Last Chance Campground

Last Chance Rd, New Meadows, ID 83654, USA

4.0
We enjoyed our stay here in a small camping trailer. It is quiet, 2+ miles off the highway on a gravel road. The camp host was present and friendly; the concrete vault toilets were newer and clean. There are 2…6 sites, $10/night, well spaced around with plenty of shade as in late June it was warm, 84F. There is potable water here. The wild flowers were in bloom and the mosquitoes were not a problem. Goose Creek was refreshing to wash the trail dust off. Camp is 12 miles from city life and supplies. We would camp here again. Campground will be closed July 7, 2024 for the season due to bridge construction on the highway. - Flash Robster

Looking for a serene "camping near me" that serves as a gateway to beautiful trails? Last Chance Campground, located off Last Chance Rd in New Meadows, Idaho, appears to be a favored spot, particularly for those interested in hiking. Reviews highlight its quiet atmosphere, clean facilities, and convenient access to local trails, including the popular Goose Creek Falls trail. For local users seeking a peaceful camping experience with opportunities for exploration, Last Chance Campground is a compelling option.

Environment: Quiet Seclusion with Trail Access

The environment surrounding Last Chance Campground is described as quiet and somewhat secluded, situated more than two miles off the highway via a gravel road. This distance from the main road contributes to a more peaceful camping experience. The presence of mature trees provides "plenty of shade," which was appreciated by a visitor during a warm late June stay where the temperature reached 84F. The blooming wildflowers also add to the natural beauty of the area during certain times of the year.

A significant environmental feature is the proximity to Goose Creek, which one reviewer found "refreshing to wash the trail dust off." This suggests that the creek is easily accessible from the campground and offers a way to cool down after a hike. The campground's location also makes it a convenient base for exploring the trails in the area, with one reviewer specifically mentioning coming to this campground for that purpose. The overall ambiance seems to be one of natural beauty and tranquility, ideal for those looking to escape the hustle of city life.

It's also worth noting that mosquitoes were reported as "not a problem" during one reviewer's late June visit, which is a welcome detail for summer camping. The combination of shade, creek access, and trail proximity makes the environment of Last Chance Campground particularly appealing for outdoor enthusiasts.

Services and Features: Clean Amenities and Potable Water

Last Chance Campground offers several notable services and features that enhance the camping experience. One reviewer specifically mentioned the "concrete vault toilets" being "newer and clean," which is always a significant plus for campers. The availability of "potable water" is another important amenity, ensuring that campers have access to drinking water. The campground has between two and six sites (the review mentions "2…6 sites"), suggesting a relatively small and intimate camping area. The cost is reported as $10 per night, making it an affordable option.

The campsites are described as "well spaced around," indicating that campers can expect a degree of privacy. The presence of a camp host suggests that there is some level of on-site management, which can be helpful for any questions or concerns. The primary feature that draws many visitors seems to be the access to the trails in the area, particularly the trail to Goose Creek Falls. One reviewer prefers starting the hike from this end due to it being less steep compared to the trail from Brundage.

It's important to note that the campground was mentioned to be closing on July 7, 2024, for the season due to bridge construction on the highway. While this specific closure date has passed (given the current date of May 10, 2025), it highlights the potential for seasonal closures or impacts due to infrastructure projects. Local users planning to visit should check for any current advisories or closure information.
