Bobcat Campground Introduce
For local residents in and around Watersmeet, Michigan, seeking an exceptionally tranquil and secluded camping experience under the 'camping near me' category, Bobcat Campground, located in Watersmeet, MI 49969, USA, presents a unique opportunity. Reviews from fellow campers consistently emphasize the beauty and solitude of this location on High Lake. While acknowledging the presence of insects typical of the north woods, particularly during portages, the overwhelming sentiment is one of peaceful immersion in a beautiful and spacious natural setting. For local users prioritizing privacy and a wilderness experience, Bobcat Campground offers a potentially unmatched escape.
The Environment: Beautiful, Peaceful, and Exceptionally Secluded on High Lake:
The environment of Bobcat Campground is its primary allure. Situated on High Lake, it is described as a "Beautiful area and a really nice campsite." The key characteristic highlighted by multiple reviewers is the profound sense of peace and solitude. One camper noted, "Very peaceful," and another elaborated on the exceptional privacy, stating, "There is only one other campsite on High Lake and we did see a canoe in the woods at that site as we paddled by looking for our own site, but beyond that, we never saw or heard another person. It was perfect solitude." This suggests a very low density of campsites on High Lake, offering a truly remote feel.
The surrounding environment is typical of the north woods, likely featuring dense forests, clear lake waters, and a natural, undisturbed landscape. The fact that the beauty of the area surpasses what pictures can convey ("The pictures don’t do it justice") suggests a visually stunning and immersive natural setting that local users who appreciate wilderness will find particularly appealing. The spaciousness of the campsite itself ("Very spacious and pleasant site") adds to the comfort and sense of being truly in nature without feeling confined.
However, the reviews also provide an important aspect of the environment to be aware of: insects. One reviewer explicitly states, "Yes, the bugs are crazy," particularly emphasizing the intense insect activity during the portage from Crooked Lake to High Lake, describing it as "like something out of a horror movie." While the campsite itself is noted as having a "typical amount of mosquitos that you’d expect in the north woods," the portage experience underscores the need for preparedness regarding insects in this environment. This is a crucial consideration for local users planning a trip to Bobcat Campground.
Services and Amenities: Likely Primitive, Emphasizing Wilderness Experience:
Given the remote and secluded nature of Bobcat Campground, it is highly probable that the services and amenities are primitive, focusing on providing a basic wilderness camping experience rather than developed facilities. The reviews do not mention any typical campground amenities such as restrooms, showers, picnic tables, fire pits, or utility hookups. The emphasis is clearly on the natural environment and the solitude it offers.
- Secluded Campsite on High Lake: The primary "amenity" is the private and spacious campsite itself, offering direct access to High Lake.
- Potential for Water Access: Being on High Lake implies access for swimming, paddling (canoeing, kayaking), and possibly fishing, although specific details are not provided. The review mentioning paddling to find the site suggests that watercraft are a likely means of accessing and enjoying the lake.
The lack of mention of standard campground facilities suggests that local users should expect a more self-sufficient camping experience, requiring them to bring their own supplies and be prepared for a wilderness setting. The reference to a portage from Crooked Lake to High Lake indicates that accessing Bobcat Campground might involve some level of backcountry travel, further reinforcing the primitive nature of the site.
Features and Potential Highlights for Local Users:
Bobcat Campground offers several unique features that would appeal to a specific type of local camper:
- Exceptional Solitude and Privacy: For those seeking a true escape from crowds and noise, the near-guaranteed solitude on High Lake is a major draw.
- Direct Access to a Beautiful Lake: The lakeside location provides immediate opportunities for enjoying the water, whether for recreation or simply the peaceful ambiance.
- Spacious and Pleasant Campsite: The generous size of the campsite enhances comfort and the feeling of being immersed in nature.
- Pristine Natural Environment: The beauty of the area, which surpasses photographs, promises a rewarding experience for nature lovers.
- Potential for Wildlife Encounters: The remote north woods setting likely offers opportunities to observe local wildlife.
- Opportunity for Paddling and Exploration: The mention of paddling to find the site and the portage from another lake suggest that canoeing or kayaking are integral to the Bobcat Campground experience.
Local users who value privacy, natural beauty, and a more adventurous camping style will find Bobcat Campground to be a potentially ideal destination.
Important Considerations for Local Users: Insect Preparedness:
The reviews strongly emphasize the need to be prepared for insects. The portage from Crooked Lake to High Lake is described as having extreme bug activity, and even the campsite itself has a "typical amount of mosquitos." Local users planning to visit Bobcat Campground should take the following precautions:
- Load up on Bug Spray: Bring a significant amount of effective insect repellent.
- Consider a Thermacell Device: One reviewer highly recommends a Thermacell as a "life saver" for managing mosquitoes at the campsite.
- Wear Protective Clothing: Long sleeves, long pants, and mosquito nets for the head can provide additional protection, especially during portages or times of high insect activity.
- Plan Activities Accordingly: Insect activity might vary depending on the time of day or year. Planning outdoor activities for times when bugs are less prevalent could be beneficial.
Being well-prepared for insects is crucial to fully enjoying the otherwise exceptional experience that Bobcat Campground offers.

Bobcat Campground Reviews
Beautiful area and a really nice campsite. Very peaceful. There is only one other campsite on High Lake and we did see a canoe in the woods at that site as we paddled by looking for our own site, but beyond that, we never saw or heard another person. It was perfect solitude. The pictures don’t do it justice.Yes, the bugs are crazy. Our site itself was just a typical amount of mosquitos that you’d expect in the north woods, but the portage from Crooked Lake to High Lake was like something out of a horror movie. So load up on bug spray before you even start or that first portage will be brutal. Also, I highly recommend Thermacell. They were a life saver.
