The environment surrounding Colonial Creek South Campground is characterized by its stunning location within the North Cascades National Park complex. Its proximity to Diablo Lake is a major draw, offering campers opportunities for various water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and simply enjoying the picturesque lake shores. The Diablo Lake trailhead is conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from the campground, providing access to trails with excellent views of the lake and the impressive Diablo Dam. The area is renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery, lush forests, and vibrant turquoise waters of the glacial-fed lakes. Colonial Creek South Campground itself is described as "pretty nice," suggesting a well-maintained and pleasant setting amidst this natural grandeur. The presence of "plenty of spots" indicates a relatively large campground, increasing the chances of finding a suitable site, especially with reservations. The varying sizes of campsites cater to different needs, from solo campers with small tents to those with larger setups accommodating multiple tents. Each campsite is equipped with a dining table and a fire pit, although it's important to note that campfires are no longer allowed, likely due to fire risk management within the national park.
In terms of services and features, Colonial Creek South Campground stands out for its surprisingly modern restroom facilities. One reviewer enthusiastically described them as "top notch," featuring running water and flushing toilets, which are often considered a luxury in more rustic campgrounds. This amenity significantly enhances the comfort and convenience of the camping experience. While campfires are prohibited, the presence of a fire pit at each site might still allow for the use of portable camp stoves for cooking. The provision of a dining table at each spot adds to the functionality and comfort of the campsites. A critical feature highlighted in the reviews is the emphasis on bear safety. Campers are strongly advised to keep their food locked up, either in their cars or in the storage containers provided at each site. This is due to the active presence of bears in the area, with a recent incident mentioned where a bear had to be put down, underscoring the importance of adhering to food storage regulations. The helpfulness of the campground staff, including rangers Wendy and Christine and the gentleman who opened the camp, is also noted, suggesting a positive and supportive management presence.
One reviewer shared their experience of securing a campsite without reservations by relying on cancellations and moving between three different sites as they became available. They also mentioned that there were no fees charged for occupying a cancelled site for the night, which could be a potential option for flexible travelers, although it is not a guaranteed strategy. The overall sentiment from the reviews is overwhelmingly positive, with one camper simply stating, "This campsite is amazing!" This enthusiasm, combined with the specific mentions of lake access, hiking, and modern restrooms, paints a picture of a highly desirable "camping near me" destination.

Colonial Creek South Campground Reviews
Pretty nice campground to enjoy water activities on the lake, as well as some nearby hiking. The Diablo Lake trailhead is only 10 minutes driving and has good views of the lake and the dam. The campground has plenty of spots, but they vary significantly on size, some can only accommodate one small tent, while others have room for both a large tent and a small one. All spots have a dining table and fire pit, though fires are no longer allowed. The restroom is top notch, has running water and flushing toilets, magical! All in all, a great campground to relax and enjoy nature.
Jul 26, 2024 · Francesc Vilariño GüellThis campsite is amazing! We had no reservations and were relying on cancellations. We were blessed that weekend. Moved 3 times to different campsites that became available for that day. Rangers Wendy and Christine were awesome as well as the gentleman that opened up the camp for the day. No fees if you grab a cancelled site for the night. Please keep your food locked up either in your car or in storage that is provided at each site. Bears do come by and they recently had to put one down:/
Aug 23, 2022 · AnnaBeautiful camp ground with a gorgeous lake. This place is by far one of my favorite places. The sites are all sorts of sizes so please check in advance with recreation.gov to make sure your site will be what you need. The trails here are very well maintained and so is the beach. The water is very cold, gets deep quickly and has some very strong currents so please wear a life jacket at all times. Kayak and sup users be aware of the wind it picks up quick and tends to blow hard.
Aug 21, 2020 · daniel robinsonlove this location to stop at and take beautiful photos of Diablo and surroundings. camping spots with gorgeous views right on the water. i have yet to camp here, but looks like a great spot if you dont mind camping right next to a lot of people. restrooms, i hear have running water. each spot has lockable bear proof bins for your food
May 09, 2023 · Layne AllysonWe camp here every year and there is always a lot of activity for the whole family. Kids love to swim in Diablo Lake, I usually hike along the river. If we get bored we drive several miles towards the dam and hike together .My recommendation is to book a spot early in the year. This is a very popular campground and I’ve seen people not being able finding a spot without reservation.
