Chilkoot Campground Introduce
For those seeking an authentic and tranquil outdoor experience, Chilkoot Campground, located at CA-284, Bass Lake, CA 93604, USA, stands out as an exceptional destination within the "Camping Near Me" category. Nestled within the breathtaking Sierra National Forest at an elevation of approximately 4,600 feet, Chilkoot offers a rustic yet remarkably well-maintained camping experience, highly praised by visitors for its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and excellent management.
The environment at Chilkoot Campground is its most compelling feature. Shaded by a majestic grove of Ponderosa pine, fir, and cedar trees, the campground provides ample space for both tent and RV camping. The presence of Chilkoot Creek, which runs by the campground, adds to the serene ambiance, with the soothing sound of flowing water contributing to the overall sense of peace. The elevation ensures a comfortable camping experience even during the hottest summer days, offering a refreshing escape from lower-lying areas. The surrounding Sierra National Forest is a vibrant natural landscape, characterized by stunning mountain scenery, clear lakes, and diverse vegetation, creating an ideal backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. The air is fresh, and the natural sounds are abundant, making it a true immersion into wilderness, far from the urban clamor. While specific details on individual site layouts vary, visitors often highlight the dispersed nature of the campsites, offering a good degree of privacy and a feeling of seclusion, even when the campground is busy. Bear country precautions are necessary, with campers advised to use food storage boxes and bring mosquito repellent, indicating a genuine connection to the wild.
While Chilkoot Campground embraces a rustic charm, it does not compromise on essential services that enhance the camping experience. The campground provides vault toilets, which are consistently lauded by visitors for their cleanliness and fresh smell – a remarkable feat for a basic facility in a natural setting. This attention to hygiene is a significant advantage, often attributed to the diligent efforts of the camp host. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, allowing campers to prepare meals and enjoy campfires under the stars. Firewood is often available for sale on-site, adding to the convenience. Crucially, the campground operates with a dedicated camp host, an amenity that receives overwhelmingly positive feedback. Hosts like Mike, mentioned in customer reviews, are commended for being welcoming, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable about the local area, providing valuable information on activities and maintaining the campground's high standards. While potable water is noted by some reviews as not being readily available, suggesting campers should bring their own, this minor inconvenience is widely considered a small trade-off for the otherwise exceptional natural setting and well-kept facilities. There are no electric hookups or showers, reinforcing the "true to camping form" experience, catering to those who genuinely seek a natural escape.
The features of Chilkoot Campground extend beyond its basic amenities to the wealth of recreational opportunities in its vicinity, making it a prime spot for those searching for "Camping Near Me" with activities in mind. Bass Lake, a popular recreation and resort area, is just a short drive away, offering a plethora of water-based activities including motorized and non-motorized boating, fishing, swimming, waterskiing, and sailing. The lake is well-stocked with various fish, including trout, providing excellent fishing prospects. For hiking enthusiasts, there are numerous trails within the Sierra National Forest suitable for different skill levels, with some leading to stunning natural features like waterfalls. The nearby Chilkoot Creek itself offers opportunities for trout fishing. The campground's strategic location also places it within easy reach of other major attractions; Yosemite National Park is approximately 1.5 hours north, and Sequoia National Park is about 3 hours south, making Chilkoot an excellent base camp for exploring the wider region. The absence of Wi-Fi, often highlighted as a positive by campers, further reinforces the campground's commitment to providing a true escape from digital distractions, encouraging a deeper connection with nature and fellow campers.
Promotional information, gleaned from customer reviews, paints a vivid picture of Chilkoot Campground's appeal. Visitors from as far as The Netherlands have expressed immense satisfaction, describing it as "a beautiful, serene and peaceful campsite" and "the absolute best camping place in all of Ca!" The consistent praise for the camp host, the cleanliness of the restrooms, and the general peacefulness of the site are powerful endorsements. The pricing is also attractive, with rates typically around $30 per night for a single site, and plenty of first-come, first-served sites available, although reservations can also be made through Recreation.gov. This combination of affordability and accessibility makes it an appealing choice for a wide range of campers. The mention of "trout-filled water" and the lake being "10 minutes away" serves as enticing highlights for potential visitors, particularly those interested in fishing or water sports. The phone numbers, (530) 283-2050 and +1 530-283-2050, provide direct contact for inquiries and further information, ensuring ease of communication for prospective campers. The overall sentiment from reviews emphasizes a back-to-basics, highly rewarding camping experience, where the lack of certain modern amenities is seen as a strength rather than a drawback, promoting genuine outdoor enjoyment and relaxation.

Chilkoot Campground Reviews
We visited from The Netherlands and stayed for 2 nights. What a beautiful, serene and peaceful campsite this is! And its kept this way by the attentive camphost Mike. We travelled across Utah, Nevada and California and stayed at various campsites but this site had the best camphost by far. He was very welcoming, shared a ton of information on things to do in the area (would recommend a lazy afternoon around Bass Lake!!). He also kept the site and toilets clean (and even smelling fresh). This site might not have the same amenities as some others, such as potable water, but the true feeling of being in nature, the peace and quiet is totally worth bringing your own water along for. Would totally recommend and love to visit again!
Aug 13, 2024 · Hina HussainThe absolute best camping place in all of Ca! This campground has the cleanest restrooms, the best host, the most true to camping form place I’ve been to in years. Prices are 30$ a night with plenty of first come sites available! Water is filled with trout- the lake is 10 minutes away- what more could want? Best part? No WIFI!
Aug 12, 2020 · Nicole EvansChilkoot is a family campground and there is a camp host on duty that will enforce the rules. The campground and restrooms were kept clean during my visit. The camp host was great and made my stay enjoyable.I wrote this in response to Mary Ellen's review. I was camped next to them in site 8 and I was the one who complained to the camp host about their music. Their music could be hear across the camp. It was very loud and the whole group was too. I also witness a woman from that group screaming racist in front of camp host site. The camp host did not come out of his RV.It sad that people can't have any consideration for others that want to just enjoy the outdoors in peace.I watch the camp host both times when he interacted with them for about the the total of five minutes. That group could have called the ranger them selves, but they knew there were in the wrong and I guess that's why the camp host recorded them. It's clear by her writings that she is a mean hateful and self centered person that just wants to harass the camp host for revenge.
Apr 10, 2025 · Siggy's HolidayIt was fun sleeping under the stars. Everything was very clean including restrooms and the camp host is very nice. I recommend this camp site very much and just letting u know Google maps takes you Forest service quarters in north fork ca. when actually the camp site is right across the street, caddy corner from Pine’s resort and Duecy’s bar and grill.
