Chilhowee Group Camp Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me," particularly those planning a group outing, Chilhowee Group Camp, located in Benton, TN 37307, USA, presents a compelling option. Situated near the scenic Chilhowee Lake and the popular Benton Falls trailhead, this campground offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. While one review provides both positive and negative aspects, the overall sentiment suggests a worthwhile experience, especially for large groups seeking a dedicated camping space.
One of the primary advantages of Chilhowee Group Camp, as highlighted by a reviewer, is that it is a "beautiful group campsite that is huge." This spaciousness is a significant benefit for larger parties, providing ample room to set up camp and enjoy activities without feeling cramped. The reviewer also noted that the group campsite is "separate from the rest of the campsite," implying a degree of privacy and exclusivity for group bookings. This separation can enhance the group experience, allowing for more freedom and less concern about disturbing other campers.
The location of Chilhowee Group Camp offers convenient access to several natural attractions. A "short walk up to the lake" provides campers with easy entry to Chilhowee Lake, a beautiful body of water that serves as a focal point for recreation. Additionally, the campground is situated near the "Benton Falls trailhead," making it an ideal base for those interested in hiking to the picturesque Benton Falls. The combination of lake and waterfall access provides diverse opportunities for outdoor exploration and enjoyment.
For families and those looking to cool off during the warmer months, Chilhowee Lake features a "nice beach area for kids to swim/play in." This amenity adds significant value, especially for group outings that include families with children. The presence of a designated swimming area ensures a safe and enjoyable water-based activity for younger members of the group.
Another significant "pro" mentioned by a reviewer is the overall beauty of the area, encompassing the lakes, walking trails, and campsites. This reinforces the notion that Chilhowee Group Camp is located in a naturally appealing environment, offering scenic views and opportunities for immersion in nature. The availability of kayaking nearby further expands the recreational options for visitors, allowing them to explore the lake from a different perspective.
However, it's important to consider the "cons" mentioned in one of the reviews to have a balanced perspective. One concern was that "the campsites are a little close together." While this comment was made in a general sense and might not apply to the separate group campsite, it's something to be aware of if your group values a high degree of seclusion from other campers outside your party. It would be beneficial to inquire about the layout of the group site specifically when booking.
Another significant drawback mentioned was that "the directions here from the confirmation email were SUPER vague and we got lost for a long time." This highlights a potential issue with wayfinding, and it would be prudent for anyone booking Chilhowee Group Camp to obtain clear and detailed directions prior to their arrival, perhaps by contacting the campground directly at (423) 338-3300 or +1 423-338-3300.
The final "con" noted was that "others don’t need to camp to have lake/trail/site access so it’s very busy." This suggests that the area around Chilhowee Lake and Benton Falls is a popular destination for day visitors as well as campers. While this indicates the attractiveness of the location, it also means that the campground and surrounding areas might experience higher levels of traffic and activity, particularly on weekends and during peak seasons. Groups seeking a completely isolated experience should be aware of this potential for crowds.
Despite these drawbacks, the reviewer still offered a "3/5 recommend," indicating that the positive aspects, such as the beauty of the area and the group campsite itself, outweigh the negatives for many. For a large group looking for a spacious camping area with access to a lake for swimming and boating, as well as proximity to a notable hiking trail and waterfall, Chilhowee Group Camp appears to be a viable option within the "camping near me" category.
To obtain specific details about the Chilhowee Group Camp, including the exact size and layout of the group campsite, available amenities (such as restrooms, water access, fire pits, picnic tables), and any specific regulations or guidelines for group camping, it is highly recommended to contact the campground directly at the provided phone numbers. Inquiring about the best route to the campground and any potential tips for avoiding getting lost would also be beneficial.
Promotional information is not available in the provided text. However, when contacting Chilhowee Group Camp, it would be worthwhile to ask about any group rates, seasonal discounts, or special offers that might be applicable to your group's stay. Booking in advance is generally recommended for group campsites, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability.
In conclusion, Chilhowee Group Camp offers a spacious and beautiful group camping experience in close proximity to Chilhowee Lake and the Benton Falls trailhead. The availability of a swimming beach, kayaking nearby, and scenic walking trails adds to its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts. While potential drawbacks such as vague directions and potential crowds should be considered, the overall positive feedback suggests that this campground is a strong contender for local users planning a group "camping near me" adventure in the Benton, Tennessee area. Direct communication with the campground is essential to gather all necessary details and ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Chilhowee Group Camp Reviews
Beautiful group campsite that is huge. Lots of run to camp in and separate from the rest of the campsite. If the gate is left open prior will drive down so make sure the gate is kept closed if you don’t want random visitors. Short walk up to the lake and the Benton Falls trailhead. The lake has a nice beach area for kids to swim/play in. We will definitely be back.
Jul 10, 2024 · Dominic NormanPros: The lakes, walking trails, campsites here are very beautiful and you’re able to go kayaking nearby.Cons: The campsites are a little close together for us, the directions here from the confirmation email were SUPER vague and we got lost for a long time, others don’t need to camp to have lake/trail/site access so it’s very busy.3/5 recommend.
Jun 11, 2023 · AbbyWe stayed at Chilhowee Group Camp in mid June. There are 2 ample parking lots with lots of trees and open space. The group camp has one bathhouse with a vault toilet (think porta potty). There is also one RV space with water and electricity. Be careful on the drive in, our GPS took us up a horrible gravel road that had huge ruts and no guardrail (Benton Springs Rd). In order to avoid this, take highway 74 to the beautiful Oswald Road. The extra 11 miles are full of gorgeous views and it will take you about the same amount of time (especially if you have a small car or camper).PROS: There is a sandy swimming beach and a nicer bathhouse (with showers) about a 1/4 mile walk from the group camp. The Benton Falls hike is also close. There is plenty of space for over 10 large tents, many hammocks, and one RV. There are about 15 picnic tables in 3 rows for the group to share as well as 4 or 5 other picnic tables scattered throughout the camp. We used the little charcoal grill but there was also a very large charcoal grill available. The kids enjoyed playing in a small field as the adults sat around the large fire ring. There were a few pieces of firewood already there and we were easily able to find more. Our cost was only $50 per night.CONS: This group site has extremely poor drainage. There were muddy spots everywhere! They have small ditches that helped route the water, but the field turned into a swamp after the rain. The camp clearly had not been mowed in quite a while - there were long weeds in the grass that hit us in the shins as we walked. We didn't really use the bathhouse in our site because of the HORRENDOUS smell - it was absolutely disgusting. We had to remember to constantly close the gate to the group camp because curious people felt comfortable driving right into our camp (some even walking around). We saw 3 or 4 fire ant hills right in the middle of our site and one adult was bitten over 50 times around the feet and ankles.Overall, this site was decent. It was cheap and there was plenty of space for a large group. Not our favorite group site, but not the worst by a long shot.
Jun 25, 2019 · Jennifer ReynoldsVery nice place to go hiking and there is a lake for swimming along with s picnic area. Parking is s few bucks and done by the honor system. The only negative thing I have to say about the place is the bathrooms was gross. At least the one I went in. Basically it was a hole in the ground and stunk to all hell. The rest of the place is beautiful. Especially with the leaves changing color right now.
Nov 15, 2018 · Martin BerndtIt’s nice, pretty waterfall, clean, has showers. Group site is big, just no pavilion or any sort of cover. Over all good camp site.
