Elks Flat Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" within the scenic Boise National Forest near Mountain Home, Elks Flat Campground offers a generally quiet experience with spacious campsites and convenient access to Anderson Dam. While some aspects of the campground have received mixed reviews, its affordability and peaceful atmosphere may appeal to certain types of campers looking for a budget-friendly getaway in nature.
Quiet and Relatively Clean Environment
One of the consistently praised aspects of Elks Flat Campground is its overall quietness. This is a significant draw for campers seeking a peaceful retreat away from the noise of more crowded campgrounds or urban areas. One reviewer specifically noted it was "quiet overall," suggesting a tranquil environment conducive to relaxation and enjoying the natural surroundings. Additionally, the campground was described as "pretty clean" by one visitor, indicating that while there might be some areas needing attention, the general cleanliness is acceptable.
Spacious and Reasonably Priced Campsites
Elks Flat Campground offers campsites of varying sizes to accommodate different camping setups. A notable feature is the availability of "double sites" for $20 per night and "single sites" for $15 per night (as of the time of the review). The reviewer who mentioned this appreciated the size of the campsites, suggesting they are spacious enough to comfortably accommodate camping gear and potentially multiple tents or vehicles, depending on the site. The pricing also indicates an affordable option for those looking for budget-friendly "camping near me."
Basic Amenities at Each Site
Each campsite at Elks Flat Campground is equipped with some essential amenities for a comfortable basic camping experience. These include a "firepit with grill" for campfires and cooking, as well as a "picnic table" for dining and other outdoor activities. The presence of these standard features ensures that campers have the necessary infrastructure for a traditional camping experience.
Proximity to Anderson Dam
A significant advantage of Elks Flat Campground is its close proximity to Anderson Dam. This offers opportunities for various recreational activities associated with the reservoir, such as boating, fishing, and potentially swimming (depending on regulations and conditions). The nearby presence of Anderson Dam adds to the appeal of the campground for those looking to combine camping with water-based activities.
Potential Drawbacks: Shade, Cleanliness, and Facilities
While Elks Flat Campground has its positives, potential visitors should also be aware of some reported drawbacks. One reviewer mentioned "no shade at the spot we were," indicating that some campsites might lack adequate tree cover, which could be a concern during hot summer months. Another reviewer noted that "the grounds were pretty trampled down" and that "fire pits weren't cleaned out," suggesting that the overall maintenance and upkeep might be inconsistent. Furthermore, the same reviewer reported that "a restroom was out-of-order" and that "the water coming from the spigots wasn't clean." These issues highlight potential concerns regarding the condition and reliability of the campground's facilities. It is advisable for campers to come prepared with their own water and to be aware that restroom facilities might be limited or not fully functional.
Limited Cell Service
Connectivity can be a concern for some visitors, as one review explicitly states "no cell service with ATT until you get around the reservoir in certain areas." This indicates that cell phone service might be unreliable or completely unavailable within the campground itself. Campers who rely on mobile communication should be aware of this limitation and plan accordingly.
Meeting Nice Campers
Despite some of the noted drawbacks, one positive aspect mentioned by a reviewer was meeting "very nice campers." This suggests a friendly and community-oriented atmosphere within the campground, which can enhance the overall camping experience.

Elks Flat Campground Reviews
Except for no shade at the spot we were, great experience. Quiet overall and pretty clean. No cell service with ATT until you get around the reservoir in certain areas. Firepit with grill, picnic table. Site was pretty level.
Jul 10, 2023 · William PlumleyThe Baumgartner campground was closed so we backtracked and ended up at Elks Flat. What I liked was the size of the camp sites - double sites run $20 a night and the singles were $15. The grounds were pretty trampled down, fire pits weren't cleaned out, a restroom was out-of-order and the water coming from the spigots wasn't clean. Gotta say tho, it was quiet at night and we met some very nice campers and you're close to Anderson Dam.
Sep 30, 2020 · Jim ArmstrongWe had such a great time at this campground! It was well kept with lots of options for campsites. It's near the river and the bathrooms are clean and nice. All the campsites have a fire pit, picnic table, a surface for a propane stove and a clear place to pitch the tent.
Jun 08, 2022 · Heidi PurkettOur most favorite camping spot this year. Trying to keep it a secret too lol it's a group site, about $100 per night, but so very worth it!
Jul 02, 2021 · Anka TreefanWent here with a group of 50. Best time in a long time! Paved roads all the way up, and the campground was amazing! They have sand for tents. Hiking, fishing, boating, you name it! 10 miles from the store.
