Cottonwood Campground Introduce
For local residents in the Waterloo, Nebraska area considering "camping near me," Cottonwood Campground presents a riverside option with a pleasant view of the Platte River. However, based on recent customer reviews, it's important for potential visitors to be aware of both the positive and negative aspects of this campground to make an informed decision. While it offers a quiet environment and the scenic beauty of the Platte River, some drawbacks have been noted, including potentially awkward site entries, sandy riverfront locations, issues with water access, and ongoing construction reported during the summer of 2023.
The environment of Cottonwood Campground is highlighted by its location along the Platte River. One reviewer specifically mentions a "nice view of the Platte river," indicating that some campsites offer scenic vistas of this significant waterway. The presence of the river suggests potential opportunities for river-related activities, although these are not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews. The natural setting alongside the river could also attract wildlife and provide a generally peaceful outdoor ambiance. Additionally, one reviewer noted "lots of frogs for kids to catch," suggesting a natural environment that may be particularly engaging for families with young children who enjoy observing nature.
One of the reported drawbacks concerning the campsites themselves is the "awkward" nature of the "side pull-in entries," with the exception of the river's edge sites. This could pose a challenge for some RVers or those with trailers, potentially making maneuvering and parking more difficult compared to traditional back-in sites. The reviewer suggests that other nearby campgrounds, such as Oak Grove or Goldenrod, offer "traditional back-in with more privacy and easier access," implying that the site layout at Cottonwood Campground might not be optimal for all types of camping setups.
Furthermore, the river's edge sites, while potentially offering the most direct river views, are described as "VERY sandy." This could be a significant consideration for campers who prefer less sandy environments for setting up their tents or RVs and for general comfort around their campsite. The sandy conditions might also impact the ease of movement and could track into camping gear.
A notable service issue reported by a recent visitor involved the water spigot being "blocked off with a chain." This forced the campers to "decamp and drive over to Day Use Area to refill water tanks," indicating a significant inconvenience. Reliable access to water is a fundamental requirement for most camping trips, and this report suggests a potential issue with the availability or accessibility of water within the campground itself. Potential visitors may want to inquire about the current status of water access before their visit.
Another significant factor to consider, particularly for those planning a trip during the summer of 2023 (and potentially beyond, depending on the duration of the project), is that the campground was reported to be "under construction." The reviewer noted "lots of big piles of sand to navigate bikes around," indicating that the construction activities could impact the usability and enjoyment of the campground. Additionally, the report of "several sites are flooded" suggests potential drainage or water management issues, at least during the time of the review. It would be prudent for prospective campers to inquire about the current status of any construction or flooding concerns and whether they are likely to affect their stay.
Despite these reported drawbacks, Cottonwood Campground does have some positive aspects. The reviewer who detailed the cons also mentioned that it is a "quiet campground" and that the neighbors were "very nice." A quiet atmosphere can be a significant draw for those seeking a peaceful retreat, and friendly fellow campers can enhance the overall experience. The opportunity for children to catch frogs is another potential positive for families with young kids who enjoy nature exploration.
In summary, Cottonwood Campground near Waterloo, NE, offers a pleasant view of the Platte River and a quiet camping environment. However, potential local users should be aware of several reported drawbacks. The side pull-in entries, with the exception of the sandy river's edge sites, may be awkward for some. Access to water from individual sites may be problematic, as indicated by the chained-off spigot. Additionally, the campground was undergoing construction during the summer of 2023, which involved navigating around sand piles, and some sites were reported to be flooded. On the positive side, the campground is quiet, the neighbors were reported to be nice, and there are opportunities for children to observe wildlife like frogs. Local campers considering Cottonwood Campground should weigh these pros and cons carefully and perhaps seek more up-to-date information on the status of construction and water access before making a reservation.

Cottonwood Campground Reviews
Pleasant. Nice view of the Platte river.
Aug 06, 2020 · JOHN MaredaI recommend other campgrounds like Oak Grove or Goldenrod, which have traditional back-in with more privacy and easier access. CONS: The side pull-in entires here are awkward here, unless you want the river's edge sites, which are VERY sandy. The water spigot was blocked off with a chain so we had to decamp and drive over to Day Use Area to refill water tanks. Campground is also under construction in summer 2023 so lots of big piles of sand to navigate bikes around, and several sites are flooded. PROS: quiet campground and very nice neighbors, lots of frogs for kids to catch, nice view of Platte River.
Jul 03, 2023 · Baba FletchThis is a very nice camp ground, the state staff have been very nice. The showers/bathrooms are old but clean.
Oct 07, 2021 · SkyeVery nice campground. Lots of shade, big sites easy to park in parallel paved sites, no need to back in. Clean shower house. 20, 30, 50 amp power. We are planning to go back there. Reservations are only taken 30 days in advanced, an inconvenience when we need 3 sites together and we are coming in from multiple states.
Aug 23, 2020 · Bruce BuckbeeGreat Experience! Will definitely be coming back. We loved our spot 124 and highly advise to pull in the wrong way so your door is on the grass and not the road!
