Northwest Passage Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a beautiful and conveniently located "camping near me" experience by the water near McCall, Idaho, Northwest Passage Campground on East Side Rd offers an appealing option. Situated right by The Meanders, this campground is praised for its woodsy environment, cleanliness, and friendly hosts. It caters to a variety of campers, from individuals to larger groups, and provides access to lake activities. However, potential visitors should be aware of a significant factor mentioned in the reviews: the presence of mosquitoes, particularly during certain times of the year.
Picturesque Woodsy Environment by The Meanders: A Natural Haven
Northwest Passage Campground is consistently described as a "beautiful campground" with a "very woodsy" feel. This suggests a setting rich in trees, providing shade and a sense of natural immersion for campers. Its prime location right by The Meanders, likely a scenic and potentially meandering section of a waterway connected to Payette Lake, offers a unique and attractive environment. The proximity to the water enhances the natural beauty and provides opportunities for water-based activities. One reviewer specifically mentioned campsite 312 as being first-come, first-served and very woodsy with no close neighbors, highlighting the potential for a secluded and private camping experience within the campground. The overall environment seems ideal for those seeking a tranquil and nature-filled "camping near me" getaway.
Clean Facilities and Friendly Hosts: Ensuring a Pleasant Stay
A recurring positive aspect mentioned in the reviews is the cleanliness of Northwest Passage Campground. Visitors consistently describe the site as "CLEAN!" and "very clean campground," indicating a well-maintained environment that contributes to a comfortable camping experience. The presence of toilets is noted, with one reviewer mentioning that their spot was conveniently located near them. Additionally, the camp host, Scott, is specifically praised for being "so friendly!" This suggests that visitors can expect a welcoming and helpful presence on-site, enhancing their overall stay. The combination of a clean environment and friendly service adds significant value for local users seeking a hassle-free "camping near me" option.
Direct Access to The Meanders and Beach Area: Water Activities at Your Doorstep
A significant feature of Northwest Passage Campground is its direct access to The Meanders and a beach area. This allows campers to easily engage in water activities such as stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), as one reviewer mentioned putting in their SUP right by their campsite. The proximity to the beach also suggests opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and simply enjoying the lakeside environment. For local residents looking for "camping near me" with convenient access to water recreation, Northwest Passage Campground offers a prime location. The availability of beach access caters to families and individuals looking to enjoy the lake during their camping trip.
Mosquito Warning: A Key Consideration, Especially in June
While the campground boasts many positive attributes, a significant drawback highlighted in the reviews is the issue with mosquitoes. One reviewer stated that the mosquitoes were "so bad" that they only stayed one of their booked nights, even with bug spray proving ineffective. Another camper, writing in mid-June, mentioned "wayyy too many mosquitoes" but found it tolerable with bug spray and candles. This indicates that during certain times of the year, particularly in June, mosquitoes can be a significant nuisance at Northwest Passage Campground. Local users considering this "camping near me" option should be well-prepared with strong insect repellent, mosquito nets, and other protective measures, especially if planning a trip during the early summer months. This is a crucial factor to consider when deciding if this campground is the right choice for your getaway.
Pet Policy: Generally Welcoming but with Restrictions
One reviewer shared their experience camping with dogs, noting that while there were signs stating that dogs must be leashed and are not allowed on the beach or fishing pond, their dogs had fun and they didn't encounter any issues. This suggests that Northwest Passage Campground is generally pet-friendly, allowing dogs on the campsites as long as they are leashed. However, the restrictions on the beach and fishing pond should be noted by pet owners. While the reviewer still had an "amazing trip" with their dogs, local users seeking a fully unrestricted pet-friendly "camping near me" option might want to consider these limitations.
Quiet During the Week, Busier on Weekends: Plan Accordingly
One reviewer noted that the campground was "very quiet on Monday-Wednesday" but tends to "fill up by Thursday afternoon." This information is valuable for local users seeking a peaceful "camping near me" experience. If tranquility is a priority, planning a midweek stay might be preferable. Those camping on weekends should expect a potentially busier atmosphere. This fluctuation in occupancy is typical for many campgrounds, especially those in desirable locations like Northwest Passage Campground near McCall.

Northwest Passage Campground Reviews
Beautiful campground, great spot right by The Meanders. We got spot 312, its first come first serve, very woodsy - we had no close neighbors. Paid for two nights but only stayed one because the mosquitos were so bad. Our spot was convenient- by the toilets and the beach where you put in your sup. The camp host, Scott, was so friendly! Very clean campground. Only taking off a star for the mosquitos. Even bug spray couldn’t keep them away. Wonderful time on the meanders though!
Aug 06, 2024 · Nicole CummingsWe are here tent camping in Mid-June. There is wayyy too many mosquitoes but it’s tolerable with bug spray and candles. It was very quiet on Monday-Wednesday, it will fill up by Thursday afternoon. Everyone is very friendly and the sight is CLEAN! Really nice camping areas with a few being close to the beach. Good from lone campers to bigger parties of all camping styles! We did run into a few unleashed dogs, signs everywhere stating they must be leashed, and dogs are not allowed on beach or fishing pond so I wouldn’t say this is 100% pet friendly but our dogs had fun and we didn’t have any issues so it was still an amazing trip with everything we were looking for in a little get away
Jun 14, 2024 · Just LoveOne of our most favorite Idaho campgrounds. We've been coming here for years - 1st come 1st serve. Bring a pen and a check! It would be wonderful if the park service had a way to offer discounts and/or priority for native Idahoans... just a thought with the pop influx.
Aug 08, 2023 · Amy StormsIncredible place to chill out and kayaking; fishing in the river for bass and northern pike-minnow; fishing for rainbow trout in the lake and pond. From Northwest Passage Campground takes 30 min paddle kayaks to the lake on 3 m/hr speed and back to the campground little longer about 40-45 min. I will definitely go there again.
