Camp Chautauqua Introduce
Looking for a "camping near me" experience on the shores of Chautauqua Lake? Consider Camp Chautauqua, located at 3901 NY-394, Mayville, NY 14757, USA. You can reach them by phone at (716) 789-3435 or mobile at +1 716-789-3435. Situated in Mayville, New York, this campground offers direct lake access, making it particularly appealing for those who enjoy boating and water activities on Chautauqua Lake.
For local users seeking "camping near me" with specific needs, such as easy access for watercraft, Camp Chautauqua presents itself as a strong contender. One reviewer who "absolutely loves this campground" specifically mentioned its incredible convenience for jet skis, highlighting the ease of getting in and out of the water. This suggests that the campground has facilities or a layout that caters well to boaters and water sports enthusiasts. If you own a boat or personal watercraft and are looking for a local campground with seamless lake access, Camp Chautauqua may be an ideal option.
The social environment at Camp Chautauqua also receives positive feedback. The same enthusiastic reviewer noted that, unlike some other campgrounds, the seasonal residents at Camp Chautauqua treat weekend visitors with kindness. This welcoming and inclusive atmosphere can significantly enhance the camping experience, making short-term guests feel like part of the community. The reviewer also mentioned a favorite spot within the campground, which they attained over several years, indicating a loyalty and a sense of belonging that long-term and perhaps even short-term campers might appreciate. Additionally, the staff are consistently described as "kind and friendly," contributing to a positive overall ambiance.
In terms of security and the general environment, Camp Chautauqua offers gated security, which can provide peace of mind for campers regarding the safety of their belongings and their families. The terrain of the campground is described as "hilly," which, while potentially offering some scenic views and the opportunity for a "good walk" within the campground, also presents challenges. Several reviewers noted that the campsites are located on the side of a hill and are therefore not level. This is a crucial point for local users with RVs or trailers, as leveling can be a significant concern. Be prepared to bring leveling blocks and potentially exercise extra caution when setting up your campsite.
The campground does have a camp store, which is described as "adequate" for basic needs. This on-site convenience can be helpful for local campers who may have forgotten essential items or wish to purchase snacks and other necessities without leaving the campground. The check-in staff also received positive mention for being "great," suggesting a smooth and efficient start to your camping stay.
However, it's important for local users to be aware of some potential drawbacks mentioned in the reviews. One significant issue is that you cannot choose your specific campsite when making reservations. The campground management assigns sites, which may not always meet individual needs or preferences. One reviewer detailed a negative experience with their assigned site (#195), noting that it was too short and too narrow for their trailer and tow vehicle. They also experienced a lack of space for their slide-out and truck, as well as a significant slope from front to back, requiring extensive use of leveling blocks and even the need to find a cinder block for an additional step. This experience highlights the potential for uneven and cramped sites, particularly in the section at the back of the camp near the road.
Furthermore, the same reviewer reported issues with the upkeep of their assigned site, noting that the grass was ankle-deep upon arrival and had to be specifically requested to be cut three days later. This suggests that the maintenance of individual sites might not always be consistent. Additionally, they experienced power problems throughout the week, with their surge protector repeatedly kicking on and off. While the campground staff did promptly resolve the issue by replacing a breaker, this incident indicates a potential for electrical problems that local users should be aware of.
Interestingly, the reviewer who had these site-specific issues also noted that there were "a few nicer, longer, wider sites around us sat empty all week." This raises questions about the site assignment process and suggests that better sites might be available but not necessarily allocated to all reservations. The reviewer also pointed out that if a sewer hookup is not required, there are "nicer wooded (shade) sites further down the hill closer to the lake," indicating that the quality and characteristics of the sites can vary significantly within the campground.
Given the mixed reviews, local users considering Camp Chautauqua should weigh the pros and cons carefully. The direct lake access, especially for boaters, the friendly community and staff, and the gated security are significant advantages. However, the potential for non-level, short, or narrow sites, the inability to choose your site at booking, and the possibility of maintenance or power issues are important considerations. If you are a boater or primarily interested in lake access and a friendly community, and you are prepared for potentially challenging site conditions, Camp Chautauqua might be a good option. It would be prudent for local users to inquire about site characteristics and request a site that meets their specific needs when making a reservation, although there is no guarantee of site selection.
In conclusion, Camp Chautauqua offers a unique "camping near me" experience on Chautauqua Lake, particularly appealing to boat owners due to its easy lake access. The campground boasts a welcoming community with friendly seasonal residents and staff, as well as the security of a gated entrance. However, potential local campers should be aware of the hilly terrain, the possibility of being assigned a non-level, short, or narrow site, and potential issues with site maintenance and power. While some campers have had excellent experiences, others have encountered challenges related to their assigned campsite. Therefore, it is recommended that local users contact Camp Chautauqua directly to inquire about site availability and characteristics, especially if you have specific requirements for your camping setup.

Camp Chautauqua Reviews
I absolutely love this campground. We have jet skis so it’s incredibly easy to get in and out of the water. This is the only campground the the seasonal people treat the weekenders with kindness. I have a favorite spot and it took a few years to get there. The staff are always kind and friendly.Just waiting for a seasonal spot to open so I can be there forever
Feb 27, 2025 · Colleen StauchGreat camp if you have a boat. ( We don't) Gated security. Hilly, so you can get a good walk. Camp store adequate, staff at check in was great. You can't choose your site when you make reservations . They put us in the section at the back of the camp, next to the road, all sites are on the side of a hill so they aren't level. We were assigned site #195, too short and too narrow for our trailer and tow vehicle. Our slide out was 7 feet away from the park model next to us and we had to squeeze our truck between a fence and our awning. There's a cable box there so we could only back the truck up so far. If we parked sideways in the front the truck was partially on the road. The sight slopes from front to back so our step legs were fully extended and we had to add additional blocks under them. Found a cinder block to make another step.Grass was not cut when we arrived, ankle deep, had to ask the grass cutters doing the empty sites, 3 days after we arrived,to come do ours.Had power problems all week, surge protector kept kicking on and off, asked the camp address on our second to last day, they promptly came up and replaced the breaker in the main section box, problem resolved.A few nicer, longer, wider sites around us sat empty all week.If you don't need a sewer site there are nicer wooded (shade) sites further down the hill closer to the lake.
Jul 18, 2024 · Bill KnoellWe always enjoy staying in a site near the water...it's a small paradise. However, we wish that the trees and bushes were trimmed back so our motorhome doesn't get scratched on them upon arrival and departure.
Sep 08, 2024 · Bob SkrabaI've been camping my whole life, and I've got thoughts about this one. The lake is beautiful, and the camp is well maintained. However, this campground is all about the seasonal sites. You can't see the lake from any trailer or tent sites, as the seasonals get front row. We were the only ones in our area of the camp, and we were given a site that was less than eight feet from the seasonal next to us. WHOLE campground, and we were squeezed in for a week on a totally unlevel site. (Had to go and search for a cinder block to use as the bottom step into the trailer, it was that far off the ground.)Power was going in and out for a day and a half on 90-degree days until they had to replace something in a circuit box.Bathrooms were clean and plentiful, trash was emptied, recycling containers were available. If I were coming back, I'd look for another campground along the lake.
Jul 18, 2024 · Sharan KnoellWe came up for the fall leaves and they did not disappoint. This campground is huge with lots of seasonal/permanent trailers but they are well cared for and almost like tiny houses. There's access to the lake, a beautiful pool, playgrounds, and a petting zoo. They have a large camp store and helpful office staff. We definitely plan to return in the summer to take full advantage of the amenities!
