Backcountry Campsite #82

Robbinsville, NC 28771, USA

4.0
Its a great camp site. Yes, there are bears in the mountains and yes they are dangerous. You are responsible for your own safety while in bear country. Be smart, be prepared, and just expect it. Park Rangers are great, but they will not be there during a wildlife encounter. Your safety is your responsibility. If that is alarming to you, I would camp across the lake in the very nice campground (much less chance of encounter.) - Doug Jeffries

Backcountry Campsite #82 Introduce

For local adventurers seeking a more secluded and challenging outdoor experience under the category of "camping near me," Backcountry Campsite #82, situated near Robbinsville, NC, offers an opportunity to immerse oneself in the wilderness. Unlike developed campgrounds with readily available amenities, backcountry campsites like #82 necessitate self-sufficiency and a deep understanding of wilderness safety. Located within the expansive natural landscapes of western North Carolina, likely within or bordering the Nantahala National Forest or the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this campsite caters to those prepared for a more primitive and independent camping endeavor.

The provided address, Robbinsville, NC 28771, USA, places Backcountry Campsite #82 within a region renowned for its rugged beauty and abundant wildlife. The environment surrounding this campsite is expected to be characterized by dense forests, varied terrain which could include steep slopes, and potential proximity to water sources such as streams or rivers. Given its backcountry designation, the area will emphasize natural, undeveloped landscapes, offering a stark contrast to the managed environments of traditional campgrounds. Expect a setting where the sounds of nature dominate and encounters with wildlife are a distinct possibility.

As a backcountry campsite, Backcountry Campsite #82 offers virtually no services in the way of developed amenities. Campers should anticipate the absence of running water, electricity, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, or fire rings. All necessities, including shelter, food, water purification systems, cooking equipment, and waste disposal bags, must be brought in and carried out by the campers themselves, adhering strictly to Leave No Trace principles. This necessitates meticulous planning and packing to ensure all essential needs are met while minimizing environmental impact. The responsibility for personal comfort and sanitation rests entirely with the individual or group using the campsite.

The primary features of Backcountry Campsite #82 are its remoteness and the opportunity for an authentic wilderness experience. Access to the site likely involves hiking, potentially over challenging terrain and varying distances. The journey to and from the campsite becomes an integral part of the overall experience, appealing to those who enjoy backpacking and trekking. The natural environment itself is a significant feature, offering potential for wildlife observation, nature photography, and a profound sense of solitude. The specific characteristics of the area, such as unique geological formations, old-growth forests, or scenic overlooks, will depend on the precise location of Campsite #82 within the broader Robbinsville region.

The provided customer reviews offer crucial insights into the unique features and potential challenges of Backcountry Campsite #82. The recurring and emphatic mention of bears is a critical piece of information. One reviewer explicitly states, "Yes, there are bears in the mountains and yes they are dangerous... Bears are known to eat people here." This highlights a significant feature of the environment: it is active bear country. This necessitates a high level of awareness, preparedness, and adherence to strict bear safety protocols. Campers must be knowledgeable about proper food storage techniques (using bear canisters or hanging food properly), avoiding attracting bears, and understanding how to react in the event of an encounter. The reviewer underscores the personal responsibility for safety in such an environment, noting that "Your safety is your responsibility."

The review also offers a contrasting perspective by mentioning a "very nice campground (much less chance of encounter)" across the lake, suggesting that Backcountry Campsite #82 is located in a more remote area with a higher likelihood of wildlife encounters compared to more developed camping options nearby. This reinforces the distinction between backcountry and frontcountry camping and emphasizes the need for a different mindset and skillset for the former.

Despite the serious warning about bears, another reviewer mentions a "wonderful view" and notes that the map says it's "great for kids" with a thumbs-up emoji. This seemingly contradictory information could suggest that while the location offers scenic beauty and might be marked as suitable for families on a map, the inherent risks associated with bear country must be carefully considered, especially when camping with children. It underscores the importance of parental vigilance and a thorough understanding of the potential dangers before bringing children to a backcountry site in bear territory.

Given the nature of backcountry camping and the strong emphasis on wildlife safety, there is likely no promotional information or special offers for Backcountry Campsite #82. The appeal is to those seeking a genuine wilderness experience, accepting the inherent risks and responsibilities that come with it. Any fees associated with such a campsite would likely be related to permits required for backcountry access, which help manage and protect these natural areas.

In conclusion, for local users searching for "camping near me" and considering a backcountry experience, Backcountry Campsite #82 near Robbinsville, NC, offers a potentially rewarding but undeniably challenging opportunity. The environment is characterized by natural beauty and, significantly, the presence of a potentially dangerous bear population. Services are nonexistent, requiring complete self-sufficiency. The key features are remoteness, the likelihood of hiking access, and the immersion in a wild environment. The customer reviews serve as a critical warning about the need for extreme caution and preparedness regarding wildlife encounters. Prospective campers must prioritize safety, possess the necessary skills and equipment for backcountry travel and camping in bear country, and obtain all necessary permits and information from the relevant managing authorities before considering a stay at Backcountry Campsite #82.
