Big Meadows Horse Camp Introduce
For those in the 'camping near me' category with an interest in equestrian activities and seeking a campground near Sisters, Oregon, Big Meadows Horse Camp, located on NF-2257, Sisters, OR 97759, offers a unique camping experience tailored to those traveling with horses. This campground is specifically designed to accommodate horses and their riders, providing facilities and access to trails suitable for horseback riding in the scenic surroundings of Central Oregon.
Recent feedback from a camper as of May 21, 2024, provides important information regarding the current accessibility and condition of Big Meadows Horse Camp. According to this review, while the gate to the campground was unlocked, the road leading to the camp was obstructed by two downed trees approximately a quarter of a mile from the site. Additionally, the reviewer noted the presence of "lots of snow" at that time, suggesting that early season access might be challenging and that the campground may not yet be fully ready for use. This information is crucial for potential visitors planning trips in the late spring or early summer, as it indicates potential physical barriers to reaching the campground.
The same review also pointed out that "Campsite 5 has part of the corrals down," indicating that some of the equestrian facilities within the campground may be in need of repair. This is a significant consideration for those bringing horses, as the availability and condition of corrals are essential for the safe and comfortable containment of livestock. The reviewer concluded that the "Campground needs some work to get ready for use this summer," suggesting that while the potential is there, the site may require maintenance and clearing before it is fully operational and safe for visitors.
Despite these early season challenges, another reviewer shared positive aspects of Big Meadows Horse Camp, indicating that the campsites are "Roomy" and offer "Easy to back in a trailer." This is particularly beneficial for those traveling with horse trailers, which can often be large and difficult to maneuver in tighter spaces. The spaciousness of the campsites suggests a comfortable and less crowded camping experience.
This reviewer also highlighted the proximity of a "Trail close by," which is a key feature for an equestrian campground, offering direct access to riding opportunities in the surrounding area. The presence of nearby trails allows riders to explore the natural beauty of the region on horseback without the need for extensive transportation of their animals. The type and difficulty of these trails are not specified, but the mere presence is a significant advantage for horse enthusiasts.
Regarding water facilities, the reviewer mentioned a "Water 💧 pump was more work than I expected." This suggests that while water is available at the campground, the method of obtaining it might require more physical effort than some campers might anticipate. It is advisable for visitors to be prepared for a manual water pumping system if this is the primary source of water at the campground.
A notable feature specifically for equestrian campers is that "Each site had room for 6 horses." This indicates that Big Meadows Horse Camp is well-equipped to handle groups traveling with multiple horses, providing ample space for tethering or utilizing portable corrals in addition to any permanent corral structures available at individual sites (like the one mentioned as being partially down at campsite 5).
The environment surrounding Big Meadows Horse Camp in the Sisters, Oregon area is likely characterized by the natural beauty of the Deschutes National Forest, which encompasses much of this region. This could include pine forests, mountain meadows, and potentially access to rivers or streams. The elevation might also suggest cooler temperatures, especially in the early and late seasons. The specific flora and fauna of the area would be typical of the Central Oregon Cascades.
Given that this is a horse camp, the primary services and features are geared towards accommodating equestrian needs. These typically include hitching posts or corrals for horses, ample space for horse trailers and parking, and access to trails suitable for riding. While the availability of other amenities such as restrooms, fire pits, picnic tables, and trash disposal is not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, these are common in developed campgrounds within national forests. The comment about the water pump suggests the presence of a water source, but the nature of restroom facilities (e.g., vault toilets, flush toilets) is not indicated.

As of 5/21/24 gate is unlocked but the road about 1/4 mile from camp us blocked by 2 downed trees and there's still lots of snow. Campsite 5 has part of the corrals down. Campground needs some work to get ready for use this summer.

Sep 15, 2024 · Martin RayThe trails from camp to Duffy lake are super scary very narrow hard to maneuver and could be dangerous. Go to the trail head to get the lake not the trails from camp.
Jul 21, 2023 · Lisa ZollingerPretty nice looking horse camp. 8 or 9 sites, pit toilets, nearby trails. Looks like each site has it's own coral.
Jul 09, 2022 · David SmeethRoom for plenty of horses. Space for tent and trailer camping. Water can be sourced from the creek that runs right next to the camp. Access to the Meadows and lakes nearby.
