to bring their own water or filter water from the river, especially towards the end of the season or if unexpected issues arise. One reviewer specifically mentioned the "potable water tasted delicious!"

There are no hookups for RVs or trailers at Atwell Mill, reinforcing its primitive nature. Limited services are available at Silver City Resort, located 1.7 miles (3 km) east of the campground, which may offer a restaurant, gifts, limited supplies, and showers. More extensive services can be found in Three Rivers, approximately 23 miles (37 km) west, which is about a 1.5-hour drive due to the road conditions.

Activities and Promotional Information

Atwell Mill Campground is an ideal base for exploring the high country of Sequoia National Park:

  • Hiking and Backpacking: The Atwell-Hockett Trail begins directly at the campground, leading to numerous alpine lakes and over mountain passes in the stunning Golden Trout Wilderness. The campground is an excellent starting point for various wilderness hikes, offering breathtaking views and the chance for solitude.
  • Fishing: The East Fork of the Kaweah River, running alongside the campground, offers opportunities for fishing.
  • Nature Photography: The dramatic landscapes, giant sequoias, and abundant wildlife provide endless opportunities for photography.
  • Sequoia Groves: While the campground itself is in a once-logged sequoia grove, the broader Mineral King area is part of the Giant Sequoia National Monument, offering access to numerous magnificent sequoia groves for exploration.

The key appeal of Atwell Mill Campground is its tranquility and direct access to serious wilderness adventures. It's a "great place to stop on the way to Mineral King hiking adventure" and is less crowded than other campgrounds due to its "out of the way" location and the challenging drive. Visitors are strongly advised to "buy supplies before heading up" as services are very limited once on the Mineral King Road. For those prepared for a rustic experience and the adventurous drive, Atwell Mill promises an unforgettable immersion in the untouched beauty of the High Sierra.
