Halfmoon Campground

Big Timber Canyon Rd, Big Timber, MT 59011, USA

4.0
Half moon campground is a great launching place to hike on trails, or even to just stay there to have a nice picnic. It’s an easy hike to the big timber Creek trails, which are amazing. I was there in the winter. Early January to be exact. There was a cascading set of Falls. It was primarily frozen, and the creek cut through a deep, narrow gorge. It’s at the bottom of the crazy mountains, which give you an amazing view. I did a half day when it was sunny, and another day when there was a foggy misty bit of snow. Different sorts of views, but both were beautiful. - Mark Schweikert

Halfmoon Campground Introduce

For local users in Montana and those searching for "camping near me" in a scenic and adventurous setting, Halfmoon Campground, located on Big Timber Canyon Rd, Big Timber, MT 59011, USA, offers a promising outdoor experience. This introduction provides a detailed, objective overview of the campground based on the available customer reviews, highlighting its environment, services, and features to help you decide if it's the right camping destination for you.

Halfmoon Campground is situated at the base of the Crazy Mountains, a prominent and picturesque mountain range in Montana. This location provides campers with "amazing views" directly from the campground. One reviewer specifically mentioned enjoying both sunny and foggy, snowy conditions, indicating that the scenery offers beauty in various weather conditions. The proximity to the Crazy Mountains suggests opportunities for wildlife viewing and immersing oneself in a rugged and natural environment. For those seeking "camping near me" with breathtaking mountain vistas, Halfmoon Campground appears to be a strong contender.

The campground serves as an excellent "launching place to hike on trails," according to one reviewer. It offers easy access to the Big Timber Creek trails, which are described as "amazing." This suggests that Halfmoon Campground is well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking and exploring the natural surroundings. Another reviewer who visited in early January highlighted a "cascading set of Falls" along Big Timber Creek, which was partially frozen and flowed through a "deep, narrow gorge." This description indicates that the area offers stunning natural features that can be enjoyed throughout the year, with potentially different scenic experiences depending on the season.

A significant advantage of Halfmoon Campground, as noted by a reviewer who stayed for three nights in mid-August 2022, is its affordability. At just $12 per night, it is described as offering "thrilled" campers with "all we got for that price." This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious individuals and families looking for "camping near me" that provides good value for money.

In terms of services and features, the positive review highlights several key aspects. Access to the river for children to play in is a notable feature, suggesting family-friendly activities and opportunities for enjoying the water. The presence of "clean and well maintained" outhouses is another important service, as clean restroom facilities often contribute significantly to a positive camping experience. Potable water is also available for free, allowing campers to refill their water tanks, which is a crucial amenity for longer stays. For those who enjoy campfires, wood is available, although it requires hauling it a few hundred feet from the forest. This indicates a more rustic experience where campers are responsible for gathering their own firewood from the surrounding natural resources.

However, the same detailed review also points out some cons that potential visitors searching for "camping near me" should be aware of. The roads leading to the campground are described as "a little sketchy" with "pretty rough spots." The reviewer, who was pulling a 29-foot camp trailer, advised against attempting to bring a longer trailer into the area. This suggests that the access roads might be unpaved or poorly maintained in sections, potentially posing a challenge for larger RVs or trailers. Additionally, the campground is a "really long drive from the main (paved) road," which might be a consideration for those who prefer easily accessible campsites. The reviewer also noted that the campground, with a total of 18 spots, can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Arriving on a Thursday evening, only four spots were open, and by Friday afternoon, it was full. This indicates that reservations might be necessary or that arriving early, especially during peak season, is advisable to secure a campsite.

Despite these drawbacks, the reviewer who provided the detailed pros and cons still had a "wonderful time" and intends to enjoy the campsite for years to come. This suggests that the positive aspects of Halfmoon Campground, such as its scenic location, river access, affordability, and basic amenities, outweigh the challenges of the access road and potential for overcrowding for many visitors.

For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize natural beauty, hiking opportunities, and river access at an affordable price, Halfmoon Campground in Big Timber, MT, appears to be a compelling option. The stunning views of the Crazy Mountains and the proximity to the Big Timber Creek trails offer significant appeal for outdoor enthusiasts. The availability of potable water and firewood (with some effort) caters to basic camping needs. The clean outhouses also contribute to a more comfortable experience.

However, potential visitors should carefully consider the accessibility of the campground, particularly if they are traveling with larger RVs or trailers. The long drive from the main road and the potentially rough conditions of the access roads might be a deterrent for some. Additionally, the limited number of campsites and their tendency to fill up quickly, especially during peak season, necessitates careful planning and potentially arriving early in the day or week.

In conclusion, Halfmoon Campground offers a rustic and scenic camping experience in the heart of Montana, near the Crazy Mountains and with access to Big Timber Creek. Its affordability and the positive experiences of past visitors highlight its appeal for those seeking "camping near me" with a focus on nature and outdoor activities. However, the challenges related to the access roads and the potential for the campground to be full should be taken into account when planning a visit. Local users are encouraged to consider these factors and perhaps contact the provided phone numbers ((406) 222-1892 and +1 406-222-1892) for more information on current conditions, availability, and any specific recommendations for accessing the campground based on their vehicle type.
