Big Lake Campground Introduce
For local users in Wisconsin and the surrounding Midwest region seeking a "camping near me" experience immersed in the natural beauty of the Northwoods, Big Lake Campground near Presque Isle offers a compelling destination. Located at 6690 Co Rd P, Presque Isle, WI 54557, USA, this campground has garnered positive reviews highlighting its cleanliness, friendly staff, and stunning lakeside setting. While described as "more rustic," recent improvements and its proximity to various outdoor activities make it an attractive option for a range of campers. This introduction aims to provide a detailed overview of the environment, services, and features of Big Lake Campground based on the available customer feedback.
The environment surrounding Big Lake Campground is a significant draw, with reviewers consistently praising the beauty of the lake and the surrounding area. Situated in the heart of Vilas County, known for its abundant lakes and forests, Big Lake Campground offers a quintessential Northwoods experience. The lake itself is described as "absolutely BEAUTIFUL," suggesting clear waters and scenic shorelines perfect for relaxation and recreation. One reviewer specifically mentioned enjoying kayaking on the lake and witnessing "great sights including loons, bald eagles," indicating a rich ecosystem teeming with wildlife. Fishing is also a popular activity, with one guest reporting catching "a bunch of fish." For local users seeking "camping near me" with direct access to a pristine Wisconsin lake for swimming, boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing, Big Lake Campground appears to be an excellent choice. The recent removal of "a lot of trees" has made the campsites more open, potentially offering more sunlight and easier maneuvering for larger camping setups while still likely retaining a natural feel.
While Big Lake Campground is characterized as "more rustic," it still offers essential services to ensure a comfortable stay. One notable improvement is the recent remodeling of half of the bathrooms, which are now described as a "nice addition." Clean and well-maintained restroom facilities are crucial for any campground, and this upgrade suggests an ongoing commitment to guest comfort. The availability of specific campsite amenities such as electric hookups, water access, or sewer connections is not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, which reinforces the "rustic" nature of the campground. Campers should likely expect more basic services, potentially including shared water spigots and non-electric sites, although it would be prudent to confirm these details directly with the campground management. The campground is also reported to be "very clean and well kept," indicating a commitment to maintaining a pleasant environment for all visitors.
Several features of Big Lake Campground enhance its appeal to local users seeking "camping near me." Its proximity to the Vilas County bike trails is a significant advantage for cycling enthusiasts. Vilas County boasts an extensive network of paved and off-road bike trails that wind through the scenic Northwoods, offering opportunities for leisurely rides and more challenging adventures. The easy access from Big Lake Campground allows campers to combine their lakeside stay with exploration of the surrounding forests and lakes by bicycle. The campground's dog-friendly policy (though the beach is not) is another notable feature for pet owners who want to bring their furry companions along on their "camping near me" trip. Knowing that dogs are welcome at the campsites ensures that more members of the family can enjoy the outdoor experience. Additionally, the "extremely friendly and helpful" staff is consistently praised in the reviews. Positive interactions with campground staff can significantly enhance a camping trip, providing assistance, local information, and a welcoming atmosphere. One reviewer mentioned receiving "a ton of informative papers and pamphlets," suggesting that the staff goes above and beyond to ensure guests have the resources they need to explore the area.
The "rustic" nature of Big Lake Campground, while implying fewer modern amenities, can also be seen as a feature for those seeking a more traditional and nature-focused camping experience. The open campsites resulting from the tree removal might offer better opportunities for stargazing and enjoying the natural light. The focus appears to be on the beauty of the lake and the surrounding environment, encouraging activities like kayaking, fishing, and exploring the nearby bike trails rather than relying on extensive campground amenities. For local users who appreciate a quieter, more natural setting for their "camping near me" getaway, Big Lake Campground's rustic charm could be a major draw.

Big Lake Campground Reviews
This is a more rustic campground. They recently took down a lot of trees which makes the site much more open than previously. Half the Bathrooms are remodeled and nice addition.Close to the Vilas County bike trails.Campground is dog friendly but the Beach is not.
Aug 11, 2024 · Anna Zoromski-LindeWe loved this campground and are hoping to come back again! It was very clean and well kept. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful! We received a ton of informative papers and pamphlets which were great! The lake and area is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Highly recommended. We kayaked and saw great sights including loons, bald eagles, and caught a bunch of fish.
Jun 20, 2017 · KelsBairGreat campground despite what the previous reviewer posted. The campground has NOT been clearcut and there is plenty of privacy between campsites. While there has been some activity with removing trees in a few areas, it appears that more conifers have been planted in their place. Very clean restrooms and nice (but small) boat ramp. About the only thing I would suggest is to clear paths from lakefront campsites to the lake itself. I'll be back again!
Jun 21, 2024 · M KopfI USED to camp here 6-8 times a year. This spring some genius from Madison decided to Clear cut this campground..literally. It looks HORRIBLE- one of the great things (used to be) about this campground was the privacy..not anymore! You can stand at any point on the compass and see EVERY WHERE! They pushed a Logging Road in with big piles of logs stacked up and muddy roads. They should be ashamed of what they have done. Honestly folks go to another camp ground..if you rent a site it will look like you have a campsite in the middle of a clear cut. I was Here in mid May and its Atrocious! WAY TO GO DNR ..
Jun 02, 2024 · Miles ColemanNice campground. Campground host is very nice. Skeeters were horrible but it's just a bad hatch time. DNR reservation website is a joke. Can't reserve a site less than 3 days on holiday weekend even though half the sites are vacant
