Ely, MN 55731, USA

4.0
One of the best spots on Pipestone Bay for sure. Sand and gravel landing zone for the canoes doubles as a great swimming spot. Short walk up to the campsite atop a huge rock face with an excellent view. Level site with multiple locations for tents. Ideal for larger groups as many of the other sites we stopped at had limited space. the elevation also seemed to trim down the amount of skeeters we had to deal with. Overall a very pleasant stay! - Drey Loge

BWCA Campsite #1587 Introduce

For local adventurers in Minnesota and those seeking an unforgettable wilderness experience, BWCA Campsite #1587 presents an exceptional option within the 'camping near me' category. Located near Ely, MN 55731, USA, this campsite in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) on Pipestone Bay offers a unique blend of natural beauty, practical features, and suitability for various camping preferences, particularly larger groups. Based on firsthand accounts from fellow campers, BWCA Campsite #1587 stands out as a highly recommended spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the pristine wilderness of northern Minnesota.

A Prime Location on Pipestone Bay with Stunning Views

BWCA Campsite #1587 is lauded as "one of the best spots on Pipestone Bay," a testament to its desirable location and the quality of the surrounding environment. Pipestone Bay itself is known for its scenic beauty, and this particular campsite appears to capitalize on the area's natural charm. One of the most striking features is the "amazing rock face overlooking lake," which provides campers with breathtaking panoramic views. This elevated vantage point not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the site but also contributes to a unique camping experience.

The approach to the campsite is also noteworthy. The presence of a "sand and gravel landing zone for the canoes" offers a practical and convenient entry point for those exploring the BWCAW by water. This type of landing is generally easier to navigate and provides a stable area for unloading gear. Furthermore, this landing zone "doubles as a great swimming spot," adding another significant recreational benefit to this campsite. Imagine paddling to your site and having an inviting sandy and gravel beach right there for a refreshing swim in the clear waters of Pipestone Bay.

Spacious and Well-Equipped for Groups

A significant advantage of BWCA Campsite #1587 is its spaciousness. The review explicitly mentions it being "ideal for larger groups" because "many of the other sites we stopped at had limited space." This makes it a valuable option for families, groups of friends, or organized expeditions venturing into the Boundary Waters. The availability of "multiple locations for tents" further underscores its suitability for accommodating a larger number of campers comfortably.

The campsite itself is situated "atop a huge rock face," accessed by a "short walk up" from the landing zone. This elevation not only provides the excellent views but also contributes to a sense of seclusion and immersion in the natural landscape. The camping area is described as a "level site," which is crucial for comfortable tent setup and overall usability of the space. Level ground ensures a better night's sleep and makes it easier to organize your camping gear.

Mitigation of Pesky Insects

One of the often-discussed aspects of camping in northern Minnesota is the presence of mosquitoes. Interestingly, the review notes that "the elevation also seemed to trim down the amount of skeeters we had to deal with." This suggests that the slightly elevated position of BWCA Campsite #1587 might offer a minor advantage in terms of insect activity compared to sites located closer to the water level or in denser vegetation. While mosquitoes are still a consideration (as indicated by the "Grumper - 9/10, due to mosquitos in it" comment), the elevation appears to be a mitigating factor, potentially leading to a more pleasant stay, especially during peak mosquito season.

Considerations for Fishing and Fire

For those planning to fish during their BWCAW adventure, it's important to note the reviewer's assessment that the "Fishing - 4/10" indicates it's "not a very good spot to fish." If fishing is a primary focus of your trip, you might want to research other campsites in the area that are known for better fishing opportunities. However, if fishing is a secondary activity, the other positive attributes of BWCA Campsite #1587 might still make it a worthwhile choice.

The campsite is equipped with a fire pit, which is an essential feature for cooking and enjoying a campfire in the wilderness (when permitted by BWCAW regulations). The review notes "Fire - 7/10, overall good pit with decent amount of wood around." This suggests that the fire pit is functional and that there is a reasonable availability of firewood in the vicinity. However, it's always crucial to check current regulations regarding firewood collection and to practice Leave No Trace principles by using dead and down wood responsibly.

Overall Assessment: A Highly Recommended BWCAW Experience

Based on the detailed feedback from experienced campers, BWCA Campsite #1587 offers a compelling package for those seeking a memorable Boundary Waters experience. Its prime location on Pipestone Bay provides stunning views and easy access to clear water for swimming. The spacious and level campsite is particularly well-suited for larger groups, offering multiple tent locations and a comfortable camping environment. While mosquitoes are a factor to be aware of, the elevation seems to offer some relief. Fishing might not be the primary draw of this specific site, but the presence of a good fire pit and the availability of firewood add to its practicality for wilderness camping.

For local users in Minnesota and those planning a trip to the Boundary Waters, BWCA Campsite #1587, accessible from the Ely area, represents a top-tier option within the 'camping near me' category for those willing to venture into the wilderness. The need for canoe access means it's geared towards those comfortable with paddling and wilderness navigation. However, the rewards of reaching this site – the views, the swimming, the space, and the overall tranquility – appear to be well worth the effort.

Important Considerations for BWCAW Camping

It's crucial to remember that camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness requires proper planning and adherence to specific regulations. This includes obtaining the necessary permits, understanding Leave No Trace principles, being prepared for potential weather changes and wildlife encounters, and packing appropriately for a remote wilderness environment. Information on permits and regulations can be obtained from the Superior National Forest and relevant government agencies.
