Grouse Campground Introduce
Looking for a tranquil and secluded "camping near me" experience? Grouse Campground, located off Old Goose Lake Rd in McCall, Idaho, might be the perfect destination for you. Based on feedback from fellow campers, this site offers a quieter, more remote atmosphere away from the hustle of towns, coupled with scenic beauty and opportunities for outdoor activities. For local users seeking a relaxed and nature-filled getaway, Grouse Campground presents an appealing option.
Environment: Secluded Beauty with Lake Views and Wildlife
The environment of Grouse Campground is consistently described as beautiful and secluded. One reviewer noted the "beautiful views" and the presence of hiking trails around Goose Lake, suggesting a picturesque setting that invites exploration. The campground's distance from towns contributes to its quiet and relaxed ambiance, making it an ideal escape for those seeking peace and solitude in nature.
A unique aspect of the Grouse Campground experience, highlighted by both reviewers, is the presence of cows roaming the area. These gentle creatures seem to be a common sight, described as "fun to watch" and even visiting campsites. This adds a touch of pastoral charm to the camping experience. Additionally, one reviewer mentioned a potential bear visit, underscoring the importance of wildlife awareness and proper food storage in this area. The proximity to Goose Lake also suggests potential for lake-related activities, although one review mentions the lake being marshy with cow dung, but still suitable for kayaking or paddleboarding.
One reviewer also mentioned camping by a creek that leads into the lake, indicating the presence of varied water features in the vicinity. For those who appreciate a more natural and less developed camping setting, Grouse Campground, with its combination of lake views, hiking trails, and wildlife encounters, could be a delightful choice.
Features and Activities: Hiking, Lake Activities, and Wildlife Observation
Based on the customer reviews, Grouse Campground and its surroundings offer several features and activities. The presence of hiking trails around Goose Lake is a significant draw for those who enjoy exploring on foot and taking in scenic vistas. The lake itself, while described as marshy in parts, is still considered "fine for kayaking or paddle boarding," offering opportunities for water-based recreation.
A unique feature of this campground is the frequent presence of cows, providing an interesting wildlife observation opportunity. However, it's important to remember that this is still wild country, as indicated by the potential bear sighting. Campers should be prepared to secure their food properly to avoid attracting wildlife. The remoteness of the campground also contributes to a sense of peace and quiet, which many find appealing.
While not explicitly stated, it's reasonable to assume that Grouse Campground offers basic camping amenities such as designated campsites. Given the mention of a campsite by a creek in one review, there may be a variety of camping spots with different natural surroundings to choose from. For local users looking for a campground that prioritizes a natural setting and opportunities for hiking and gentle lake activities, with the added bonus of wildlife sightings, Grouse Campground appears to fit the bill.
Services: Remoteness and Natural Focus
The reviews emphasize the remoteness of Grouse Campground, suggesting that it might offer fewer developed services compared to more commercial campgrounds. The mention of "dispersed free camping by the lake" in one review indicates that there might be both designated sites and opportunities for a more self-sufficient camping experience in the area. The focus seems to be more on the natural environment and the secluded atmosphere rather than extensive amenities.
While the phone number is provided, suggesting some level of management or contact point, the reviews do not detail specific services like hookups, restrooms, or water sources. Local users considering Grouse Campground should be prepared for a more rustic camping experience and might need to bring their own supplies and be self-sufficient, especially if opting for the dispersed camping areas. It would be advisable to contact the provided phone number for more information on the specific services available at the designated campground area.

Grouse Campground Reviews
This campground is one of our favorites. It’s quiet and secluded enough from any towns. This campsite has beautiful views and hiking trails on Goose Lake. The best part was the cows all around. They are fun to watch! We do believe we had a bear visit us one night in camp, so always make sure you’re packing away food at night. Definitely recommend for a more secluded and relaxed campsite.
Jun 27, 2023 · Kaitie LoughmillerVery remote, but there's a lot of great campgrounds in the area. We stayed away from paid campgrounds and continued into dispersed free camping by the lake. The lake is marshy and has lots of cow dung, but it's fine for kayaking or paddle boarding. Our campsite was by a creek that led into the lake. Plus, a herd of cows came by our tent. We woke up in the morning to a couple of them munching on some grass nearby. Really cool experience.
Jul 20, 2021 · Natalie BeairdGreat spot. Be advised, 6.5 mile dirt/gravel/washboard road in. At night DONT miss the quick right turn into the campground just past the creek and cattle bridge. Google Maps will tell you there is another entrance, there is not! No fun backing a trailer in the dark! We were here mid week, all by ourselves for a day and the just a couple of other campers. Host is super nice! Pro tip, there is a snow sports parking area (great Mtn bike trails)before heading up or the ski resort to pull off and sleep if your coming very late and this is your first time up. Most sites are good, next time if it’s dark we will spend the night at the boat ramp as you will most likely need to do some leveling on an a trailer.
Aug 11, 2022 · Scott JonesFantastic spot! Extremely clean. Plenty of room between spots. Camp host (Jill) is amazing - extremely knowledgeable, funny, super helpful. Trees, lake, fresh air, oh... and more trees.
Aug 08, 2023 · Dan EAwesome place to camp! I stayed at the north end of the lake and absolutely loved it. Quiet, and very dark at night with very little light pollution. My little car made it through the unpaved road just fine. Will absolutely be staying here again!
