Dakota Sunsets Campground Introduce
For local users and travelers alike searching for "camping near me" in southeastern South Dakota, Dakota Sunsets Campground, located at 25495 US-81, Salem, SD 57058, USA, offers a clean, quiet, and well-maintained option for an overnight stay or a longer visit. While it operates with a streamlined, mostly online self-check-in system and has limited on-site amenities like a camp store or dedicated camp host, its cleanliness, ease of access, and quiet environment, as highlighted by recent customer reviews, make it a noteworthy consideration.
A Clean and Quiet Environment Off the Beaten Path:
Dakota Sunsets Campground is praised consistently for its cleanliness. Reviewers specifically mention the "very clean grounds" and "good size bathrooms too that are clean." This emphasis on hygiene contributes significantly to a comfortable and pleasant camping experience. Furthermore, its location approximately one mile off Interstate 90 ensures a notably quiet atmosphere, a welcome respite for those seeking peace and tranquility away from highway noise. One visitor described it as "quiet since it is a mile off I-90." This peaceful environment makes it an attractive option for travelers looking for a restful night's sleep or a serene longer stay.
The campground features level gravel sites and hard-packed gravel roads, making it easy to navigate and set up camp, particularly for RVers. The open layout is typical of the South Dakota landscape, potentially offering views of the expansive skies and, as the name suggests, beautiful sunsets. While some reviewers noted windy conditions, this is a common characteristic of the prairie environment and something to be prepared for.
Services and Amenities Focused on Convenience and Comfort:
Based on customer feedback, Dakota Sunsets Campground offers essential services and amenities, primarily catering to self-sufficient campers:
- Water, Electric, and Sewer Hookups: For RV travelers, the availability of full hookups (water, electric, and sewer) at many sites is a significant advantage, allowing for a comfortable and convenient stay. One reviewer specifically mentioned having "good site, water, electric, and sewer" for their three-night stay.
- Clean Bathrooms: As repeatedly mentioned, the bathrooms are well-maintained and clean, a crucial amenity for all campers, whether in RVs or tents.
- Nice Sized Laundry Facilities: The presence of "nice sized laundry facilities" is a valuable amenity, especially for those on longer trips, allowing them to take care of laundry needs conveniently on-site.
- Level Gravel Sites and Roads: The level gravel sites make parking and setup easier for RVs, and the hard-packed gravel roads ensure good traction and minimal dust.
- Playground: The availability of a playground is a plus for families traveling with children, providing a dedicated space for kids to play and burn off energy.
- Easy Self-Check-In: The campground utilizes a straightforward self-check-in process, which many found convenient, especially for late arrivals or those who prefer a contactless experience. One reviewer noted, "Self-check in easy."
- Proximity to Local Amenities in Salem: While the town of Salem is described as "little" with "not much there," it does offer essential amenities such as a Dollar General, a sports bar, and fuel stations, providing convenient access for basic needs. The campground is also located approximately 1.5 miles from Interstate 90, offering easy on and off access for travelers.
While the campground focuses on these core amenities, it's important to note the absence of a traditional camp store or a consistently present camp host, which some reviewers mentioned as a wish for improvement. This means campers need to be self-prepared for items like firewood and may need to rely on phone or online communication for assistance.
Key Features and Considerations for Local Users:
Dakota Sunsets Campground offers several key features that make it a viable option for local users and travelers:
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: The distance from the interstate ensures a tranquil camping experience, ideal for relaxation.
- Clean and Well-Maintained Facilities: The emphasis on cleanliness across the grounds and in the restrooms provides a comfortable and hygienic stay.
- Full Hookups for RVs: The availability of water, electric, and sewer hookups caters well to RV travelers.
- Laundry Facilities for Extended Stays: The on-site laundry is a significant convenience for longer trips or those who prefer to travel light.
- Playground for Families: The playground makes it a suitable option for families with young children.
- Easy Access to I-90: Its proximity to the interstate makes it a convenient stopover for those traveling through the region.
- Proximity to Basic Amenities in Salem: The nearby town of Salem offers essential services for campers.
Local users considering Dakota Sunsets Campground should be aware of the self-check-in process and the limited on-site services beyond the essentials. However, the cleanliness and quiet environment might outweigh these considerations for many, especially those who are self-sufficient in their camping preparations.

Dakota Sunsets Campground Reviews
Great place to stay and practically had the place to ourselves. Self-check in easy. We stayed 3 nights and had good site, water, electric, and sewer. Park is very well maintained and quiet since it is a mile off I-90. Level gravel site and hard pack gravel roads.
Apr 27, 2025 · Britton MinthorneWell it's clean but no camp store no place to get fire wood or anything no real camp host present nobody to greet you when you come in it's all done online clean bathrooms though nice sized laundry facilities Level rv spacesThey have a playground our site had no fire ring and picnic table on wrong side but whatever too windy to have a camp fire anyway it's not a bad place just wish they had a camp host and a camp store it's close to highway about 1.5 miles from 90So easy on easy off and the little town of Salem there's not much there but there is a dollar general and a sports bar and a few fuel stations I came to fix an rv and campThe grounds are very clean here good size bathrooms too that are clean id definitely camp here again but I'd pick a spot further back possibly but wanted to be close to the bath house bet this place gets busy in the regular season I'm old so I guess I'm used to actually booking with a person not online but even for a tech avoider it's super simple to do
May 03, 2025 · Todd HittsAdorable campground! We only stayed for one night but we had the campground all to our selves which was nice.Highly recommend!!
Apr 06, 2025 · Jewelz GarciaVery nice RV park. Only stayed one night. We were greeted by friendly and welcoming staff when checking in and we were given cookies for us and graham crackers for our dogs. That was a nice touch! Fresh baked goods were available to purchase at a reasonable price in the office. We bought dinner rolls and they were excellent. We had a long pull through site and all utilities worked fine. Excellent WiFi and our dogs enjoyed playing off leash in the fenced dog park.
Jul 15, 2024 · T SmithConveniently located about a mile and a half off the freeway it was early in the season and temp got down to about 36*. On entering they told us they had a broken water main so water, showers, laundry were not available. However they kindly filled up our water tank so it caused no hardship. Very well maintained park and the owners were very pleasant. Highly recommend! Too early for flowers and trees but a imagined a great deal of beauty when summer hits!
