Baumgartner Campground

Mountain Home, ID 83647, USA

4.0
Large, well outfitted car campground. Abundant with RVs, kids on bikes and beautiful spots along the South Fork of the Boise River. We came here to see the concrete pool hot springs (good temp, full with families) and was pleasantly surprised by the well-thought out nature trail honoring the campground’s namesake who lived on the site (and died while trying to get back there after getting his mail in Featherville one winter). We were even more surprised by the plethora of large bull snake all around the property, almost stepping on a couple of 7-footers. If visiting Baumgartner, don’t forget to follow the road past the last campsite to a picture perfect swimming hole replete with fish and fisherman. A nice day trip if staying elsewhere along the South Fork of the Boise. - John Michael Schert

Baumgartner Campground Introduce

Are you searching for "camping near me" in the Mountain Home, Idaho area, seeking a campground that offers a blend of natural beauty, unique features like hot springs, and a family-friendly environment? Baumgartner Campground, located near Mountain Home, ID 83647, USA, along the South Fork of the Boise River, emerges as a compelling option based on the available customer reviews. This campground appears to offer a well-rounded camping experience with notable attractions, though potential visitors should also be aware of certain aspects highlighted by fellow campers.

Baumgartner Campground is described as a "large, well outfitted car campground" that is "abundant with RVs" and "kids on bikes," indicating a popular destination, particularly for families and RV enthusiasts. Its location along the South Fork of the Boise River suggests a picturesque environment with opportunities for riverside relaxation and potentially fishing or other water-related activities. The presence of "beautiful spots along the South Fork of the Boise River" further emphasizes the scenic appeal of the campground and its surroundings.

One of the standout features of Baumgartner Campground is its "concrete pool hot springs." This amenity is noted as having a "good temp" and being "full with families," highlighting its popularity as a recreational attraction within the campground. The hot springs pool offers a relaxing and enjoyable experience for campers of all ages. However, one reviewer explicitly mentions a "NO alcohol at the pool!!" policy, recounting an incident where non-campers brought alcohol to the pool, causing a disturbance that was addressed by the "active" camp host. This indicates that while the hot springs pool is a significant draw, it is managed with rules in place to ensure a family-friendly atmosphere.

Beyond the hot springs, Baumgartner Campground also boasts a "well-thought out nature trail honoring the campground’s namesake who lived on the site." This trail offers an opportunity for campers to explore the area's natural beauty and learn about the history connected to the campground, adding an educational and reflective dimension to the camping experience. The mention of the namesake who "died while trying to get back there after getting his mail in Featherville one winter" adds a poignant historical context to the site.

Another unique aspect of Baumgartner Campground is the presence of wildlife. One reviewer was "surprised by the plethora of large bull snake all around the property," even "almost stepping on a couple of 7-footers." This highlights the importance of being aware of the local fauna and taking necessary precautions while exploring the campground. While bull snakes are generally non-venomous, their size can be startling, and it's a reminder that the campground is located in a natural environment where wildlife encounters are possible.

For those looking for additional natural attractions, the reviewer recommends following the road past the last campsite to discover a "picture perfect swimming hole replete with fish and fisherman." This suggests a beautiful spot along the Boise River where campers can enjoy swimming and fishing, providing another recreational option within or very near the campground. The reviewer even notes that it's a "nice day trip if staying elsewhere along the South Fork of the Boise," indicating its appeal to visitors beyond those camping at Baumgartner.

In terms of general campground features and services, one reviewer described Baumgartner as a "nice, clean campground with active hosts." The presence of active hosts is a significant positive, as they can provide assistance, enforce rules (as seen with the alcohol incident at the pool), and contribute to a well-maintained and safe environment. However, this reviewer also noted that "the sites are a little small but have distance between each other" and that they are "just a little tight for larger trailers." This suggests that while there is spacing between campsites, those with very large RVs might find maneuvering or fitting into sites challenging.

Based on the reviews, key features and services at Baumgartner Campground appear to include:

  • **Hot Springs Pool:** A popular amenity for relaxation and family fun, with a no-alcohol policy.
  • **Nature Trail:** Offering a scenic walk and historical insights.
  • **Riverside Location:** Providing beautiful scenery and potential for water activities.
  • **Nearby Swimming Hole:** A picturesque spot for swimming and fishing.
  • **Active Camp Hosts:** Contributing to a clean and managed environment.
  • **Clean Campsites:** Well-maintained camping areas.

Potential visitors should also be aware of:

  • **Wildlife Encounters:** Including the presence of large bull snakes.
  • **Potentially Small Campsites:** Which might be a consideration for those with very large trailers.
