The environment of College Campground is truly captivating, characterized by its prime location on Huntington Lake and its setting amidst dense fir and pine trees. The campground offers a mix of tent-only sites, some nestled in open, meadow-like spaces, while others are tucked away in wooded areas, providing varying degrees of shade and privacy. A significant draw for many campers are the sites that boast direct or partial lake views, offering stunning vistas of Huntington Lake. During the colder months, the lake can freeze over, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland, as noted by a reviewer who found the frozen lake "absolutely stunning" and a "reminder of how beautiful nature can be." While some recent fire damage on the way up and down to the campground might be visible, the campground itself remains a beautiful place to be. The proximity to the Kaiser Wilderness ensures access to a vast network of hiking trails, known for their scenic alpine and meadow views. The area is also known for its wildlife, including bears, so proper food storage is essential.
College Campground is primarily designed for casual camping, making it an excellent recommendation for first-time campers or those who prefer a more structured camping experience rather than off-site, unrestricted options. It features 11 tent-only sites. Each campsite is well-equipped with essential features, including a picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill, facilitating comfortable outdoor cooking and gathering. The sites are generally spacious enough to accommodate a few tents, but for multiple families, reserving two to three sites is advisable. While RV hookups are not available at College Campground, the maximum vehicle length for camping trailers is 30 feet, allowing for smaller RVs or trailers in some sites. Drinking water is piped and available, and both vault and flush toilets are provided, which are generally noted for being clean and well-maintained. Limited cell service in the Huntington Lake Area should be noted, though it can offer a welcome digital detox. The campground is operated by a concessionaire, Vista Recreation, ensuring professional management.
In terms of services, College Campground facilitates a self-sufficient camping experience with its provided amenities. The availability of clean restrooms (both vault and flush toilets) and piped drinking water significantly enhances comfort. The nearby Huntington Lake offers a wide array of recreational activities. A marina and boat launch are conveniently located nearby, and visitors even have the option of mooring their boats close to some of the campsites, making it ideal for boating enthusiasts. Huntington Lake is popular for swimming, sailing, motorized boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and water skiing. Many hiking trails are accessible from the campground, including Rancheria Falls, Indian Pools, and Black Point. The 12-mile Kaiser Loop Trail provides further access to the Kaiser Wilderness. Interpretive programs throughout the summer are often sponsored by California Land Management at various locations in the Huntington Lake area, with schedules typically posted at campgrounds, offering educational opportunities for visitors. The Billy Creek Guard Station museum, also nearby, provides historical insights into Huntington Lake, Native Americans, and the Forest Service.
Promotional information for College Campground highlights its tranquil atmosphere, its suitability for families, and its excellent access to both the lake and wilderness areas. The campground is praised for being "not too busy, quiet, and a nice place to get away." Its appeal extends to those who appreciate winter scenery, as the frozen lake during snowy periods creates a unique camping backdrop. The focus is on providing a clean and welcoming environment that encourages connection with nature and outdoor recreation. The fees are set at $44.00 per night for a single site and $87.00 for a double site, with an additional $10 per night for extra vehicles. Holiday fees increase by $2 per site. The campground has specific restrictions, including a maximum stay of 14 days and a maximum group size of 6 per site. Reservations are recommended and can be made at least 3 days in advance, with minimum stays of 2 nights on weekends and 3 nights on holidays. The operating season is typically from Memorial Day weekend through September, although specific dates are weather-dependent. The "light" usage suggests it might be less crowded than some other popular campgrounds, enhancing its peaceful appeal.

College Campground Reviews
I came here with the family about two weeks ago and from my experience it was absolutely stunning. Not to busy, quiet, and a nice place to get away. I love the snow and seeing the lake frozen over was a reminder of how beautiful nature can be. Only downside was seeing all the damage from last year's fire on the way up and down. Overall a great place to be!
Mar 23, 2022 · Brad Hodges IIVery nice place for casual camping. I'd recommend for first time campers who aren't ready for the offsite, unrestricted type of camping. Clean restrooms and near the lake. Big enough for a few tents a site, but if you plan to go with multiple families, probably need to reserve 2 to 3 sites.
Jul 24, 2022 · Zhong YangVery clean and tidy camp right next to an absolutely beautiful lake. The water was a bit cold, but not at all freezing; perfect temperature to swim in the morning. I would love to come back here with a sailboat or a kayak to enjoy the lake a bit more. The restrooms were one of the cleanest of any public restroom I have ever visited, which was a huge bonus. The only reason I gave only 4 stars is because there was one quite loud group near us we had to deal with, as the campsites are very close to each other.
