The environment surrounding Colonial Creek North Campground is a major draw for visitors. Situated along the shores of Diablo Lake, the campground boasts stunning views of the lake's unique turquoise waters, framed by towering, forested mountains. The North Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway itself is renowned for its spectacular vistas, and the campground provides a perfect base for exploring this iconic route. Campers can expect to be immersed in a landscape of natural beauty, with opportunities for wildlife viewing and enjoying the fresh mountain air.
Based on recent customer reviews, Colonial Creek North Campground offers several appealing services and features. The campsites are described as spacious, providing a sense of privacy between neighbors, which is a significant advantage for those seeking a more secluded experience. While hookups are not mentioned, suggesting a more traditional camping setup, the availability of clean restrooms is a noted positive aspect, contributing to a comfortable stay.
A key feature of Colonial Creek North Campground is its direct access to Diablo Lake. Campsites located near the water offer the incredible convenience of launching kayaks and enjoying the lake's pristine environment. The lake's calm, glass-like surface during favorable weather conditions is ideal for paddling and enjoying the scenery from a different perspective. However, it's worth noting that wind can pick up during the day, creating choppier waters.
For those planning to bring food, the presence of bear boxes at the campsites is a crucial feature, emphasizing the need for responsible food storage in bear country. This ensures the safety of both campers and wildlife. The campground's location also provides easy access to hiking trails in the area, catering to outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. Additionally, its proximity to the North Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway allows for convenient day trips to nearby attractions, such as the charming town of Winthrop, offering a blend of natural exploration and local culture.
It's important for prospective campers to be aware of certain conditions at Colonial Creek North Campground. Cell service is generally unavailable, providing an opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse in the natural surroundings. However, this lack of connectivity should be considered for safety and communication planning. Showers are not available at the campground, which is typical for many national park campgrounds, and campers should plan accordingly.
Another factor to consider is the proximity of the main road (North Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway) to the campground. While the noise from passing cars and trucks may be noticeable during the day, reviewers indicate that the area becomes fairly quiet at night, allowing for peaceful sleep.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the high demand for campsites, as indicated by the need to book six months in advance for a summer stay, suggests the campground's popularity among local users searching for "camping near me." The stunning location, spacious campsites, and lake access are likely the primary drivers of this demand. The fact that one reviewer, despite a fire ban due to nearby wildfires, still found the experience incredible speaks volumes about the campground's inherent appeal.
The fire ban mentioned in both reviews is an important point for potential campers to note. Fire restrictions can be in place, especially during drier summer months, due to wildfire risks in the region. Campers should be prepared for the possibility of no campfires being allowed and plan for alternative cooking methods and evening ambiance.
For local users specifically looking for "camping near me" that combines stunning natural beauty with opportunities for lake activities and hiking, Colonial Creek North Campground is a highly recommended option. The need for advance booking, particularly for popular summer dates and waterfront campsites, underscores its desirability. The spaciousness of the campsites and the friendly atmosphere reported by visitors further enhance its appeal.
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping experience at Colonial Creek North Campground, local users should:
- Contact the campground at (360) 854-7200 or +1 360-854-7200 to inquire about availability, reservation procedures, and any current alerts or restrictions (such as fire bans).
- Plan well in advance, especially for stays during peak season or weekends, as reservations are highly recommended and often necessary.
- Be prepared for the lack of cell service and plan accordingly for communication and navigation.
- Note the absence of showers and pack appropriately for personal hygiene.
- Utilize the provided bear boxes for all food storage to ensure safety.
- Bring appropriate gear for lake activities like kayaking and swimming, as well as for hiking.
- Be mindful of the noise from the nearby scenic byway during the day and appreciate the quieter nights.
In conclusion, Colonial Creek North Campground offers a remarkable camping experience for local users searching for "camping near me" within the majestic North Cascades. Its stunning location on Diablo Lake, spacious campsites, access to water activities and hiking, and the overall beauty of the surroundings make it a sought-after destination. Early booking is strongly advised to secure a spot at this popular and picturesque campground.

Colonial Creek North Campground Reviews
We were somehow lucky enough to lock in 2 nights at the end of August 2024. The campsites were exactly what we were looking for. These are very spacious spots that are far enough away from neighbors that it feels private. The downside is that there were no campfires allowed. Everything was damp, and the weather was chilly. It didn't make much sense to now allow campfires. I understand it was due to the fires in the nearby area, but literally everything was soaking wet at our campsite. When the weather was calm, the lake was as smooth as glass. Once the rain storm was heading in, the water was choppy (shown in photos).
Sep 13, 2024 · Kristen MillerI had to book this 6 months in advance as soon as it became available online, which is always a challenge when camping in WA state. We stayed in camp site #5 right next to the water. This campground is incredible and we got so lucky to be by the water with easy access for our 2 kayaks. We were careful to use the bear boxes for our food. The campsites near the water are very close to each other, but it wasn't an issue and our neighbors were all very friendly. There was a fire ban at the end of July when we were there. You can expect no cell service, some wind during the day on the lake, no showers, and clean restrooms. Do note that the main road is right near by and you can hear cars and trucks going by during the day. At night it is fairly quiet though. We absolutely loved how stunning it is here and how we had access to hiking and a day trip to Winthrop!
Aug 26, 2023 · Sonja MirandaWas a nice and quiet campsite even though near the road. No cell service, no electric. No showers, no hot watee. They have flush tolits. no paper towels or hand dryer in the bathroom so bring a towel! There's a creek and a lake nearby. Size and privacy of campsites were good.
Aug 10, 2024 · AmandaColonial Creek is a great campground! The campground is divided between north and south. The south side is more popular and has water front camping. Expect it to be louder and busier. The north side is more secluded in the woods and has much less traffic. You'll be able to access restrooms and the Thunder Knob Trail much easier. In any case, it's a great campground.
Sep 20, 2021 · Michael BartonThis is a very popular campsite in the North Cascades. The campground is divided into north and south sides, where the north side is much smaller in terms of the number of places. The advantage of this campground is its close proximity to the beach of Lake Diablo. We stopped near the Thunder Creek trail, which is located not far from the lake.
