This was a 10/10 experience, I loved it and I think you will too! There is plenty of space, gorgeous river and I slept amazingly, the white noise was fantastic. Make sure to pack pants and long sleeves. The mosquitos weren't too awful, But you definitely need bug spray. Not alot of neighbors, so the camp was basically ours. - Joseph Lafferty

For local users searching for "camping near me" around McCall, Idaho, Chinook Campground, located on Tollgate Rd, McCall, ID 83638, USA (phone: (208) 634-0700 or +1 208-634-0700), offers a unique and seemingly highly-regarded camping experience. Based on the enthusiastic customer reviews, this campground provides a blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and a sense of peaceful isolation.

One reviewer described their experience as "10/10," stating they "loved it" and believed others would too. They highlighted the "plenty of space," a "gorgeous river," and the fantastic sleep they had thanks to the "white noise" from the river. They advised packing pants and long sleeves and bringing bug spray, noting that while the mosquitoes weren't too bad, protection was still needed. This camper also appreciated the lack of crowds, feeling like the camp was "basically ours." This paints a picture of a spacious and relatively private campground with a beautiful riverside setting.

Another reviewer echoed the beauty of the campground but also pointed out its isolation, mentioning it's "probably a solid 30+ minute drive on a dirt road." While this remoteness might deter some, they felt it was "totally worth the trip to the car wash when you get home," implying the beauty and experience outweighed the dusty drive. This reinforces the idea of Chinook Campground being a more secluded option for those willing to venture a bit off the beaten path.

Further details about the campground layout and amenities come from another camper who noted "two sections of camp sites." Staying in the first area, they observed that even on a summer weekend, only two other sites were occupied, again highlighting the potential for a less crowded experience. They recommended opting for a "double space" even if not strictly needed, as the single spaces were described as having "not very much shade" and being "tiny," while the double spaces offered "all the room you'll need and plenty of shade." This is valuable advice for local campers planning their stay.

Regarding payment, it's crucial to "be sure to bring cash in incremental amounts" as there is no one on-site to provide change. The rates mentioned were $10 per night for single spaces and $15 for doubles. One camper recounted paying more than intended due to not having the exact amount. This is an important practical tip for anyone heading to Chinook Campground.

The campsites themselves are equipped with "fire pits with an attached grill/adjustable grate" and "convenient metal tables for putting hot pans on or coffee pots," indicating basic but useful amenities for cooking and convenience. The first camping area is located close to the river, providing the soothing sound of the flowing water. The river is described as "slow moving," so the sound is not overwhelming. This proximity also allows for direct access to the water for various activities.

One of the most appealing features mentioned was the opportunity to "pan for gold" in the river, which one camper found to be an incredibly "soothing and relaxing" experience. Additionally, fly fishing seems to be popular, with the reviewer's boyfriend and brother each catching rainbow trout using a specific fly pattern. The water level was noted as "low and warm enough to where you can wade" comfortably, though water shoes or shoes with good grip are recommended due to small rocks in the river.

Finally, a camper shared that "one day of camping at this place left a memory that I'll have for my entire life," underscoring the positive impact of the location. They did advise being prepared for cooler nighttime temperatures, even in August, as it reportedly dropped down to around 40 degrees, contrasting with perfect daytime temperatures in the high 70s to low 80s. This highlights the need to pack layers, even during the summer months.

In summary, for local users seeking "camping near me," Chinook Campground near McCall, ID, offers:

  • A beautiful riverside setting with a "gorgeous river."
  • Spacious campsites, with double sites recommended for more room and shade.
  • Opportunities for fishing (rainbow trout) and gold panning.
  • A generally quiet and less crowded experience, even on summer weekends.
  • Basic amenities including fire pits with grills and metal tables.
  • The soothing sound of the nearby slow-moving river.

However, potential visitors should also note:

  • A relatively isolated location requiring a 30+ minute drive on a dirt road.
  • The need to bring exact cash for payment ($10/single, $15/double per night).
  • The importance of packing bug spray due to mosquitoes.
  • The potential for cooler nighttime temperatures, even in summer.
  • Limited information about other services (e.g., water, toilets), suggesting a more rustic experience.

For local residents looking for a secluded camping getaway with opportunities for fishing, gold panning, and enjoying the tranquility of a riverside setting, Chinook Campground appears to be an excellent choice. The positive reviews emphasize its beauty and the memorable experiences it offers. Just be sure to come prepared for the dirt road access, bring exact cash for the fee, pack for varying temperatures and insects, and be ready to enjoy a more isolated and nature-focused camping trip.
