Shields River Campground

Bennett Creek Rd, Wilsall, MT 59086, USA

I really enjoy this spot. you have cows walking around, a river right there, the bathrooms are clean and they have a fire pit. There was a lot of flies and a lot of bugs I had to make sure to keep my RV closed up. I really enjoyed the ride to and from this campground. It was very easy for me to do 10 mi an hour and just let people pass me as they came. I did not have cell phone reception up there. - Mitchell Hall

Shields River Campground Introduce

For local users seeking a rustic "camping near me" experience in Montana, Shields River Campground, located on Bennett Creek Rd in Wilsall, MT 59086, USA, offers a riverside setting with some basic amenities. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground presents a mixed experience, with notable positives such as the natural environment and certain facilities, alongside some drawbacks like insect presence and accessibility.

The environment at Shields River Campground is characterized by its location alongside a river, which is a significant natural attraction. The presence of a river often provides opportunities for activities such as fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the soothing sounds of flowing water. One reviewer specifically mentioned the river being "right there," indicating easy access from the campsites.

An interesting and perhaps unique aspect of the environment is the presence of cows roaming around the area. For some, this might add a touch of rural charm and a connection to the local agricultural landscape. However, it's important to be mindful of livestock and maintain a respectful distance, as well as take precautions to secure food and belongings.

In terms of services, Shields River Campground offers clean bathrooms, which is a notable amenity for a more rustic campground setting. The availability of a fire pit at each campsite is also mentioned, providing a traditional camping feature for cooking and enjoying campfires.

However, the reviews also highlight some less desirable aspects of the environment. One camper noted "a lot of flies and a lot of bugs," necessitating keeping their RV closed up. This suggests that insect activity can be significant at certain times, and visitors should come prepared with insect repellent and take measures to protect themselves and their campsites from bugs.

Accessibility to Shields River Campground seems to be a point of contention. One reviewer described the ride to and from the campground as enjoyable, allowing them to drive slowly and let others pass on what was likely a narrow road. In contrast, another reviewer mentioned "a long drive down a dirt road," which they felt was not worth the exchange, especially considering that the "good spots" were taken and the area was dusty.

The issue of dust is raised by the second reviewer, who noted that the campground was "dusty." This could be attributed to the dirt road leading to the campground and possibly dry conditions within the camping area itself. Dust can impact the overall comfort of the camping experience and require extra effort to keep belongings clean.

Another significant environmental concern mentioned is the presence of mosquitoes, described as "terrible" by one reviewer. Mosquitoes can be a major nuisance, especially during warmer months and near water sources, and effective repellent and protective clothing are essential in areas with high mosquito activity.

One reviewer also noted the lack of cell phone reception at the campground, stating, "I did not have cell phone reception up there." This is an important consideration for those who rely on mobile communication for safety or staying connected. The lack of service means that campers should be prepared for limited or no communication capabilities while at the campground.

The second reviewer also mentioned that "the fire cleared out most of the trees," which could imply a more open and less shaded environment in some parts of the campground. This might be a factor to consider depending on preferences for shade and the overall aesthetic of the camping area.

The reviews do not provide specific details about the number or types of campsites available, the presence of other amenities such as water sources or trash disposal, or any specific rules and regulations of the campground. Similarly, there is no promotional information included in the feedback.

For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience near a river in Montana, Shields River Campground offers a rustic option with basic amenities like clean bathrooms and fire pits. The presence of cows might appeal to some seeking a rural setting. However, potential visitors should be prepared for a potentially long and dusty drive on a dirt road, the possibility of significant flies, bugs, and mosquitoes, and the lack of cell phone reception. The availability of good campsites might also be a factor to consider, as one reviewer noted that the best spots were already taken.

To gather more detailed information about Shields River Campground, such as the number of sites, availability of water, trash services, and any specific recommendations for dealing with insects or the road conditions, it would be advisable to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers – (406) 222-1892 or +1 406-222-1892. Speaking with the campground management might provide a clearer picture of the current conditions and what to expect during a stay.

In conclusion, Shields River Campground offers a riverside camping experience with some basic amenities in a rural Montana setting. While the presence of cows and the river might be appealing, potential campers should be aware of the reported issues with dust, insects (flies and mosquitoes), the potentially long drive on a dirt road, and the lack of cell phone service. Depending on individual preferences for a rustic experience and preparedness for these conditions, Shields River Campground could be a viable "camping near me" option. However, further inquiry with the campground management is recommended to ensure it meets specific needs and expectations.
