The Beautiful Natural Environment of Mio, Michigan
Mio, Michigan, is situated in the heart of the Huron National Forest, an area renowned for its scenic rivers, vast forests, and abundant wildlife. Au Sable Loop Campground benefits from this picturesque setting, offering campers a chance to connect with nature. One reviewer described it as a "beautiful area" perfect for relaxing. The campground's proximity to the Au Sable River likely provides opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and enjoying the riverside scenery. The quiet atmosphere, as noted by one first-time visitor who found it "perfect" and "very relaxing," suggests an escape from more crowded and developed campgrounds. For those seeking "camping near me" within a naturally beautiful and peaceful environment, Au Sable Loop Campground appears to be an excellent choice.
Services and Rustic Amenities
The reviews indicate that Au Sable Loop Campground offers basic, rustic amenities, aligning with a more traditional "camping near me" experience focused on the natural surroundings rather than extensive facilities:
- Vault Toilet: One reviewer mentioned the presence of a "vault toilet," which is a non-flush toilet facility common in more rustic campgrounds. This was sufficient for their needs.
- Hand-Pump for Water (Seasonal): There is a hand-pump for water available, but it's important to note, as one reviewer pointed out, that it gets unhooked when the temperature drops to freezing, so campers in the Fall should be aware of this and potentially bring their own water for all needs, including washing hands. Another reviewer explicitly stated to "just bring your own water to wash hands," reinforcing this.
- No Showers and No Power: It's explicitly mentioned that there are "no showers, no power" at the campground. This further emphasizes its rustic nature, appealing to those who prefer a more primitive camping experience.
- Clean Outhouse: Despite being a basic facility, one reviewer noted that the "outhouse was very clean," which is a significant plus for comfort and hygiene in a rustic setting.
- Large Campsites: One visitor appreciated that "our site was huge," suggesting that the campsites offer ample space and a sense of privacy.
These amenities cater to those looking for a more back-to-nature "camping near me" experience, where self-sufficiency and enjoying the natural environment are the priorities.
Features and Potential Activities
Au Sable Loop Campground's features and the surrounding area offer opportunities for several outdoor activities:
- Proximity to the Au Sable River: The name itself suggests its location near the Au Sable River, which is renowned for its canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.
- Hiking: Being in the Huron National Forest, there are likely numerous trails for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the area. The address including "Fed Trail 4366" might indicate proximity to federal forest trails.
- Relaxation: The quiet and serene atmosphere, as highlighted by one reviewer who had a "great time relaxing," makes it an ideal spot for those looking to unwind in nature.
A word of caution from one reviewer is to "watch out for ticks," as they encountered four while setting up their tent. This is a common concern in wooded areas, especially during warmer months, so campers should take appropriate precautions. The overall impression from the reviews is that Au Sable Loop Campground is a perfect getaway for those who appreciate a quiet, natural setting and are prepared for rustic camping.

Had a great time relaxing at the campsite. It's a beautiful area. When the temperature drops to freezing, they unhook the hand-pump for water; just keep that in mind if you're thinking about camping there in the Fall.Outhouse was very clean.
Oct 23, 2024 · Joshua HattMy first time here and it was perfect!! It was quiet, our site was huge and just very relaxing!! Only thing...watch out for ticks. I had 4 on me from setting up the tent. Other than that, just beautiful and serene. No showers, no power. There is a vault toilet...all I needed. Just bring your own water to wash hands. Cannot wait to go back!!
Jun 07, 2022 · Christy MCute, quiet little spot. We books site number 5 and we're very happy with it, but our site neighbors were literal drug addicts. My friend and I went to brush our teeth in the morning at the water pump and a woman came out of the bathroom with track marks and needles.Maybe don't bring the kids out here....
Jul 21, 2024 · Squilliam FancysonSweet spot on au sable river to access nice trout water. This is in Mio, MI not Cadillac. I don't know why it says it, can't figure how to correct it.
Jul 24, 2019 · eric nortanGreat little camping area, and pretty close to Mio. A couple of tips for first-timers... the water pump is a little tricky to find, look for it behind the trash containers. Also, avoid campsite 4 (middle site on the vault toilet side of the road) if there is even a hint of heavy rain during your stay, as it quickly becomes a lake.
